MOD Brewers Radar

So after getting a little bit of feedback from the original diary post, and other Brewer fans and boards, it appears that the guys highest on the Brewer's radar for that first pick (27th overall) are:

Kendal Volz, RHP, Baylor

Alex Wilson, RHP, Texas A&M

AJ Pollock, CF, Notre Dame

Tyler Skaggs, LHP, Santa Monica HS (CA)

one other possibility is Andrew Oliver, LHP, Oklahoma State

The Brewers have 5 additional picks up to the end of round 3.  After that first round, there is always the possibility of picking up a player who has had an off year and has had their stock fallen.  Ryan Jackson, SS, Miami is a player to be considered for the 39th pick (a sandwich pick as a result of the Yankees signing away CC Sabathia) or High Schooler Jiovanni Mier, SS, La Verne (CA).

For the 2nd round pick (47th overall) a player that stands out, who if available is Third Baseman Matt Davidson, another California High Schooler with very good power.

The Brewers also have the 73rd, 74th and 105th picks in this years draft.  There are players I have seen personally who profile as top 10 round picks such as Buddy Baumann, RHP, Missouri State; or Ben Carlson, 1B, Missouri State.  But there will most likely be better players available for those 3 spots.

Let's keep the debate lively on this subject, there is a lot of decision making to be done before our Mock Draft.  I look forward to everyone's insight and comments.

I still don’t think I would like Jackson in the supplemental round. I have serious concerns about his bat. Will Mier even be available at that point?

I’m hoping that A.J Pollock will be available in the supplemental round, but I’m reading that he is currently rising on draft boards and may not be available. What about Kyle Heckathorn, a huge righty who still has some projection left even though he is a college pitcher?

In the second I think Davidson would be a solid choice. What about Mike Minor, the lefty out of Vanderbilt? I know he was rated highly at the beginning of the year, what has caused him to fall?

In the third round, a couple of outfielders I like are Kentrail Davis out of Tennessee and Matt den Dekker out of Florida. What do other people think?

Skaggs

I know backtocali asked about Skaggs’ scouting report. Here is what BA said about him:

“Skaggs displayed excellent raw stuff in his abbreviated stint, firing an 89-92 mph fastball, 77 mph slurvy breaking ball and 68 mph slow, rainbow curve. To his credit, Skaggs has gradually added velocity to his four-seamer over the past two years.”

Skaggs is 6’ 5", 190, and BA describes him as “exceptionally projectable”.

He is also #20 on Keith Law’s top 100.

Josh Smoker Comparison?

I know that Skaggs is a lot taller than Smoker is/was, but his stuff seems very similar to Smoker’s.

I guess what I am saying is that when it comes to a HS lefty, I like the kid who can throw 94-95 and have the big curve ball as an offset. Guys like Kazmir, Bumgarner, Kershaw, Kiker, etc.

I wonder if Skaggs’ stuff is more suited towards being a pitcher who goes to college, refines his stuff and learns things like command and out pitches. Of course you would rather he learn those things in your minor league system.

I just dont know. He seems right now as just a tall Paul Maholm. I think if they believe he can add mph to his fastball, the risk is well worth it, but unless they think he can throw a consistent 93, 94, 95 to go with that curve ball, I’m not sold, as of yet. At that spot, compared with Skaggs stuff, I like Volz or Wilson first.

what do you see as the ceilings for Wilson and Volz?

by AKinn15 on May 18, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Ceiling

I think they are pretty close. Wilson throws a little harder, but Volz has had the better year this year. Wilson has been shipped to the bullpen to save some stress on his arm this year as well, plus he has an injury history. So Volz is the safer pick, but I think they have about the same ceiling.

Supplemental Round

So it seems like for the Crew’s first round pick we have it narrowed down to Volz or Wilson. What does everyone think about their supplemental pick? Who should we target?

Pollock slip

If AJ Pollock were to slip a few places to that sandwich pick, he would be an excellent choice.

Another player to consider in the later (2nd or 3rd rounds) if available would be Josh Phegley, C, Indiana.

Can you post a link to the Keith Law list? Isnt that list on a pay site for espn?

Law List

The list is on a pay site, but I have access to it so if you ever need a player ranking from his list let me know.

you just have to be an inside member at espn.com. I don’t remember exactly how much it is, I think it is like $40
