Red Sox Picks: #28, #77, #108

Given the Red Sox' track record of taking the best player available, regardless of slot and/or advisor, I'll be taking a similar path.  Considering that the Sox have no compensatory picks, positional need won't play a factor.  Of course, guys who play up the middle or pitch left handed will be given preferential treatment, but if the best player on the board is first basemen, we'll pull the trigger.

Last year the Sox had five of the first 108 picks, this year they have three in the firstHere's how I'll address each pick:

No. 28 -

Players haven't been falling a la Rick Porcello as much the past two years, but if that were to somehow happen, and he were to somehow get past the Yankees, then that would be the ideal choice.  I don't see it happening this year.  At this point, I'm not even sure who I'd target with this choice, as there are a ton of conflicting opinions on everyone from #2 on down.  A college pitcher, or if one of the HS catchers slides a bit, they might be the pick.  Again, I have no idea who'll be available, so this is tough.

No. 77 -

With this pick, ideally I'll go after a HS student with signability issues (think Westmoreland last year).

No. 108 -

Again, best player available.  I'd really like to get this to a second line because I think it looks better that way, and, oh, success!

Final thoughts:

If you want to help, please help.  I've been reading up on the draft for a couple months now, but I'm not going to sit here and say I know exactly what I'm doing.  The more voices, the better.  If you think I should take someone with a certain pick, make a solid case for your player and post it her.  If anyone wants to be an Assistant Scouting Director, by all means, post here.  WAUers will get preferential treatment.

One note

There is no need to worry about anyone falling past the Yanks. New York’s first pick is #29, immediately following the Sox’ first pick.

The Yanks lost picks for all the Type A’s they signed.

OK.

- The Yanks pick at 28*, that’s the compensatory pick for not signing Cole last year. They’re one ahead of the Sox.
- Yes, Byrd could sign before the draft, but I doubt that will be the case. Right now I’m dealing with the picks they have, not the ones they could potentially have.
- I got pick 108 from the SoSH wiki, so I’m not 100% sure on that. I can’t find the official draft order anywhere on MLB.com, which is fairly ridiculous. If anyone else can find it, please, post it here.

I posted the official order above, from BA

The Yanks pick at #29. #29 is the comp for not signing Cole.

Sweet Jesus

From the same BA link:

21. Mariners (compensaton for failure to sign 2008 first-rounder Joshua Fields)
22. Astros (86-75)
23. Twins (88-75)
24. White Sox (89-74)
25. Mets (89-73)
26. Yankees (89-73)
27. Brewers (90-72)
28. Phillies (92-70)
29. Yankees (compensation for failure to sign 2008 first-rounder Gerrit Cole)
30. Red Sox (95-67)

The M’s lost their comp pick when they signed Fields. That moved everyone up one slot. The Yanks to 28, the Sox to 29.

So please, stop. Literally, the last thing I want to do is bicker with you over this minutiae. Minutiae which you’re staggering incorrect about.

WTF are you talking about?

So who drafts first? The Sox as I claimed? Or the Yankees, as you claimed?

What is your problem?

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/draft-basics/2009/267996.html

The Sox draft ahead of the Yankees.

Also,

That pick youre claiming the M’s lose for Fields is the one they received for Ibanez, though I believe it does explain the #107 vs. #108 issue.

seriously alskor

who do you think you are?
Your condescending posts are getting old here…

You’re right, what else needs to be said?

Actually

Seabass’s “Sweet Jesus” post was the first one to get condesending, despite the fact he was wrong. Seems everyone is getting a little too sensitive.

Hey, gfy, read it again

I said “one note, you have the draft slots wrong” and he went off on an insulting rant. When he was very wrong.

I guess that’s what I get for trying to help some of our slower posters.

my bad man

I guess I just assumed it was you starting it from past reads.
My mistake.

Please, Stop.

I was looking at this link when I posted the list. It’s the first link that came up when I googled the draft. The two lists I looked at had the Yanks ahead of the Sox. So, apparently, you’re right. Congratulations.

Apology accepted

Just dont let it happen again.

Oh, and you please, stop.

Signability

Being a internet mock draft I don’t expect too many players to fall due to signability. Also if one does fall that tactic may work for the Redsox as they have the money to throw at the player, but you would be relying upon the team that actually drafts him (probably in a later round) to sign him which could leave you with a wasted pick.

by DeJay on May 15, 2009 6:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

That is the issue here, we lack the power of the purse that the real Sox have. That, and since this is happening before the draft, we won’t know who was actually taken by whom. Still, I’d rather err on the side of talent over signability.

And, alskor, I’d like to be civil. I had some bad info and was a bit snarky, so let’s move on and put together a draft board.

I think the best bet at this point is to come up with a big board for the first pick. Here’s KLaw’s numbers 15-42 on his list. I feel fairly certain that none of the top 15 would fall to us,

15 Matt Davidson 3B Yucaipa HS (Calif.)
16 Wil Myers C/3B Wesleyan Christian Academy (Calif.)
17 Mike Leake RHP Arizona State
18 Max Stassi C Yuba City HS (Calif.)
19 Jiovanni Mier SS Bonita HS (Calif.)
20 Tyler Skaggs LHP Santa Monica HS (Calif.)
21 Chad James LHP Yukon HS (Okla.)
22 Matt Hobgood RHP Norco HS (Calif.)
23 Bobby Borchering 3B Bishop Verot HS (Fla.)
24 Rich Poythress 1B Georgia
25 Jared Mitchell RF LSU
26 Mike Trout CF Millville HS (NJ)
27 Rex Brothers LHP Lipscomb
28 Tommy Joseph C Horizon HS (Ariz.)
29 Billy Bullock RHP Florida
30 Tim Wheeler CF Sacramento State
31 Mychal Givens RHP/SS Plant HS (Fla.)
32 Ben Tootle RHP Jacksonville State
33 Sam Dyson RHP South Carolina
34 Alex Wilson RHP Texas A&M
35 Tony Sanchez C Boston College
36 A.J. Pollock CF/2B Notre Dame
37 Ben Paulsen 1B Clemson
38 Drew Storen RHP Stanford
39 Jake Marisnick OF Riverside Poly HS (Calif.)
40 Madison Younginer RHP Mauldin HS (SC)
41 Kyle Heckathorn RHP Kennesaw State
42 Brooks Raley LHP/OF Texas A&M

I’ve been on a few of these guys for a while (namely Stassi and Mier – doubt they get to us), but I’ve been reading promising things about Mike Trout as well. Tommy Joseph has huge power from what I’ve read, and it looks like he’ll stick behind the plate. I think I have a natural proclivity to go with hitters over pitchers, so if anyone would like to champion some pitchers, please speak up.

by seabass on May 15, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hitters

KLaw is higher on Davidson than others. If he or Borchering could stick at 3B then I’d say go for one of them. Mier projects more as defense first, bat second, and we have guys like that already in our system (Argenis Diaz). I could see going for a guy like Stassi or Myers due to their catching ability. I don’t think Tate will fall in this Mock.

As for pitchers, I’m liking Chad James the more I hear about him. He’s be an excellent pick. No matter whether we go hitter or pitcher, I see us picking a HSer with our first pick.

With later picks, there are guys like Stephen Perez (SS), David Renfroe (SS/3B), Jake Barrett (RHP), Aaron Miller (OF), Steve Baron ©, Max Walla (OF), and David Nick (SS) that should be available in rounds 2 and 3 instead of going with a pick like Mier or Sanchez in the first round.
