MOD: Braves

The Braves will have just two picks in our mock -- #7 and #87. Likely candidates at #7 include (in no particular order):

Alex White - Aaron Crow - Tanner Scheppers - Zack Wheeler - Mike Leake - Kyle Gibson - Tyler Matzek

Since the Braves are well known for drafting local, I think we can include the free-falling, but still very interesting, Donovan Tate

Wheeler seems like a strong possibility -- he's a local boy with a high ceiling who figures to be there at #7.

The Braves are in a pretty good spot -- after Strasburg and Ackley, there's not much difference between #3 and #7. They'll have their choices of solid options at #7

I'll be looking to take the best player, and ignoring any positional need

Thoughts?

Tate's the wild card here

Last winter, most didn’t expect him to be on the board for the Braves. Now, it seems like taking him would be a stretch. Do you just trust the tools (which he definitely still has), or maybe look at a college pitcher from the South? I think I’d probably go for the pitcher.

I'm leaning pitcher

Would be content with White, Wheeler or Crow.

Kind of have a soft spot for Crow and think he might drop to #7.

why?

why is he falling? i heard he had signed to play at UNC but was being looked at by the yankees, though I don’t know where they pick.

A lot of questions about his skill set.

I’ve seen evaluators putting him in the middle part of the round now. Andy Seller, for example, has him dropping to #14.

Nope.

Don’t pretend to be. But I do know that his stock has fallen. It’s no secret that teams are concerned about his ability to make contact.

Wheeler

I think Wheeler is the pick here at 7. He won’t cost over-slot signing, and he is projectable. He has solid pitcher and a high upside. I think he’ll be the pick here. He has a lot of helium.

Anyone but Tate

I dont see why the braves would take a risk on Tate when they already have Schafer/Gorkys/Heyward. A lot of Tate’s value would come from playing CF and the braves already have a young one in the majors and another at AA.

Irrelevant

You take the best talent at this point, position doesn’t matter. Besides, he’ll be at least 4 years away, which is plenty of time to sort that stuff out.

#87

With #87, I wouldn’t be surprised if they went over slot and grabbed a good talent. Pick #7 should be at or around slot. With no supplemental or 2nd round pick we should be able to spend a little more. Hopefully on an inflielder sliding due to bonus demands or sliding due to performance as of late.

College Pitchers

I think it would be pretty out of character for the Braves to take a college starter with their first pick. They haven’t done that since Derek Lilliquist in 1987. And they have only taken three in the first two rounds (including supp.) since then: Brian Boltz (89 – 2nd), Dan Meyer (02 – 1s), and Dustin Evans (06 – 2nd). Of course, taking Devine a couple years ago was very out of character, so who knows.

I’m thinking Roy Clark is probably giddy at the thought of finally getting an elite prep arm.

I think it is

less about the college/HS breakdown for the Braves and more about the fact that you can, often, get a more “live” HS arm where the Braves usually draft (late first round) than you can a college one.

Alex White’s appeal isn’t that he is a “polished college pitcher”. His appeal is that he has a tremendous arm.. period. I think that will appeal to the Braves regardless of his HS/college grouping

actually White...

has shown that great of an arm or stuff this year..i think every has been pretty disappointed. i saw him live and his stuff just isnt THAT great

Deputy

Also, I need a deputy scouting director — anyone interested?

Any suggestions at #87?

Anyone know any Georgia talents who might be under the radar?

by nivarsity on May 21, 2009 10:48 AM EDT reply actions

Miles Head

Catcher for Whitewater HS in Fayetteville. Though he’s not exactly under the radar if a fellow scouting director knows of him…

David Renfroe at 87

It’s unclear just where Renfroe’s future lies on a baseball field. He plays shortstop and pitches in high school, and some may see him as a pitcher at the next level. Others might see him slide over to third defensively, and one scout said that with his agility and arm strength, he could see him behind the plate, a la Russell Martin. He’s got good tools across the board offensively and his bat will play anywhere. He’s a great athlete who quarterbacked one of the top high school football teams in the country, so watching him at the next level could be a lot of fun.
