MOD Dodgers

The Dodgers selections:

#36

#56

#65

#96

Without a first rounder, I'll mainly be waiting to see if anyone falls. While signability is generally a concern for the Dodgers, I'll take whoever I feel is the BPA regardless of the price tag. Also, while the Dodgers and I usually veer more towards prep players, I'm not against taking college kids with any of the picks.

Please post any thoughts/input/questions below.

Hobgood/Heathcott/Pounders?Seager

I would go with Matt Hobgood at 36, he seems to have the attributes Logan White looks for in his fastball and strong breaking ball, but minus the projectability.

I think Slade Heathcott’s a pretty good pick at 56 or 65. 5-tool talent with plus hitting ability, ability to play 3 outfield positions, hit 95 off the mound, and power to all fields. Downside is his off the field character issues and ACL surgery, but still runs very well. Similar to Lambo’s case. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2009/reports.jsp?content=heathcott

I would flip Brooks Pounder at 56 or 65 with Heathcott, more of a pitchability guy right now but maybe he might develop more velocity in the future.

At 96 if he’s still available, Chris Dominguez.or Kyle Seager if not. Both are college third baseman.

Re

I’ve been on Hobgood for a while now. Not sure if he’ll last to #36 but if he does he’d be near the top of my list.

Also high on Heathcott as a CF. Pounders is interesting and I’m not sure how long he’ll be on the board in the second.

Not that high on Dominguez or Seager, but I’ll give them both a look.

Thanks for the input.

Re

Just curious, which players are you high on for those 4 picks?

Re

At 36, I’m hoping someone drops. I like Hobgood, Chad James, Tommy Joseph.

For 56 and 65 I like Heathcott, Boxberger, Keyvius Sampson, Scott Griggs.

Not a ton of guys on my radar for 96. Michael Heller looks like a possibility. Maybe Luke Bailey.

Boxberger

College pitcher, reminds me of Billingsley with his movement and stuff. Could be had at 36, but might be a bit high for a college pitcher.

Players for #96

What do you think of these players for the pick at 96- Max Walla, Bryan Morgado, and Daniel Tuttle?

Walla is an OF that could really hit and has projectable power but he’s kinda small at 5’11’ and doesn’t play in a baseball hotbed so he’ll probably slip.

Morgado is a LHP from the U of Tennessee, but unlike James Atkins he has a mid 90’s fastball and a hard slider. I can see him going the Lindblom route and starting if his delivery is cleaned up and develops a change. At worst, he becomes a hard throwing reliever.

Tuttle is the projectable high school RHP the Dodgers seem to favor.

Walla looks like he can hit and hit for power despite his size. He’d definitely be an interesting guy to watch, though I’m not sure where he’s projected to go.

Morgado was a guy I noticed and kept in mind when I first saw him pitch because his arm action reminds me of Michael Watt’s. He’s a guy I think the Dodgers would look at but I’m not sure I’d spend that high of a pick on him since he couldn’t stick in Tennessee’s rotation due to his control issues.

Tuttle looks projectable but he looks like he needs some work on his delivery. The arm strength is definitely there and he can spin a nice slider, but I’m concerned about his mechanics.

A guy I just noticed this past weekend is Richie Shaffer. Jon Mayo’s scouting report on MLB.com is glowing and I found some video of him; he reminds me a little of Josh Vitters. Not sure how he’s done this spring but I love his swing and his projectable build.
