MOD Brewers
Hi everyone, glad to be the mock SD for the Brewers for this year's mock draft.
So lets open it up for discussion...
In the past the Brewers have gone for a big bat, or a projectable arm with lots of upside. Many times over the past 5 years the Brewers have taken a player in the first round a lot sooner than would have been expected. Now that Jack Z has left to run the Mariners it will be interesting to see what happens.
If the draft were held today I would be leaning toward Kendal Volz, RHP, Baylor or Ryan Jackson, SS, MIami for the Brewers in the first round.
Bring it on.

Is Jackson even going to go in the 1st round? Hasn’t he really fallen?

Probably more of a Sandwich pick
The defense is still there, its his bat that is in question, but that has always been the case.
He is just a guy I was high on before the year began when a lot of the prospect rankings came out.

I really don’t want to see Jackson to the Brewers in the first round. The history of good field, bad hit shortstops picked in the first round is not good. I really hope that Skaggs somehow falls to the Brewers. I think he would be a really good pick with their first rounder. I also like Volz at that spot too. At worst, he will be a set up/closer for the Crew

Do you think that Volz is better suited for the bullpen? I think if he gets some seasoning in the minor leagues, he projects as more of a #3 possibly #2 starter at the major league level.
I dont know if his fastball is up there enough to be a late inning reliever or closer. But he is definitely a guy I would like to take with that pick.
Rumor is that Seid has been scouting the Big 12 a lot this spring, so I would be willing to bet he is trying to decide between Volz and Alex Wilson of Texas A&M. Now Wilson is a guy I could see at the back of the bullpen.

I’m not necessarily saying that Volz is better suited for the bullpen…I’m just saying that I think that is the worst case scenario for him. I agree with you that he could be a #3 or even a #2. What is Volz’s velocity? I thought I read a report that he was 93-95, but maybe I’m not remembering correctly

Plus Slider
Yeah Volz brings it to the tune of about 95mph but he has a plus slider and it might be a waste to throw a guy like him, with the endurance he has to the bullpen. Command issues definitely have to be worked on as does a change up, but I feel his potential is more aligned as a front, to mid line starter.

I would definitely be ok with Volz as the pick…and they should definitely try him out as a starter. I think the change up will come with more experience, usually guys that throw that hard in college and have two solid pitches don’t really need a third, so it should just be a matter of time until the change up is developed

I completely agree
The nasty change up is definitely an art, and not a ton of guys have it. But a serviceable one can definitely be taught.

Brewer Picks
The Brewers have the 26th, 39th, 47th, 73rd and I believe 75th picks in this years draft up to the 3rd round. If this is incorrect someone please let me know.

Alex Wilson, RHP, Texas A&M
Flame throwing starting pitcher is rumored to be a target of the Brewers in this years draft. Bruce Seid, the new Brewer SD has been scoutng the Big 12 a lot, and given the pick the Brewers have, as well as who might or is likely to be available, Wilson is has to be one of their targets.
Wilson is a flame throwing RightHander who tops out at 98 mph and sits in the 92-93 mph range. So far this year he has struck out 105 batters in only 74 IP, and has only walked 18 all year as well. He has a respectable .230 batting average against, but does have 14 Wild Pitches. He also has a plus slider, though not as good perhaps as that of fellow Big 12er Kyle Gibson.
There is some thought to him being a back of the bullpen/closer type of pitcher given his velocity, good slider and lack of a 3rd pitch. But if the Brewers (or anyone takes him) and can teach a 3rd pitch, he instantly becomes a top of the rotation starter given his plus command and plus velocity.
He does have an injury history as this is his first year out recovering from Tommy John surgery.

How does everyone feel about Skaggs if he were to be available? I don’t know a whole lot about him, other than he is a projectable lefty with good stuff, and Keith Law has him ranked #20 I think. I haven’t heard too much about him in the middle of the first, though. What do you guys think?

He is definitely a guy worth looking into for the Brewers if he falls to that 27th spot. I have not heard too much about his stuff either, but scouts do love his frame and have big dreams about his projectibility. He is definitely the probably the best option for the Brewers among HS LHP. I would definitely like to hear about his stuff to think about him. He would need to have a 92+ mph fastball to even be considered in my book.
