Is Jason Bartlett MLB's 3rd Best SS?
Only Christian Guzman in 90 ABs and Omar Vizquel with 35 ABs possess a higher batting average at the position than Jason Bartlett.
and that average is: .351
Ok sooo so what?
well, its not just the Batting Average, in 114 ABs totaling 40 hits Bartlett has hit 4 homers and 6 doubles swiping 7 bags and playing average to above average defense for the Tampa Bay Rays
He is exceptionally quick and an underrated baserunner who should steal 30-40 bases.
to me, by the end of the season Jason Bartlett can only say Hanley Ramirez and Jose Reyes are all-around better Short-stops in the game today than he is.
Ryan Theriot - may be right there with Bartlett and is a Great Player. he too could say he is one of the games great Short-Stops by seasons end.
Jimmy Rollins fresh off a World Series Title may be in a little bit of a funk and should come out of it. But, he is on the wrong side of 30.
Derek Jeter is still Derek Jeter but he is 35 years old.
JJ. Hardy seems to always be a slow starter but doesn't have the raw speed.
Rafael Furcal is great and will come through for the Dodgers, but is currently batting in the .240s and he too is on the wrong side of 30....
Stephen Drew (DL) hasn't really impressed me to date, although he was hot an the end of last season. Mike Aviles, Jhonny Perlata and Alexi Ramirez of the Royals, Indians and White Sox have been awfuly poor over the first month plus....I think I am underestimating some guys out there maybe Yunel Escobar of the Braves, maybe Scutaro of the Blue Jays, or Tulo with the Rox.
But to me Jason Bartlett is a top 5 SS in all of the game today.
Who is most likely to exceed the skill set and value of Jason Bartlett by the end of their career?
Elvis Andrus (Rangers), Alcides Escobar (Brewers) or Eric Aybar (Angels)
I'd like to see a Jason Bartlett Prospect Retro in the future.....

Time To Have Fun Disproving This
BABIP = .391 = UNSUSTAINABLE.
LD% = 29.2% = UNSUSTAINABLE.
HR/FB = 11.1% = 8% ABOVE CAREER AVERAGE = UNSUSTAINABLE.
That basically corrects the average and power, making him the same player as usual.
A noob or n00b is someone that lacks intellegance or common sense, most people think that noob is a word used only in the online gaming world, but in reality it is becoming an ever popular word with teenage society.
a noob could be simply a level 100 running round shouting ‘’WTF DO I GO!?’’ or someone calling someone else a noob and then getting hit with a brick, anyone can call anyone a noob, but normally they are noobs themselves

Pretty tough to judge a guy based on 1 month of play…better looking to his career averages where you’ll see he’s not in the same class as the top SS of the game.

well, show me the Games Elite Short-stops right now
Besides Han-Ram, and Jose Reyes
IMO there aren’t any.
I think the 29 % line-drive sustainable for Bartlett is sustainable

Especially
For a guy that’s not showed something even close to that in the past.

Drew, Tulo, Guzman
All I’d take over him. Also Peralta and Hardy I could say over him too.

I think the 29 % line-drive sustainable for Bartlett is sustainable
’
The league leader in 2008 was Andre Ethier. His LD rate was 26.6%. In 2007 it was Michael Young with a 27.2%.
Its not sustainable.

I meant to say almost sustainable.

Also I still to date am not a Fan of the Delmon Young Trade
And I am A Twins Fan
(Hated it then, still hate it now)
I dislike that trade more and more all the Time from the Twins perspective.

you make strange capitalization decisions
Also, yes. Jason Bartlett is indeed the 3rd best SS in baseball behind only Guzman and Vizquel.

Is there a Twins fan anywhere that still backs that trade? The Twins gave up a front-of-the-rotation starter and a Gold Glove-caliber shortstop who is presently hitting for a .356 average. What they got in return is in essence a young Jeff Leonard. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Hac Man. But when you consider that he was involved in three trades throughout his career, and the biggest name involved in any of them was Mike Ivie, it makes the Young deal look like a colossal jack on the part of Tampa Bay.
by StickRat on May 13, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Beleive it or Not.....
Not that i EVER backed it, but there are some fans that think the Trade could still turn out in the Twins favor long term, I’m not one of them, although I suppose it is possible….
Brendan Harris is starting to come on strong for the Twins and Jason Pridie looks like a solid 5th outfielder (which the Twins don’t need, at all though)
and Delmon Young could still develop into #’s similar to what his brother Dimitri Young put up, Only Young should be able to hit a few more Home-Runs
Meanwhile for the Rays, Bartlett is one of the games best short-stops and Matt Garza(who I still CAN"T believe the Twins Dealt -sheeeesh) looks like a future Ace, but the 3rd piece they got RP Eduardo Morlan isn’t even in their system anymore – I believe he is in AAA for the Milwaukee Brewers and looks like a future long reliever at best.

I'll go with yes.
But I’ll admit that I’m only saying yes so that I can be absolutely certain as to the single dumbest thing I’ll say all week long.

Scutaro?
How do you figure he has been better?
by nyy601 on May 12, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Scutaro vs. Bartlett
Bartlett’s currently got 20 points on Scutaro in terms of wOBA, but that’s highly deceiving based on their respective BABIPs (Bartlett is at an unsustainable .391 while Scutaro’s is a quite normal .294). Even with the BABIP discrepency Scutaro has a higher OBP, and that will continue to be the case considering his walk rate is 18% and Bartlett’s is 5%.
Bartlett is edging Scutaro slightly in UZR/150, but considering the inevitable BABIP correction that’s coming for Bartlett, and that Scutaro vastly outperformed Bartlett in UZR/150 last season, Scutaro almost certainly will be the superior overall player this season.

Age
I don’t see how seasonal age should effect a player like Jimmy Rollins or Rafael Furcal. Perhaps this becomes an issue as you come to Jeter’s age, but a player at 30-31 is often considered to either be in his prime or just passing it by (depending on the player and his athleticism/body type.)
Off the top of my head, I would take the following players over Jason Bartlett (no particular order): Jose Reyes, Jimmy Rollins, Hanley Ramirez, Orlando Cabrera, Rafael Furcal, Jack Wilson, Jhonny Peralta, JJ Hardy, Stephen Drew, Yunel Escobar, and maybe Miguel Tejada and Khalil Greene.
by GuyinNY on May 12, 2009 9:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yep
Khalil looks like he’s cooked, but I think Asdrubal Cabrera should be considered in a conversation of shortstops as well, and I’d take him over Bartlett. I’d probably take Cristian Guzman, as well. Jason Bartlett is more Elvis Andrus than he is Hanley Ramirez, or even Jhonny Peralta for that matter.

Short Answer: No
Longer Answer: No he is not.
He has plus contact skills, plus speed, not much else. I don’t think his power is for real, his average will go down due to high BABIP, I’ll give him top-8ish area by end of year.

Bobby Scales Tues Night
Homered in his only at bat and is batting over .400 and slugging over .700.
I agree that bartlett is playing well. Also that he won’t maintain this pace.
Consider Jack Wilson’s 2004 season at 26, when he went .332/.354/.501 over the first half. Or his 2007 season, when he, like bartlett now, was 29, and went .356/405/.557 post all-star. Now look at his career numbers.
And Jack Wilson strikes out less than bartlett 9although he also walks very infrequently; bartlett isn’t a walk machine).
Bartlett steals more bases. But his zone rating at short is, what, about 4.5? jack Wilson is 5.
I am not arguing Wilson is better at this stage, just saying you have to consider more than just bartlett’s current gaudy numbers.
Bartlett is also going to be “on the wrong side of 30” (per your argument, 5 months from now. he turns 30 in October. And his speed will likely somewhat diminish.
Compare him to Stephen Drew.
Bartlett’s career line is .282/.341/.373. Drew’s is .271/.327/.450. Minor league numbers: Bartlett .297/.371/.415, Drew .315/.385/.546. Major power difference, and Drew is more than 3 years younger.
Now, Drew has less range, and as he spiked in power some last year, his range decreased. And bartlett has more speed, sbs. maybe Drew will move off short in a few years. And maybe he’ll stagnate and bartlett will continue to show improvement (not in the unsustainably high ld rate and babip). But I’d take Drew over Bartlett.
Even Ben Zobrist is about as good as Bartlett.

To be completely Honest
When Jason Bartlett was a Twins I LOVED him in 2006 for obvious reasons – he was exceptional
but in 2007he was almost dreadful both at the dish and on the diamond defensively
I thought he was a one hit wonder (really I did) Despite the Awesome minor league #’s he put up.
He can Flat out hit period.

Question:
who in you’re mind wobatus has a better chance of seeing big league action this year
(not counting a Sept. call-up)
Jason Donald – Phillies
Gordon Beckham – Chi Sox
Alcides Escobar – Brewers
?
by SteveHoffmanSlowey on May 14, 2009 8:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
tough one
I would think it would depend on injuries, who is in the race, etc.
Donald is the oldest, but not tearing it up in Lehigh Valley. Where is the need for him in the show before September?
Escobar, also not hitting up a storm in AAA. Good defense. They have Gamel now to be lefty off bench, spell Hall against righties. Would they need him for d replacement later on?
Beckham is playing well in AA. He isn’t super young, so I wouldn’t say it is rushing him, despite not much pro ball. If the Chisox are in contention in July and Getz is sucking it up, I could see it being Beckham as first of these guys. Certainly the first of them with significant playing time who would have a chance to be any good right away, at least fantasy wise (Escobar could get a call to be ss with hardy at 3rd?-but then what to do with gamel?). Maybe one of the starters on these teams gets dealt, in which case falling OUT of contention might help. Brewers are doing well even sans CC. Would they deal hardy if they fell out?
Hafta admit I am not up enough on some of the contracts and teams involved.

Thanks Wobatus
Jason Donald sure gets a lot of Love from people like Klaw and Fantasy baseball experts…

hehe, wow
Bartlett Update May 17th
3-4, 3B, 2B and a single (almost the cycle) ALSO Bartlett stole a base wow Why Am I not surprised, to make things interesting how long will he be batting in the 6th spot?
-can’t be too much longer….
