Vance Worley

Anyone have any idea what the prospect status is on this guy? he has been pitching great and is pretty young for AA.

Does he have a legit shot to be a solid SP in the Majors? Any help would be great.

by Summa Slugga on May 11, 2009 12:30 PM EDT reply actions

He's a back end starter.

A #4/5 guy, though it’s possible he’s improved greatly this year. He was just drafted last year, so there’s still plenty of hope. He’s from Long Beach State.

by Andy Seiler on May 11, 2009 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Kris didn't have his best stuff today...

But still managed to go 6.2 innings only giving up 2 hits and whiffing six… He’s working on a streak of 20.2 scoreless innings, and has the ERA down to 0.96…

wow

this guy is really dominating huh…what is his ceiling?

by miraclemets on May 11, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Tough to really say…

Realistically, it’s probably an average #2, or a really good #3 type starter… And his floor would be a solid late inning reliever. He’s been a starter for less than a year and even during that time it’s been back and forth some, because in ST they were seriously looking at him making the team to start the year out of the bullpen.

He only has like 23 starts in his career, and he was a shortstop as an amateur. He’s really just a great athlete, I know he got used to pinch-hit and pinch run a lot last year, and hit a home run and even stole home as a pinch-runner.

I can’t really tell you what the Braves long-term plans are for him; because I don’t think they really have a good idea as to what it is they’re doing with him. As long as he’s pitching like this as a starter though, how can you not want that guy on your team? I don’t care if he’s 4’8".

Fouled a ball off his hand today..on the local broadcast of the game it said he is going to DC to have surgery and will be out awhile

by NYSOX on May 11, 2009 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

I'm guessing his hand was hit by the pitch.

And he was checking his swing. Since you can’t hit the ball and foul it off your hand. Right? Still a strike.

Hopefully this doesn’t hurt his ASG chances… I know I’m voting for him at least 25 times.

I-Cubs beat Memphis 6-2

Reinhard – 4 shutout, 3 K’s, 1 BB. Due to some shuffling of guys, Reinhard got the start. He’s had an excellent year so far, 0.40 ERA, 22.1 IP, 15 H, 6 BB, 1 R (solo shot), and 29 K’s. Future is probably more of a middle relief type, fringe setup possibility, IMO, based on his stuff. Cubs got him in the Jae-Kuk Ryu trade with Tampa.

Nothing else real noticeable on the Cubs side of the ledger. Brad Snyder did go 2/4 with a double and a homer, kicking his line to .318/.351/.636, but the 30/5 K/BB screams out that he hasn’t improved much, other than being in the PCL now. Jake Fox and Jason Dubois both went 1/3, with Fox getting a triple, 2 RBI’s, 1R. Season line for Fox is at .389/.464/.884.

D-Cubs and Smokies

D-Cubs lost to Tampa 8-3 in a shortened 6. Nothing much to note – team has been struggling offensively of late, although sweet swinging Ryan Keedy is up there now (went 1/3). A personal favorite, Jovan Rosa, has been struggling a bit. Had an injury, but I think it’s just swing issues he’s working through. Went 1/3.

Smokies lost 4-3 to West Tennessee in 13. Russ Canzler went 3/4 with 2 RBI and a BB, but he’s a fringe prospect at best. Marquez Smith went 3/6 with a double/2 Runs. Another fringe guy, although a bit more versatile than Canzler, which should help. Tony Thomas went 1/4, but it was good to see 2 walks from him. Darwin Barney went 1/5 with a 2b and a bb, both good signs for him.

Medlen is legit

Solid fastball and change, plus curveball. Who cares if he is small. He is dominating. People need to take notice. I wish the didnt sign Kawakami, it would be great to see Hanson and Medlen both in there.

There’s so many starters at Rome that’s happened a couple times this year.

Between Spruill, Delgado, DeVall, Clemens, Francis, Thompson and Hoover it’s hard to give every starter a start every fifth day.

Just got in

Not sure if it had to do with the game starting at 62 degrees and ending around 54 or maybe just jitters, but Bumgarner’s stuff just didn’t jump out at me. The fastball was nice (sat around 91-92 almost all game and then dropped to 89-90 in the 6th) but his curve only came out maybe three or four times and wasn’t located all that well. He was throwing another pitch (pitches?) that were in the 80-82 range but I could not really tell if it was a slider or a change. Either way, the pitch did not have much movement on it and due to this Bumgarner didn’t really have a pitch that missed bats.
He got tagged on a couple of knee high fastballs, one of which was spanked by Yancarlos Ortiz for a triple. Bumgarner has three liners hit right back to him, including one which he turned into a double play. Really, his saving grace would have to be the anemic offense of New Britain. In general, both teams had weak lineups with maybe one or two solid hitters.
The most noticeable player in the game had to be Brandon Crawford, the SS for Connecticut. Went 3-5 just missing the cycle by a HR. He slapped a nice single in the first and then absolutely slammed his double in the sixth. The ball hit about two feet from the top of the wall in left center. Even though he was showing the opposite field power and contact, New Britain played him as a semi-pull hitter. When he came up in the 8th, he laced one into the left field corner and legged out an easy triple. On defense, he made some solid plays and had one great play where he ranged all the way behind second and threw out the runner with a powerful off balance throw.

Bumgarner

He’s not missing bats but he’s still not getting knocked around at all. I’m interested to see if he holds up as a stud prospect as he moves up if he doesn’t even gain use of a decent second pitch.

by loop on May 11, 2009 11:14 PM EDT reply actions

Not exactly knocked around

He did have a decent amount of groundouts as well as some high popups, but at the same time, there were a few balls that were just drilled. The game should have been a 2-1 final but the ump missed a call at home where the runner tripped over the catcher and missed the plate entirely. I was in the second row behind home plate and you could see the guy miss home by about 2 feet. The ump flinched avoiding a flailing leg and just called him safe.
Then one of the Rock Cat relievers had an easy groundball back to him and attempted to go to second for the double play. He threw it into center and the center fielder proceeded to throw it into the third base dugout scoring two runners. If nothing else, the game was amusing.

Also, according to Seth Stohs, Evan Bigley got called up to Fort Myers which might mean Ben Revere is heading to the DL. It also means that Beloit is going to need another outfielder. Possibly Aaron Hicks.

A further update from Sethspeaks.net

Benson broke his hand and is going on the DL. That’s what caused Bigley to get called up to the Miracle. Also, Hicks is in Fort Myers this morning participating in Extended Spring Training, so while it’s still possible he might be the one getting called up to Beloit, it’s unlikely.
