Brett Cecil is up
The Jays have sent David Purcey to AAA (along with Brian Burres and Bryan Bullington) and recalled Brett Cecil, Robert Ray and Brian Wolfe.
That sure is a lot of Brians (or Bryans) on the move!
Cecil had a wonderful spring and almost made the team, then struggled with an 0-3, 8.31 ERA in 4 starts at AAA Las Vegas. He still has a ton of potential though.
I guess JP thinks he struggled because his ego was hurt not making the team rather then struggled because his stuff was bad.

I like him...
But I’m not sure about how he’s going to do in the majors. He’s pitching in AL East, so should it be expected that he gets roughed up a bit, or is he going to be an immediate impact starter?

Cecil's AAA stats
are very misleading.
Last year, he ended his season with the Jays’ then AAA affiliate of Syracuse.
6 starts, 30.2 IP. 2-3, 4.11 ERA 31/16 K/BB
Now the Jays have moved their AAA affiliate to Las Vegas of the PCL. A hitters’ park in a hitters’ league.
In 2 starts in Vegas, Cecil has pitched 7.1 innings. 3/5 K/BB. 0-2, 13.50 ERA.
On the road, in 2 starts, Cecil has pitched 10 innings. 6/3 K/BB. 0-1, 2.70 ERA.
Take away those two disaster starts in Vegas (an environment he will not be facing with the Jays) and he has been solid in AAA. He won’t go more than 5 IP per start at this point, but Burres has been a disaster and Purcey has not been able to find the strike zone with any consistency.
I’m a little more nervous about Robert Ray, but I have the feeling that after Saturday’s start against the Orioles, he will be sent back down to make way for the return of one of Litsch, Romero or Janssen.

I love Brett Cecil
But I do not love the Way the Jays are treating their pitchers…
while I do understand they have massive problems with Romero and McGowan on DL
and Marcum out for the entire year.
But stil, they’re starting to pull a Texas Ranger on me… Yikes

We don't have anyone
I don’t think it’s permanent. Our pitching staff has been decimated.

I can't believe
his promotion isn’t getting more publicity. It wouldn’t shock me if he had ROY type of run in the Majors.

I think people would be more excited if he hadnt had a double digit ERA at AAA...

three starts
and look at the context. best hitters’ park in a hitter’ league. three starts. still got groundballs and gave up no homers. and it was three starts.

I dont think people are jumping ship on him as a prospect or anthing...
Im just saying, publicity-wise, I think the lack of hype has to do with how he’s performed this year so far. If he was dominating the minors and got called up there’d be 8 threads about him…
