Prospect Smackdown: Daryl Jones vs. Desmond Jennings

Who do you guys wins this debate.  To me, this will be a very interesting year for these two as both are in AA and are very similar.  Granted Jones was better last year, many weren't sure how'd he do this year.  So far, Jones is hitting .333 with a .441 OBP and a near .900 OPS.  His BB/K is outstanding at 7/6 in 48 AB's.  Jones also has 3 stolen bases.  Desmond Jennings was injuried all of last year, but has returned this year to the electric player he was in 2007.  Jennings so far this year is hitting .333 with a .594 slugging percentage and a .981 OPS.  Jennings has a 4/12 BB/K ratio in 69 AB's and has stolen 6 bases.  Jennings has more XBH's 10 to Jones's 4 but also has 21 more AB's.  Jennings was born in october 1986 while Jones was born in late June of 1987.  Jennings is 8 months older than Jones.  To me, this will be a great discussion.

Jennings

I’d take Jennings. Tools are a bit better, bat is better. Jones has really come a long way re: plate discipline but not sure how much power he’ll show against real competition outside of favorable conditions. Not that Jennings will be the epitome of slugger but I think he has more power potential than the forecasts indicate.

Jennings is the way to go.

you can't say that ...

jones was better last year because jennings was out almost the whole year with an injury.

great topic!

i would vote for jennings as well.

i think jones is a safer pick, but i’m impressed with what jennings has put up so far. he missed a lot of playing time last yr, and most people were just hoping he would repeat low/high A with similar numbers as in 2007. so far he’s the better player across the boards than jones. the only thing jones is better at so far is bb/k. but since jennings is considered to have pretty good plate discipline, i think jennings will close this gap once he has a bit more playing time under his belt.

i think schafer can be a 20-20 type of hitter with good defense. maybe a better version of coco crisp.

jennings has the ceiling of a monster. if everything goes right he’d be carl crawford with walks, and 20hrs. i’m not expecting everything to go right, but i’m just saying his ceiling is huge.
