Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

SP - Carlos Gutierrez' hot start

The much controversal Twins 1st round pick last year (Via Tori Hunter) 2008 Draft

A converted Closer from Miami to a Starting pitcher for Ft. Myers (in A+).

Gutierrez in a small sample size has been very good (to say the least) through 3 games slated here are Carlos' numbers:

W  L ERA  G GS CG          IP    H   R ER    HR  HBBB SO WHIP HLD GF

               0    0  0.50 4  3    0     0   18.0  8   2    1      0       1   2     9   0.56    0       1

LHP Tyler Robertson, RHP Michael McCardell (just threw a 1 hitter) , RHP David Bromberg, and RHP Deolis Guerra (part of Johan Santana trade)

are also in that Rotation for Ft. Myers is this one of the best rotations in High A Ball out there anywhere today?

ya know

Kinslerhomer actually is making a constructive comment, as he’s suggesting a particular action to take. Which is the gist of constructive criticism. A non-constructive criticism would be something like “you suck” or something, just negative but w/o any suggested moves to make.

He should have given the reason though.

Initially I thought the comment was not constructive. The content was a bit thin, but I thought it was better to add something than complain. I didn’t realize though, until I moved on to the next diary, that in addition to being thin, it is a duplicate topic.

If I had realized that I wouldn’t have commented on this one. It really should be deleted as a courtesy. It might make a decent comment in the other diary.

I've seen four of those guys pitch.....

It’s been awhile since I’ve seen Guerra, but I’ve seen Robertson, McCardell, and Gutierrez all this year.

Gutierrez looks good, low 90’s with the FB, and a very nice slider which he’s not afraid to throw behind in the count. Saw only a few changeups. He does have the size and body to maybe be a good SP prospect (rather than a bullpen arm) if he can develop that changeup.

McCardel is your standard big mid-round righty back of rotation candidate with a high 80’s fastball and good command of his secondary stuff. He was throwing 4 pitches, using both a curve and slider frequently, and getting outs with both.

Robertson look like a different pitcher from when I saw him last year. I thought he had a better fastball with some upside there. Now, he looks like he’s sitting mid-80s, with better command of his secondary stuff, but with a ceiling as a #5 SP at best. Just doesn’t look like much of a prospect at all, very fringy stuff.

Gutierrez Change up

Hmmmmm, I’d heard his change up was his plus pitch, MLB ready. It odd he did use it too much or it needs to be developed.

sinker

I think it was his sinker that was MLB ready.

Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?

yep your right,

The statline for CG's last start looked weird

7 ip, 2 h, 1 k, 0 bb

So I looked further.

GO/AO – Gutierrez, C 17-3

That’s pretty impressive.

9 Ks in 18 IP?

Forget about it. None of the other stats are worth anything in this small a sample size.

yeah I was gonna say

pretty unspectacular strikeout total.

Um

Couldn’t you also say the same about that stat too?

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

You could, but...

strikeouts and walks are easily the least affected by sample size out of the stats given.

by PissedMick on Apr 27, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Hmmm

Is that because every umpire has the same exact strike zone?

Agree in general

Sample size is important to note here. But at the same time, a guy with a scouting report that calls his sinker MLB ready, to post the 17:3 rate, and limit free passes (2 in 18 IP), is noteworthy at this stage of the game. Particularly when the guy was drafted in the 1st round and is being converted from college closer to professional starter. He should be a fun guy to follow.

We have a word for players with nothing but a sinker and good command

Well, actually, two words: Carlos Silva.

My dictionary gave me a different answer...

Derek Lowe.

To me, sinkerballers are still the great unknown. At the top end of the spectrum you have Halladay and Webb, while at the bottom end you have the Silva’s of the world. Somewhere in the middle you have innings eaters guys like Fausto, Wang, Lowe, etc., who at one point or another have put together Cy Young seasons (and it’s probably not fair to just call them innings eaters). While it’s early to project a future career path for a guy just drafted last year, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt right now based mostly on his pedigree (1st rd pick, U of M standout) that he has a chance to become a middle tier sinkerballer.

No, you see, Derek Lowe has a second pitch (and only throws his fastball ~60% of the time)

Carlos Gutierrez, I can actually tell you from having personally watched him several times during the College World Series (a rarity for me— I don’t tend to see a lot of amateur ball), doesn’t.

Maybe he’ll add one, in which case presumably (if the pitch is any good) his K rate will trend upward. Right now he’s in Livan Hernandez territory.

Livan Hernandez territoy?

Well, that is exceptional then

Livan in his prime was devastatingly good at times.
