Hosmer: Too early to show concern?
After last night's 0-4 with 3 K's, his line on the season is now:
.140 Avg 43 AB 2 R 6 H 2 2B 0 3B 0 HR 4 RBI 5 BB 17 K .224 OBP .186 SLG
He is also now 2 for his last 32 with 15 Ks.
I know it's only a small sample size and he is very young and an elite talent, but when is it time to start showing concern over his performance or lack of. His BABIP is a pretty low .231, and he has a pretty decent LD% of 19%. However, the K/BB ratio is a little troubling.
Any thoughts?

Too early? Yes
Moustakas was had a line of .190/.253/.226 through April before he started crushing the ball in the summer. The MWL is a tough pitchers league, and is especially tough for high school hitters from warm weather states because it is so cold early in the season.
If I looked at Hosmer’s line without evaluating any other variables, I would be concerned, but I’ve seen this movie too many times now to get worried. He’ll start warming up once the weather starts warming up.
Can you be concerned... Sure
Should you panic, NO.
He is a HS hitter getting his first real taste of full season professional baseball. Hopefully he catches on sooner, rather than later, but it was not like he was expected to fly through the KC system. He will still take 3 to 4 years to make it to the majors.
Would I in KC’s shoes have taken Smoak instead? Probably. But that is more because of the value of a guy in AA and AAA in a year vs. A and A+. By the time Hosmer is ready, Smoak most likely will have 1 1/2 years of MLB experience.
I mentioned something about this the other night in a gameday thread
I’m not really concerned so much as I’m surprised. But yeah, the Midwest League is brutal. I guess it’ll be more of a concern if this continues into the summer months.
If there’s one thing that really does bother me, it’s that the guy has been utterly brutal against lefties. Again not unusual for a young lefty bat, but it’s pretty bad even by those standards – he’s basically been an auto-K against them.
too soon
It is WAY too soon to worry about Hosmer.
If he’s hitting .140 in July we can start to worry
