Hollands first seven Fastballs
...in the majors:
97, 96, 96, 97, 94, 97, 97
according to MLB Gameday.
I think the Rangers might have found a power lefty. Of course, He came in with the bases cheesed for his major league debut, thats a way to start a career. It will be interesting to see how long he lasts in the pen with Harrison absolutely struggling to get it going in the rotation.

He's just.........
pumped up when he settles down he’ll stop over throwing and settle into the 93-94 range. Same thing happened to Hanson in his first ST outting, he was mid-upper 90s even hitting 99 but after that he settled down to his normal 93-94 range.
RP bump
When a SP moves to RP, generally you’ll see a 2-3 MPH increase on the fastball.
The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.
You guys realize...
that if you take 3 mph off his all his pitches he’s still one of the hardest throwing LH starters in the game, right?
He looks nasty. It cant be long before they give in to temptation and give him a spot start.
and the thing
i love is that he just pounds the zone. As a starter, I imagine he’ll sit righ at 93 and can touch higher. Im not sure who the hardest throwing LHP are, but I imagine thats about as hard as Johann Santana or Jon Lester.
Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.
Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.
Kazmir
I think Kazmir is probably the hardest thrower on average, and I’m pretty sure that he’d be throwing harder than Santana is he was sitting 93.
Hardest throwing lefty = CC
but Kazmir is up there.
Earlier in his career Santana’s avg velo was right around 93, but over his career he’s avg somewhere a bit higher than 91.0

Eh...
Average fastball velocities for 2009/2008:
Sabathia – 93.9/93.7
Kazmir – 89.9/91.7
Lester – 92.0/92.1
Santana – 91.0/91.2
I know we’re just talking SPs, but it bears mentioning that Billy Wagner was the freak of freaks…
Hamels...
Out of curiosity, where is his average fastball sitting?
Nevermind… as I was typing that I figured they would have the info at Fangraphs and they do. For 2007 and 2008, he was at 90.4. This year, he is at 88.1…. hmmmmm….

I've never thought of Hamels as a fireballer
for whatever that’s worth.

heavy ball
yeah, was at the game…throws a heavy ball..good heat, good poise, and broke a lot of bats..this kid is a keeper..
Good stuff, thanks.

Doug---
Isn’t the top chart in your Scouting report the best use of F/X? Velocity is nice, but it really isn’t the exciting part of F/X.
Unless your doing it just to get the hit on your site. Then I totally understand lol.
Remember: baseball guys... baseball...
Reading the game reports
the poise is nice. He just kept going on the questionable strike call to Barajas (according to media reports, I was working unfortunately), and didn’t get flustered at the situation he entered with. Nice debut. In the rotation inside of 6 weeks is my guess.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I'll take the under...
on that six week guess lol. At least for a spot start or two.

that's weird
watching the game on foxsports i never saw the gun go above 94, i was actually commenting sarcastically about “how hard he throws” because it kept saying 92, 93 and it thought it was weird since he allegedly hits upper 90s on occassion as a starter and he was relieving…i didn’t watch his first inning when he came into the jam, so maybe he was throwing harder then, or maybe there is a huge difference in what mlb and fsn are saying
i’m not trying to argue, just think it is really weird that mlb would be saying numbers that high unless he just had a 5 mph avg fastball drop after a couple batters that i missed

It said he was 94 for most of the first pitches
but it did hit 96 several times in the broadcast.
the preceding post was a great success.
no,
the MLB gameday tracker was consistently posting higher MPH readings throughout the game. Im not sure why the stadium gun was less, but it was like that throughout the game. You can go back and look at it if you’d like.

He wasnt throwing as hard later on in the game obviously though, but he still was consistenlty around 93-97 on the gameday tracker.
I think in the end, if you took out one odd reading that said 86 FB (his slider and changeup are both around that speed), his avg FB was at 94.3 and his maximum was 97.1.

86 MPH pitch happened
during the Rod barajas at-bat in the 7th for those who wish to verify…. The tracker is for some reason having a hard time loading for me, but its the right link, just might have to refresh.

I was watching the Texas feed
and checked the MLB Gameday pitch summary. The gun on the broadcast apparently rounded down – so 96.4 became 96 – while the Gameday summary rounded up – so 96.4 became 97.
haha...
well, i just went perusing through some of the FB velocities of starters over the last few years, and its amazing, if you are a left handed SP with an avg velocity of over 91 MPH, you are almost certaintly going to be pretty good. The only example of a pitcher who hasnt been well above average for the most part was Oliver Perez, but even then, if you go back and look at the times he was good, like in 2004, he just has to throw strikes.
I think that bodes well for two guys this year, Clayton Kershaw and Derek Holland… Obviously, Kershaw is already showing what he has, and I think he’ll be one of the best pitchers in the game for a while. Holland has farther to go, but i dont think its a stretch to see Holland being as good as a guy like Eric Bedard, Scott Kazmir, or Jon Lester some where down the line.

He throws
alot like him… the way they both jump off the rubber towards the plate is very similar. Im guessing thats how Holland gets his FB up there.

Traded Holland and Hosmer for Lincecum
Ths off-season. it’s a keeper league. The way we work it, Lincecum took up 600+ points of my 4550 freeze point total.
Put it this way. I am glad Hosmer is struggling in the Midwest league right now.
You should
also be glad that Holland, as great as he is, still has to pitch half his games in Ameriquest Field for the foreseeable future.
I think
if you look at the park factors, you’ll realize that it really isnt much of a factor… Especially for LHP who can neutralize the advantage LH have at RBiA, I dont think RH have much of a bump at all because of the park.

no doubt he throws hard but
im sure he was a bit pumped up and put a lot of “oomf” to those fastballs haha
Happiness is only real when shared
yep, for sure, although, I think as a follower
of a prospect its really nice to see that the reports that the kid can touch 97-98 with his fastball are legit. I dont expect for him to avg 94-95 with his FB as a starter. Id bet we see him settle in with around a 92-93 average velocity on his FB. Which, according to 2008’s # would put him right there with Jon Lester as one of the top 3 hardest throwing lefties, both behind CC. Now, this year, I think Kershaw is at 92.5 so far this year, but Holland still will likely be a top 5 or so hardest throwing LH starter if he gets the oppurtunity to do so.

Reports had him sitting mid 90's and throwing 97-98
as a starter, but reports often exaggerate but it is good to see that he does have the ability. I expect him to sit about what you mentioned with the ability to get up into the upper 90’s.
