Monday 4/20 Minor League Thread
PCL-Nashville is at New Orleans and Brett Sinbeil (1-1 11.57) takes his crack at slowing down Mat "The Bat" Gamel. Good luck Brett but, I'm not hopefull. Mat has been amazing thus far - 10 Games, 11 Runs, 14 Rbi, 9 XBH's, hitting .436. Shoot, if he can go three games in a row without an error he might get his ass to the big leagues.
Round Rock is at Iowa and speaking of amazing, Iowa's Jake Fox has been that through 11 games- 7 Bombs and 50 TB's in 46 AB's. I know he'll be 27 in July but, wow.
IL- Micheal Bowden is going for Pawtucket vs Lehigh Valley. He's tossed 2 scoreless already too
Eastern League- Jake Arrieta deals for Bowie vs Erie
Southern League- Jeremy Hellickson goes for Montgomery vs Mobile. He's been unscored upon his first 2 starts.
Texas League- Dan Cortes goes for NW Arkansas and tries to get his season untracked (0-2 8.10). asking a guy to repeat the TL is cruel and unusual punishment.
The sublime Jhoulys Chacin pitches for Tulsa vs the Padres AA kids tonight
Cal League- Angel V is the shit. After all he's been yakked on about - here he is - 18 years old and raking in the Cal League. .393 3 Bombs, 10 Games. I'm sure all we'll here about is the o walks though- lol - Lake Elsinore is at San Jose.
Carolinja League- The sweet left arm of Danny Duffy takes the mound for Wilmington vs Salem, as well as the rest of him.
Speaking of sweet left arms, Jeff Locke takes the mound for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Jason Heyward plays for them as well. He's good
FSL- Only one game today in the FSL, Daytona at Dunedin. Just wanted to take this opportunity to say that the folks in Sarasota got to see a legend blaze through those parts this weekend - Jupiter's Micheal Stanton - he homered in all three games of the series and went 5-5 in the capper- thats 8-11, 3 bombs, 7 rbi.
I also think he is behind only Mr. Wieters as the second best prospect in the game. The key is to see these things before they happen guys not "Uh, Im worried about the strikouts so Im gonna wait and see how he does in the FSL..."
Anybody can say "gee, he's awesome " now. Its gonna get worse too. I dont think ANYBODY will be questioning this kid by mid-season. Of course I overestimate the audience here at times :-)
Enjoy the games! Talk amongst yourselves

so stanton had a hot series and big V hit in the cal league
i don’t think that proves what you think it does.
it’s certainly better than them shitting the bed, but there;s still legitimate questions as to whether either of them will make enough contact to be a starter at the major league level.
brian mccann: derek lowe's got the best slider i've ever seen
john smoltz: yeah? and josh bard's the best catcher i've ever thrown to.

well its still too early to make any conclusions
but angel also only has 6 k’s on the year in about 40 AB’s. Still would like to see a couple free passes though.

No questions dude
There areen’t any questions about whether Mike Stanton will hit enough to be a starter in the big leagues and the sooner you realize that, the smarter you’ll be. He’ll strike out alot AND be star just like many players with monster power do.
I also dont think that Stanton having a hot series is the reason he’s a great prospect but a RESULT of him being one.
Angel V, I hve no idea how great he’ll be but just that it would be funny if somebody pointed out he wasnt walking much when the baseball is looking like a grapefruit right now.

Hard to argue..
Its pretty clear to most that he is a fantastic prospect who should be near the top 15 of any list. But he does have contact concerns that could develop as he moves on. So does Maybin, Big V, etc. etc. Its not uncommon.
Remember: baseball guys... baseball...

ha
I’m pretty sure Mike Stanton will be good enough to be a starter in the Major Leagues. You must be exaggerating.

Casejud fail
David Price is still ahead or directly behind Mr. Wieters. No matter how much stupid juice you’re drinking, Stanton is behind those two (if not many others)

He is off to a good start in AA. I was amazed he was left off of both BA and BP’s top 100 lists. The worst stat for him is a <.50 GB/FB rate.

Hellickson is one of those guys who just seems to be completely underrated. I don’t get it. I know he doesn’t have lights out stuff, but neither does Tim Alderson and he’s on every list and most of the time north of the Top 40 prospects. I think Hellickson compares more than favorably to him among many others.

Hellickson stuff
I think the problem that most have with Hellickson is that he succeeds mostly through his command of a pretty-good-but-not-more-than-that fastball. His secondary stuff projects to be no more than average. His style of pitching should get him through the minors with some very pretty numbers, but might not hold up against upper-level competition.
I do think he’s being somewhat underrated, but I suspect he’s a solid No. 4 starter, not more and not less. Looks like Yusmeiro Petit (also underrated IMO) with a touch less command and a touch more fastball. Is that a good thing or a bad thing for you?
Alderson has a comparable fastball (maybe a bit less, actually), but has a good looking curve to go with it. That extra go-to pitch is a big separator.

pitching performances
were all over the place… Main doesnt have his CB working at all, just cant get the grip so far and the Cal League doesnt forgive pitchers.
Poveda had a really solid start, the one walk he gave up was the reason he gave up those two runs. Hopefully he can continue to build off that, I like his stuff alot and I think he knows how to pitch. He sat around 91-92 today was able to throw his great changeup behind in counts for strikes. Jones dominated in his Relief outing, Jose ‘Jumbo’ Diaz sounds like a big time sleep to me, the guy consistently throws 96 with a slider that sounds nasty. Font was all over the place in his outing, how he didnt give up a run is anyones guess. If he figures out how to control his stuff, he could be the best pitching prospect we hve.
Chris (NJ): I am personally offended at how you ranked a prospect from my favorite team, even though I do not know said prospect, nor have I ever seen him play. In my opinion you only have your job because, like your employers, you have an unholy bias towards my favorite team’s rival. Also, you’re short.
Keith Law: You’re right. I am short.

Chacin pitched pretty well....
No SO but he did only allow 2 ER. I am thinking he will be in AAA by midsummer.
