Community Mock Draft: Pick 1-3

With 45% of the vote, UNC's Dustin Ackley is the #2 pick in our community mock draft.  USC's Grant Green was the clear-cut runner-up, garnering 26% of the vote.  With the Padres on the board now, however, there's a pretty good chance that the #3 pick will be a pitcher.  Let's see what sort of reasoning we can come up with for them.

As always, I'd like for this to be with realism in mind. So, take into account, if you will, what a team might need, how a team might draft, what a team might spend, etc.  Each poll will consist of 10 players and will last 48 hours.  Players will be listed alphabetically by last name.  I'm basing the listed players off of multiple other mock drafts, but feel free to suggest someone to be added/removed.

Let's try to have a little more conversation in the threads.  Just as important as WHO you vote for is WHY you vote for them.  :-)

Thanks, and have fun!

Crow

He’d be my pick here because they need young pitching.

by Jay212033 on Apr 19, 2009 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

That's why I picked Matzek.

Crow’s mechanics scare pretty much anyone, and having already had a yearlong layoff, they’ll want someone younger with upside. Grant Green’s really been suspect, and has been hurting his draft stock every weekend pretty much, so I don’t see him going here, either.

Green

They’re sorely in need of a SS, also.

Re

I don’t think Green will stick at SS.

You'll see many different opinions on that.

But you’ll generally hear that his bat isn’t good enough to really stick anywhere other than a middle infield spot. He’s not Evan Longoria or Tulo, so teams are starting to look at his realistic skill-set rather than dreaming of what he could become.

Both Crow and White have concerns.

Crow’s mechanics have been written about a lot, and White has had some issues of his own considering how much scouts don’t like the arm action of guys who throw splitters as much as White does.

College Impact

It seems as though the team needs as much immediate help as possible. You can pretty much write off any prep selections. Going into the season, Green would have made considerable sense, but this season has been very telling. A lack of consistent power and questions regarding his defensive capabilities at SS provide too many uncertainties for the 3rd overall pick. With Peavy soon to leave and only the oft-injured Chris Young providing any substantive talent within the rotation, selecting a college arm like White or Crow seems like the most logical move for the organization.

Yeah... Really weak team.

Wait! Were you talking about the 4-8 Giants or 9-4 Padres?

Peavy isn’t soon-to-leave. He has full no-trade. Moores/Moorad allowed the Padres to have an extra few million to keep him. And the Padres have a lot more pitching that will be ready in 1-3 years than most experts say.

I expected this system to be thin, but if you sit down and look at it, it is not as bad as people say.

Overall this system needs more impact talent, especially on the pitching side, but it is not as bad as it’s reputation, and I kept finding guys that I didn’t want to leave out.

From John Sickles’ Padres 2009 prospect previews

I don’t disagree with your choice of White for the Padres at #3 (though I voted for Green) but I don’t agree with the reasons stated.

Davis

Isn’t a HS OF, and shouldnt be on this list anyway.

Crow

While Crow hasn’t pitched yet, everything I’ve heard about him, from all sources, is that he is the best non-Strasbourg pitcher on the market – of course, this could all change if he doesn’t show his stuff in May

by ofsticksandbats on Apr 20, 2009 2:30 PM EDT reply actions

from all sources

That’s not the case at all. There’s a huge, huge split over who the best non-Strasburg pitcher is, and Alex White, Crow, Kyle Gibson, Tyler Matzek, and Matt Purke all have been favored at one point or another.

Green is the pick that SD goes with at #3

College position players like Green move quickly and he plays a premium position at SS. With the comparisons to Longoria or Tulo, even if not quite there, that is high praise. Green is a SoCal guy to boot. The Padres could use all the good press they can get. White and Crow are good pitchers but when the chance to get the college SS comes along, SD should take it this time. No more Stephen Drew episodes.
