Community Mock Draft: Pick 1-2

Figured this might be a fun thing to start.  Now, I've been looking at a lot of Mock Drafts lately, and none of them seem to agree (except for the first overall pick).  So, let's get this started to see what we come up with.

ON THE CLOCK: Seattle Mariners (#1-2)

Now, I'd like for this to be with realism in mind. So, take into account, if you will, what a team might need, how a team might draft, what a team might spend, etc.

Each poll will consist of 10 players and will last 48 hours.  Players will be listed alphabetically by last name.  I'm basing the listed players off of multiple other mock drafts, but feel free to suggest someone to be added/removed.

Thanks, and have fun!

Have to go with my mock.

Dustin Ackley, who played some center field this week.

Your draft order on the back end of the round is a little mixed up.

It should go like this, with changes starting at #28:

28. Red Sox
29. Yankees
30. Rays
31. Cubs
32. Rockies

The Yankees don’t have a 2nd first round pick in there, so there’s just 32 in the first round.

Ackley is a stud

Either him or Grant Green, but I’ll give the nod to Dustin.

Matt Purke

Is who Seattle will likely take

That's what I think, too

I like Purke a lot, and I think Seattle could really use a true SP prospect.

Purke

do you have him before Matzek?

Marcus Lemon is the Third Baseman/Leadoff Hitter of the future.

Purke

He could make that solid lefty set up man the mariners have been waiting for to go with morrow aumont and fields. (Sense the sarcasm)

If you want realism...

then Strasburg goes here I believe. It may be a homer call, but I am still not sold on the Nationals wanting, or willing, to pay Strasburg what he is going to demand, and then also sign another 1st round pick.

And why is that?

Because they are always willing to pay out the big bucks to get young talent? Ask Ryan Zimmerman how his contract negotiations are going. Because they are willing to pay for drafted pitchers? Tell that to Aaron Crow. Or because no one has ever passed up on a “the best college pitcher since…” because they know they won’t want to pay him what he is demanding? Tell that to Mark Prior and the Twins. I think it is a very real possibility that the Nats take two very good players in this draft with their two top ten picks rather than take Strasburg and break the bank on him and then have to value draft at #10.

Ask Ryan Zimmerman how his contract negotiations are going.

They actually seem to be going just fine…he’ll have a new contract shortly..

But you're not realizing

Indirectly, the Nationals have been marketed with Strasburg for months now. Nationals fans (however few they are) are already pinning all their hopes on him. He is the future of the franchise, and everyone around baseball has been saying this for, again, months.

If they were to take anyone other than Stephen Strasburg, the Nationals would be under such scrutiny from fans and the media that it would be borderline unbearable. Especially after the Esmailyn fiasco, the team could use the positive media that Strasburg would bring (and, even more importantly, I don’t think the current personnel could survive the negative media that passing up Strasburg would bring).

The more likely scenario, and the scenario that has been factored into most mocks so far, is that Washington takes a bit of a reach with the #10 pick, in order to allocate some money for Strasburg.

And I think that could happen...

but I still think there is a chance that he drops to Seattle at #2. Granted, it’s not a big chance, maybe 10%, but still a chance. Let us Mariner fans hope. Don’t kill our pipe dreams lol.
