Mat Latos

Haven't heard a lot about this kid, but I drafted him in my keeper this year in the late rounds. Upon futher review it looks like he has nasty stuff and his numbers are impressive, though in small sample sizes. This year it looks like he's 22, pitching in Single-A again with 23ks in 17ip. I'm guessing he moves up to Double-A soon.

What is everyone's take on him?

Latos

He hasn’t pitched yet this year, he has an ankle problem and is still in extended Spring Training if I’m not mistaken. If he proves healthy, he can be a fast riser, but he’s been pretty consistently injured so far, no serious arm problems if I recall however.

BA

I can’t even read BA anymore. They’re so rah-rah and seem swayed easily by the information GMs and scouting directors feed them. I’m a sports writer. I’ve spoken with a few of them privately and always get the straight word from them. Then I read them and wonder: Why are they writing stuff that’s counter to what they just told me?

I think they write to appease people. I understand the pressure, but you can’t succumb.

I love Sickels. I have spoken with him as well. What you read is what he thinks.

As for Latos, he’s on my farm roster as well. I look at him as Eric Cyr The Second Time Around. At least Latos hasn’t been implicated in any airline bathroom drama. Yet.

umm

Sorry, dude, no offense, but a post like this doesn’t have much credibility. You don’t name yourself, you can’t name your sources, but we’re supposed to accept your word that a national publication with a significant following prints information that is contrary to what they actually know? Good luck with that.

Not a problem ...

John also doesn’t name his sources when it comes to player evaluations. He sometimes writes of “makeup questions” with certain players, yet never identifies who makes these assessments.

Do you accept his opinions word for word? Oh you do? Oh it’s different? OK.

what does BA say?

Doesn’t have to be word for word, but sum it up…

Most of Latos' makeup questions...

…come up from his HS reports. I’m more worried that he hasn’t gone past 60 IP in a season… Front of the rotation stuff though…
