todd frazier started off today 3/5 with a double.
david robertson did his thing (3 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 7 K).
fernando martinez is 2/4 with a pair of XBH.
justin smoak has a pair of doubles and a walk in a texas league doubleheader.
gerardo parra's got 2 hits.
john lucroy's got a hit.
does anyone know what's going on with clayton mortenson? he's yet to make a start, and he was a guy i had an eye on as a quick impact SP.
open thread, as always.

aaron cunningham separated shoulder
home plate collision
could be out for several weeks to months depending on the severity. a bit disappointing, but looks like surprisingly sean doolittle jumps ahead in the A’s OF prospect depth chart, playing RF in AAA

nah, he needed to get out of florida
i mean, he’d look great in RF and all, but he needed a fresh start with a new organization.
i paid a huge premium to get him in my DMB league this past offseason, but it’s really fun to watch someone who’s that good at what he does. it’s not even that he’s toolsy anymore, he’s just really great at hitting (and he has been for a while).

Haven't posted in a long long time...
have been busy trying to get a start up to get going and START UP ALREADY!
But this post just reminded me of the endless threads that went on a couple of years ago about how the community overrated Dukes, how it ruined the credibility of the community and all that jazz. I remember debating the warning signs about D Young at the same time. Interesting to see how things work out, and highlights the value of this site,
Meanwhile, Kelvin De La Cruz is going to be a beast, and what do people know about Scarpetta? From everything I can find, looks like a guy who could bust out in a big way.

Scarpetta
He better cause the clock is ticking on him already. Brewers had to use an option on him due to renegotiating his contract.

Kelvin De La Cruz
I’m liking the results. What’s his stuff like?
by LQ on Apr 14, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
De La Cruz...
He’s a lefty whose velocity has increased each of the last 3 seasons, and now it’s in the low-90s.
Even with the lefty heat, he still ranked as having the best curve in the Indian system. Granted that ranking is relative within the system, but it was encouraging. BA mentions his change showing promise. He’d also increased his %ks over the past 3 years, and is one of the youngest pitchers at that level.
His performance last year wasn’t too bad, his Lo-A stats were ok, but my thought was that if he continued to improve his velocity as he fills out, and bumps that velocity into the mid-90s, then he could be on the way to elite.

His problem has been control
Walking 4.5 guys per 9 career.
by alskor on Apr 14, 2009 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's true...
But it really wasn’t that bad in his stint in the SAL league last year, just a bit over 3 per 9.
And as the next post mentioned, that I failed to, the GB% rate was something my partner mentioned to me which made De La Cruz an even more interesting breakout candidate. GB% is not a stat I’ve really given much thought to over the years, but I’ve decided to try using it as another evaluation data point this year and see what happens.

de la cruz came on to my radar last year when i noted his quite good GB rate (54% at lake county)
that part of his game appears to be forgotten, but he’s got a hell of an arm.

re: Mortensen
Will be starting tomorrow, would have started tonight, but last nights game was rained out.
The Memphis rotation has good depth with decent prospects in Boggs, Walters, Ottavino, Hawksworth, and Mortensen. Hence why he is going in the 5th game of the season.

how cold is it in Buffalo?
must be hell to play up there in April. Martinez’s XBHs were a homer and a double. Nice start to the year for him.

I haven't followed prospects for very long...
But what are some comparable tandems to these two. It is awfully impressive to have two hitters like these guys at the same age and same level.

Babe Ruth and Lou Gherig
come to mind :-) Okay, they didnt exactly come up together but I was just being a smartass.
Is it that unusual though?
Seriously though, I think last years’ Huntsville team with LaPorta, Gamel, Salome, Escobar etc… will be looked at as pretty unusual in a few years

Speaking of hitters...
Mat “The Bat” Gamel took fellow-stud Derek Holland deep in the first inning tonight.
Lets update his early rampage on PCL pitching shall we?
10 Hits in 18 Ab’s – batting .556
3 Doubles, 2 Dingers, 19 Total bases, 3 Walks, 2 K’s
He also made his 3rd error in his 5th game at 3b- love ya Mat! Keep working hard.
Also, Greg Halman blasted a 3-Run Homer in the first inning vs Royals Rayner Oliveros. Let me guess- fastball right? Lol

When will Mat "the fumble" Gamel be up in the Majors? (I kid about fumble...kinda)
and what position does he play?
by asyouwish33 on Apr 13, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Pretty Sure
He’s playing 3rd Base in the Majors..when he gets called up
by patsrock58 on Apr 13, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
doubt it
If they do it would be a horrible idea. The brewers made a conscious decision to move Braun off 3B because of his defensive woes, and I think most would agree that Gamel is worse. I doubt they would do that.
I say they move him to RF for a month, and trade Cameron to the Yankees. Shift Hart over to center. UZR has him at +6 in CF last season per 150 games.
Remember: baseball guys... baseball...

Too esoteric for most
but i can actually ASSURE you,if you are interested, that Gamel is not worse than Ryan Braun was at the hot corner. Gamel started 27 double plays lat year at Huntsville which would have taken Braun about 3 seasons to do. Gamel has some skills over there but is still very error-prone obviously.

Sorry
I don’t see a correlation between double plays and someone’s overall fielding ability.
Remember: baseball guys... baseball...
by Metty5 on Apr 14, 2009 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You should
A great way to see if a 3b in the minors (or majors) has fielding skills is to look at how many double plays they have started- it is a difficult play and if you start 27, you can play. He has other faults- such as being not so surehanded and erratic throwing – but he has some range, athletic ability and skill over there.

Lambo 2-2
Is he jumping up on more lists?
by asyouwish33 on Apr 13, 2009 9:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Oh sure
It’s hard to rake in the Midwest League, but he did it. And now he’s doing it as a 20 year old in AA, which is probably even more impressive. More of a track record and performance against higher level competition means he’s moving up.
Still wonder where he’ll fit on defense and maybe that limits my enthusiasm for him a bit, but at least he looks like he’ll have enough bat to be solid wherever he happens to be playing. Of course, if “solid” isn’t quite what you’re looking for . . .
by mrkupe on Apr 14, 2009 2:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
More
He was BA’s #1 Dodger prospect and 49th overall so he is getting some love out there. KG from BP had him at 77 too. I drafted him this year so I’m a big fan as well. Defense doesn’t count in my league so his lack of position doesn’t bother a bit. They found a position for Ryan Braun, right? :)

Under the radar guy...
…but Mike Stutes, 2008 9th round pick out of Oregon St. who was double-jumped to Double-A Reading to start this year, posted the following line in his season debut against the B-Mets tonight.
5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 5 K
And speaking of Pac-10 players double-jumped to start the year — David Cooper notched his first HR of the year for Double-A New Hampshire. Hang in there, Blue Jays, help is on the way!
