At least he went out on top. On another note, calling something you dislike “gay” is so high school. There are plenty of better adjectives out there, how about giving them a shot?

when the suicide rate of gay teenagers drops below twice the national average of straight ones, you may have a point

but until then, there’s pretty clearly a substantive issue with your connotation of gay as being bad.

personally, i tend to call things such as this ‘tardboard’, but i’m sure there’s someone else who would have a problem with that (most likely the members of this message board).

No, no, no...

It’s not referring to homosexuality, just as the original word had nothing to do with homosexuality.

.A generic insult. It can mean bad, stupid, whatever you want it to mean.

That has become a common/accepted usage of the word. Gay teenagers aren’t jumping off bridges because I called a rule here gay.

Really not a debate we should be having here

Isn’t there a more articulate way of saying you think the minimum word count is stupid?

Like, well… saying “the 75-word minimum is stupid”?

I was actually thinking the same thing...

when I saw the original post. I really, really doubt slurve meant it as an insult towards homosexuals, or even in that context. But the word gay now is mostly in reference to homosexuals. And using it in a negative manner is not helping anything. It would be like saying “The Dodgers jew’d Manny down to only 20 million a year.” It has it’s own meaning now that originally started with the negative stereotype. But as long as those phrases are around, people will use them and others will take offense to them.

But also, I think people need to develop thicker skin too. Freedom of speech is no more in America. Everyone gets offended at everything.

The negative connotation of the word 'gay' has always been a reference to homosexuals

Gay meant happy and joyous, then came to mean homosexual based on the stereotype that they acted in a gay manner, then came to have a negative connotation.

It’s not really a matter of getting offended, it’s a matter of perpetuating a word that implies that a large chunk of our population is generically bad.

That's not correct

The word has taken on a different usage. Not my fault some are behind the times.

by designatedforassignment on Apr 14, 2009 1:51 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

yes it is

The reason it’s taken on different meanings is that people are tying back “gay” to mean negative. Using that as a synonym for anything stupid or dumb is explicitly because of the homosexual aspect.

Or are you saying that the 75 word limit is “extremely happy” like the original meaning of the word?

Don’t be an idiot.

galt you

just kidding

how bout that Hanson guy, eh?

In what St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called a "big day" for his club, starter Chris Carpenter took the mound for his first session of live batting practice and promptly buzzed the fuzz on catcher Jason LaRue’s chin with an errant fastball.

"Sorry," Carpenter called from the mound.

"Don’t say you’re sorry," LaRue barked back.

"He said it," pitching coach Dave Duncan said from the side of the cage, "but he didn’t mean it."

No...

A generic insult. It can mean bad, stupid, whatever you want it to mean.

That’s taken right out of an online dictionary. I’ve found similar meanings in print. Gotta love the holier than thou mentality that breaks out around here sometimes. Especially when half of the people doing the bitching probably use the term the way I did more than me in everyday life.

No I don't

I don’t care that idiots have decided to take the negative connotation of homosexuality and use it to refer to anything in a negative way. Just like how idiots say “nigger” to mean “friend”.

Your backpeddaling about “hey, no, the fact that gay is a negative jibe on homosexuals and gay ALSO means lame is completely coincidental”, is retarded logic.

Per usual, you are intentionally being a douchebag for no other reason than to be a douchebag.

by Galt on Apr 15, 2009 11:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Simply laughable

I love that galt is right in his own mind in the face of overwhelming facts. It doesn’t matter what the dictionary says… if galt says black means white, then it means white!

“Per usual, you are intentionally being a douchebag for no other reason than to be a douchebag.”

when r-tards' rate of teenage suicide approaches twice the national average, again, you may have a point

i don’t want to make this about you, because it’s a much larger issue than that, but you’re wrong here. technically, you may have a valid point about there being another definition of gay, but it’s a shit point to make, at best, and you’d do well to forget about it.

brian mccann: derek lowe's got the best slider i've ever seen

by variablesdont on Apr 16, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's plain obsurd

Comparing people who in many cases don’t even have the mental capacity to know what suicide is to gays is as ridiculous as a comp as I’ve seen on this site. And another point is that “gay-bashing” is not the sole factor in the suicide rate so quit acting like it is. Homosexuals are wired differently and have soooo many different things going on chemically. Quit lecturing like you actually know what you’re talking about. Take your suicide stats and go condescend elsewhere.

It's like saying

the word “Jew” has taken on a different meaning because a lot of people say it to mean “cheap”.

The only reason to use “gay” as a general derrogatory term is to dig on gay people.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Apr 14, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Not even close

The Jewish people have always been associated with money / being very controlling and tight with money – they are cheap is a stereotype of the Jewish community. Saying some one is being a Jew when it comes to money is a direct reflection of that. Me saying a rule is gay is not me inferring the rule likes same sex relationships. Duh!

by slurve on Apr 14, 2009 7:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think slurve is 100% correct

You people are the ones giving it the negative connotation. He provided a dictionary quote of the meaning. To this many of you replied that it meant something different. It meant something different to you. That’s not slurve’s fault. His usage of the word was entirely appropriate, if lacking in tact.

In either case, this is really silly and trivial. Everyone should just let it go.

by alskor on Apr 15, 2009 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

couple of things

I didn’t think slurve meant it as derogatory to homosexuals. But I do think the way gay is now used derived from an insult, if not to homosexuals in general, but to a prissy type of stereotypical “gay” attributed behavior. obviously, in this context, slurve only meant stupid. And he didn’t mean homosexuals are stupid. But when that use of the phrase was developing, it meant “don’t act so gay,” as in “don’t be a sissy.” Or as in ‘you like home decorating; that’s gay." Or, as used in 40-year Old Virgin “Wanna know how I know you’re gay, you made spinach dip in a carved out bread bowl.” Or something like that.

There’s a phrase you don’t hear much any more: That’s mighty white of you, as in a stand up thing to do. It kinda creeped me out. Not really sure where that originated.

There was the local politican or some such a few years back who got in trouble for using the word niggardly.

by wobatus on Apr 15, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The demise of "niggardly" is more or less a coincidence

since the word is a Scandinavian root-word with no connection whatsoever to the “negro/Niger” Latin root… and, indeed, the meaning of “niggardly” has nothing to do with any traditional black stereotypes.

“That’s white of you,” on the other hand, is an explicitly racist phrase. Just like calling something gay is an explicitly bigoted phrase. Maybe slurve is a bigot, maybe he’s just an insensitive imbecile. Either way, he did himself no favors by using that phrase.

niggardly

Yeah, I am aware niggardly is unrelated. That was more an example of ignorance or pc run amok.

Running amok is racist against malyasians. Which is also where we got ketchup.

by wobatus on Apr 15, 2009 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree. I dont believe it is an explicity bigoted phrase

The use of the word gay as a derogatory term is more like “niggardly” than it is like “mighty white of you.”

Still, I would agree he did himself no favors using it and I try to avoid it.

Gay means rubbish, says BBC

THE word "gay" now means "rubbish" in modern playground-speak and need not be offensive to homosexuals, the BBC Board of Governors has ruled.

The complainant argued that the use of the word gay in this context was homophobic. The governors said, however, that Moyles was simply keeping up with developments in English usage.

The programme complaints committee noted: "The word ‘gay’, in addition to being used to mean ‘homosexual’ or ‘carefree’, was often now used to mean ‘lame’ or ‘rubbish’. This is a widespread current usage of the word amongst young people."

What I dont understand is why slurve is being crucified over this very common usage of the word.

That's easy

What I dont understand is why slurve is being crucified over this very common usage of the word.

Some people like to use any excuse they can to dog pile around here and make themselves look like “the better man”. This has really gotten to the point of becoming mildly entertaining. I liken most of these people to little church ladies who act prim and proper in public and then go home and shag like dirty whores.

by slurve on Apr 15, 2009 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah

Certainly not as bad as “white of you”, which, now that i looked it up, does have an etymology that makes it pretty clear that it as racist as it sounds. Anyway, i wasn’t saying they are akin. I just recall that phrase being used when i was a kid once in a while and thinking it as odd.

And I understand that it NOW means rubbish, etc. (in england I guess), or lame. I was just thinking about how it got that way.

BTW, so far you are right on Mike Pelfrey. Yikes. Lotta hits, few ks, and some dingers. :)

I was never offended by the usage of said term, I just felt it to be totally unneccesary given the amount of more straightforward description words. That being said, I do think saying gay to mean something bad is derived from the connotation of gayness being bad, I don’t think you can really even argue against that. It doesn’t offend me, but sometimes it’s just easier to be a little considerate.
