What do you think about this comp....
I was looking at some prospects tonight and spent some time trying to get my brain around Logan Morrison. The name that popped into my mind as a comp for him is Todd Helton.
Heltons minor league numbers
994 AB 26HR 150K 150 BB .327 Avg. .414 obp .490 slg. .163 ISO
Morrison last year(I am not going to include all his minor league numbers because he was a high school guy, not a college guy like Helton).
488 AB 13 HR 57 BB 80 K .332 Avg .402 obp .494 slg .162 ISO
I think Helton is a good best case scenario comp for Morrison (though he may not hit as many homers since he won't be playing at Coors).
What do you think?

re: comp
It’s an interesting comp, hard to compare right now as Helton was a polished college hitter who spent little time below AA. That said I think Helton had better plate discipline, great contact hitter that helped with playing at Coors. Helton on the road is a career .294/.394/.494 hitter that averaged around 24 hr’s a year. I might expect a bit more power than that and less walks, but those stats take into account the Helton with the back injury.
I’ve heard the Morneau comp a few times which seems very possible as well.

It seems to me that every 1B prospect without plus plus power is immediately given Morneau as a comp these days...

re: race
Whats with the whole race card? Just in jest? I just noticed people said it for Dukes in another fanpost and now this. Yes sometimes people will do bad comparisons just cause they look the same, but there are merit in most of these comps.

race and comps
For whatever reason, players are overwhelmingly compared to players of their own race/ethnicity.
My favorite example is from basketball: Brent Barry, coming out of college, is about 6’6", thin, athletic, nominally a point guard but more of a 2/3, loved to take the ball to the hoop. Best comp at the time was probably a poor man’s Penny Hardaway. But because he was a “white point guard,” he was compared to John Stockton, even though “white point guard” was the sum total of what they had in common on the court…
It’s true in baseball too. Short fireballing Latino pitchers are compared to Pedro; when’s the last time you heard that applied to, say, Tim Lincecum?

Re: Morneau
Who for example, I really haven’t heard it tossed around that much. Also I think Morrison has very got power potential, though I’ve say very few have “plus plus” power … that’s like Howard/Prince territory that most will never have.

Helton
Has had a superstar career. If Morrison’s ceiling is Helton, then the chances of him reaching it are very very unlikely.
