Keeper Faceoff (2009-2011) Price vs. Greinke??
Mixed 5x5, 14 team Keeper league (keep 5), H-2-H format
My last keeper slot is a tough one. I have already made a few trades and tried too make many more, so the old advice of make a trade is likely not a viable option as many teams have a surplus of good keeper options since we only keep 5.
David Price or Zach Greinke. Either one can be kept for a $5 salary (out of $260) for the next 3 years (2009-2011). I have had Price "pencilled in" for a keeper slot given his "best SP prospect since Prior status", but am rethinking that a bit. For 2009, Greinke should likely be the better play. Price may spend time at AAA until May or June. It is a H2H league so if Price were to come up and be a stud I'd still get good value. OTOH, Greinke looked real solid last year and may be even better this year. 2010 and 2011 may be a push.
Which one would you keep and why?

Greinke
Even though he was in the majors for the playoffs last year I think Price will still have a greater learning curve than Greinke for the next year or two. And, Price will have to pitch against the Yankee and Sox lineups which I think would be much tougher than any lineups Greinke will face. I don’t think you could wrong with either though.
Agreed
I think with so few keepers, you should try to go with the safer commodity, which is Grienke in this case.
Do you have a good idea of who other teams are keeping? Would only keeping four players give you an additional early pick that could be used on a better player?
+1
Even if Price doesn’t have the learning curve that you suggest, he’s going to have a higher ceiling in the short run. Unless you think that Greinke isn’t as good as everyone says or that Price is going to go Lincecum on the AL, I’d say that Greinke’s your best bet.
Its really tough
Im inclined to say Greinke at this point – based almost totally on the fact that he’s a finished product, whereas Price could very well require a transition period where he struggles.
I gotta ask though… who are your other 4 keepers?
My other 4 Keepers
Lincecum
Bruce
Wieters
Gallardo
All 4 are dirt cheap as well < $5

Come on in, says Bill
I'd seriously consider
dumping Gallardo for Price. I don’t know if it’s something you should do in the end, but it could be worth it if you think Yovanni is going to have some problems recovering from his knee surgery.
Nope, I'd go Price....
I keep all young Stud type prospects or young MLB players only as my Keeps…
Price is also on a slightly better team in Tampa then Grienke’s Royals -in the TOUGH AL central.

Just because all the teams are roughly the same quality
doesnt make the AL Central tough. I dont think its all that tough at all, personally. The Twins and Tribe are solid, but not great. The other teams are pretty mediocre. All of these teams are kind of in a down cycle, really. BP has the Indians winning it with 86 games. That’s the least of any projected division winner: http://baseballprospectus.com/fantasy/dc/
Secondly, in what world does Zach Greinke not qualify as a “young MLB player?” Dude is 25 years old!
Well Ok the NL and AL east divisons are probably
The Top Dogs, in terms of talents and therefore probably the toughest leagues to play in, However I truley believe the AL central is right behind those 2.
+ I guess My point was is that I think from top to bottom this year, the AL central will only be seperated by about 8-10 games.
Say the Indians win the division with 89 wins, I think the last place Finisher Detroit or whoever wins 79-80+ games!

Price has Zero injury history
Grienke can’t say the same about that…
I don’t see how its no contest.
Price might have better #’s this year alone, and its a keeper league for now and the FUTURE….hmm
I got a question for everyone….if you were in a 12 team 5X5 roto keeper league that took 6 keepers a year and you had:
Lincecum
Holliday
Rollins
Matt Kemp
who would you choose for the last 2 spots between:
Garret Atkins 1B/3B
Edison Volquez SP
Russell Martin C only
and Alexi Ramirez SS
???

What is Greinke's injury history?
The fact that he’s slightly older, and has pitched much longer without serious injury, makes Greinke a better bet to stay healthy than Price.
That's a tough question
but Russell Martin is a lock. Moreso than Kemp, even. I dont know how you could consider dropping Martin.
After that I think its either Volquez or Alexei… and its a real close call.
Position Eligibility?
What are your league rules on position eligibility? Why is Ramirez eligible at SS? Shouldn’t he be a 2B? I would keep Martin and Ramirez and wouldn’t even think twice about it. Even though I do like ???s upside, you have to go with the sure thing.

Greinke
Always go for the sure thing. If it was 2011-2013, probably a different story…

i don't see how it's a different story then
i would take Zack’s long term upside over Price’s.

wrong debate
this should easily be between dumping Gallardo or Bruce.
I’m not that on Bruce as before since his call up. After I saw him bat, he did not look to have a great swing. He looks like a very overrated prospect to me. His cieling should be a lot lower that elite level. could be good but I doubt all star is sure thing.
Grienke and Price should be kept over Gallardo and Bruce.
