Community Prospect List

My take on the Community Prospect List....

Overall I don't think it is any worse than any other list. There was some evident ballot-stuffing at times, but that's equivalent to the concious and subconscious biases that all analysts have. I have some minor quibbles and a few major ones.

I think LaPorta at 10 is too high, and Lars Anderson at  21 too low. Flip those. The injured Jake McGee at 78 ahead of Aaron Poreda at 89 is crazy; Poreda should be higher and possibly in the Top 50.

agree on poreda.

i know you like him a lot, and i’m not sure i would go top 50, but it started getting ridiculous around 70 or so and he wasn’t getting much support.

Alderson

I like Tim Alderson but 12 is too high. Other than that and the Rangers fans voting up ever catcher in their system, I think the list is very good.

Definitely…that was exactly when I started to lose interest actually. I can’t remember the poll that pushed me over the edge and made me stop participating but that seemed pretty bad to me.

Giants and Rangers prospects are both inflated by ballot stuffing

by alskor on Mar 4, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

Don't forget A's prospects

It was obvious that Giants, Rangers, and A’s fans were all attempting to influence the voting results.

Brett Cecil

I am beginning to form a mancrush on Brett Cecil…I think he is the real deal. Hop on the bandwagon with me, plenty of seats still available. BP ranked him #90? How?

I heart Cecil.

I was pissed when Fangraphs did a feature on him last week. I want to pick him up for very little in my auctions/drafts this year.

Agreed

Poor man’s Brandon Webb. I got him on my team this year, and I’m psyched.

A noob or n00b is someone that lacks intellegance or common sense, most people think that noob is a word used only in the online gaming world, but in reality it is becoming an ever popular word with teenage society.

a noob could be simply a level 100 running round shouting ‘’WTF DO I GO!?’’ or someone calling someone else a noob and then getting hit with a brick, anyone can call anyone a noob, but normally they are noobs themselves

PECOTA really likes him, iirc

how much to the have to pay the Players -- that's what she said -- of the league like BA?

I will actually defend Lars at 21

He played pretty well last year with a .317/.408/.513 line. That is pretty solid, but it was done in the Cal league which is a complete launching pad and for a first base prospect to be considered a top 10-15 guy, i think they should be putting up a monster OPS.

He also struck out 107 times in 439 AB’s which should concern some. And although he looked good in limited time in AA, his BABIP was .432! Won’t come close to that this season.

I think Lars is universally getting a bit overrated. He’s a great prospect and all, but there’s no way he is top 10 material – more like borderline top 20. The power still needs to develop, his K rate is a little too high (though nothing like some others) and his BABIP was very high like Mars stated.

Personally, I agree with Callis – There isn’t much separating Hosmer, Lars, Morrison and Smoak. They are all great prospects, but each with their own concerns. The 20-30 range sounds right for all of them IMO.

Stuffing

I don’t think too many fans intentionally stuffed the ballots. I think it’s more that there are a higher number of Rangers, A’s, and Giants fans here than many other teams because of the SBN blogs for those teams being very active, coupled with the excitement those teams have over their minor league systems right now.

You have Ranger fans, in particular, very excited about the ascent of their farm system, coupled with most fans having far more knowledge of their own favorite team’s system than any other team’s minor leaguers. Really, how many people here know enough about all 30 teams’ systems to really evaluate them?

We should all be less concerned with the actual ranking than the discussions that accompany them. As John said, rankings are always filled with biases, known and unknown. I don’t think it’s even possible to come up with a ranking system here that would be free of bias, but that shouldn’t be the point. I learned a lot from reading the discussions and appreciate the effort necessary to keep the posts going.

No...

There were some serious runs that were concentrated in small pockets of time to even try and pass it off as certain fan bases being more represented than others.

I said

I don’t think too many fans intentionally stuffed the ballots. We’re both right. Do you really think there were large numbers of posters stuffing ballots? I think it was a few idiots, not any entire team’s fanbase.

Totally agree

It was a few select morons. Morons that I’m willing to bet are still virgins.

Lol

Though some here spend so much time following prospects I can’t imagine when they have time to think about women who don’t appear on a computer screen.

To me...

the Max Ramirez slotting is laughable. He’s not going to stick at C and he’s behind 2 better catchers in Salty and Teagarden on the depth chart. He doesn’t even have a place to play. Forget the love and think logically.

What does

being behind Salty and Teagarden have to do with how good of a prospect Max Ramirez is?

That doesn’t have anything to do with it but the fact that he has maybe a 5% chance of sticking at C and if he does, what value his bat brings to the table is largely displaced by the negative value his glove and arm will offset it.

by jfish26101 on Mar 5, 2009 9:34 AM EST up reply actions

Is he does stick at catcher (which some think he will)

and continues to hit like he could, then don’t you think he’ll either be started or traded?

re: Cecil/Poreda

Not sure I get the love here.

I love Cecil as a reliever. Gets grounballs, has some plus power pitches and good command of them. However the guy has a sub-par change and I am always concerned when a pitcher lacks a weapon to deal with hitters of the opposite hitting side of the plate, in this case righties.

Poreda – Saw him pitch in the AFL. he really does not have a pitch beyond his fastball and does not command his slider well and like Cecil has a lot of work to do on his offspeed pitches.

Sumantion – Cecil is probably a releiver and could be a great one actually. Poreda is a reliever, but I think he has a good chance to fizzle.
