Best and Worst IMO
Best Picks:
Gordan Beckham @ 5 – shouldve been in the top 3
Michael Saunders @ 27 – think he can be Grady Sizemore light
Jemile Weeks @ 29 – solid all around, shouldve went top 20
Julio Borbon @ 41 – 40+ SB and great batting eye
Worst Picks:
Derek Holland @ 4 – had one good year in the minors, dont think he will repeat
Martin Perez @ 10 – too young and unproven
Trevor Reckling @ 12 – way too high, myabe shouldve gone undrafted
David Huff @ 17 – marginal SP should not go in the top 20 AL picks
Danny Gutierrez @ 20 – too many KC pitchers ahead of him……

Holland
very much agreed. People hear a lefty hit 98 a few times and they tend to lose their mind.

Well, to defend my pick
- I thought Gordon Beckham was a slightly better player/prospect… but I just have no room for him. I have Pedroia signed for six years and a bunch of UTIL options. I loved Beckham, but he wasnt an ideal fit… and there wasnt value in trading down a couple spots. My league does not have a Middle infield spot. There is really no room at the inn for Gordon Beckham.
- Starting pitchers are insanely shallow in a 10 team AL Head to Head league. Every member of our league can name pretty much every single starting rotation in the AL at any given time during the season. Even the worst starting pitchers have value in this format, because once you have fallen behind in ERA and WHIP you want to have these crappy SPs to throw to try to at least take Ks and Ws. I cant express how shallow it is. People who have played AL Only know what Im talking about. There is literally not a single SP on the waiver wire all season long. In this light, Holland doesnt have to end up being an Ace to represent a nice return.
- In a year when I would be looking to leverage my assets into the best team possible I would probably think “I should trade from strength at 2B…” and what then would I look for when I go to trade him? A high ceiling, near MLB ready stud pitching prospect would probably be what I would be looking for. That being the case… why should I wait a year to try and trade Beckham for next year’s Derek Holland? Then I have to deal with the aggravation of negotiating for a guy like that AND Im not even sure I could get a Derek Holland … NO ONE EVER gives up pitching prospects in our league, never mind guys with high ceilings who can help this season! If I did wait, I might get some extra value back besides a top tier pitching prospect – but not that much more… and certainly not the kind of added value that would be a deal breaker for me if I was getting the guy I wanted.
-Holland is very, very good. His changeup is a plus pitch. Its not just a hard throwing lefty = sexy thing. His fastball has a ton of movement, too – its not just velocity. His slider “flashes plus” as well. I guess the lack of a consistent breaking ball worries me w/regards to his ability to get out LHH… but hell, he’s a LHP. There is risk, in that he sort of came out of nowhere, but there is a mounting pile of evidence that this guy is a stud. Stats and scouting wise.
- This was an appropriate place to draft Holland in the eyes of my other league members. A couple people said I should have gone with one of the Beckhams… but in no scenario does Derek Holland fall below #6. So, I really dont see how its all that much of an overdraft even if youre down on Holland…
- Holland could help me this year by all accounts AND he has a very high ceiling. That’s a nice 1-2 punch.
Really, the only way this burns me is if Gordon Beckham ends up at SS, and even then if Holland becomes 75% of what I think he could Id probably take Holland.

which KC pitchers are ahead of Gutz?

hmmm
Daniel Cortes
Carlos Rosa
Danny Duffy
Mike Montgomery
Tim Melville
are all pretty much ahead of him.
by Summa Slugga on Mar 30, 2009 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hmm
well Cortes and Rosa are ahead of him, but Gutz is closer to the majors than the other three. since he is 22 (or close, not sure his exact birthday) they will almost certainly be willing to move him quicker. plus, Rosa is a reliever and there is a small chance Cortes will be as well.
yea those guys are ranked above him on most lists (definitely not all). but they like Gutz A LOT and he’s likely to get a shot before those latter three.

How'd that Pat guy get 5 first round picks?
Or am I reading this wrong?
Fans are typically idiots.
by The Typical Idiot Fan on Mar 30, 2009 2:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Nope, he did.
Trades. I think he was angling to move up, too, but it didnt pan out. He did get some very good players… Im not sure I would have gone through so much trouble, though. After 5 & 6 (and possibly Ynoa) those arent exactly special players worth moving up for. I think the same quality of player (or close enough) was available well into the 2nd…

As George Bush said,"StrateGERY"
(This is Pat) I had my pick, got 2 first round picks last season prior to the trade deadline, swapped first rounders 2010 for 2009 and bought pick 10 at our draft. I was trying to move up for Smoak but Dave (number 1 pick) wanted 5 & 6. Which at the time was GBecks and Holland. That was before all hell broke loose before the draft. I thought that was giving up way to much value and held on to my picks. Power is much easier to come by the Middle Infielders in our league. For example, I picked up Pena on waivers 2 years ago and picked up Millar and Hinske last year who had above average seasons.
Seeing that I didn’t like anyone in the second round, I stretched for Perez at 10 (he would have went 12 anyway) Perez is regarded by many as the 3rd best left handed prospect behind matusz and holland obviously and assuming Price loses prospect status. His ceiling and make up were to hard to pass up.
I would like to know if anyone would give up 5 & 6 for Smoak and their opinion on the rest on my draft.
Thanks

Trade?
Is this the same league where you wondering about trading up? It looks like you did without giving up the #4.
by FI2 on Mar 30, 2009 4:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yes it is
I trade the #3 and #14 (which was David Cooper) for the #1. Negotiations completely broke down, but then the owner of the #1 pick decides he really liked Matusz – nearly as much as he liked Smoak – so it wasnt that hard to convince him to move down two spots and pick his guy while letting me get Smoak. The #14 was great value for him and he was taking the guy he really wanted anyway… We knew that the owner of the #2 was taking whichever 1B fell, so it worked out great.

Based solely on "Best Player Available"...
Gordon Beckham should have gone higher than #5, somewhere in the 1-2 range.
Guys who went too early IMO:
Westmoreland (Mike must be a Sox fan – or from Rhode Island)
Melville (I would’ve preferred Viciendo, Halman, Cooper, Allen, Reddick, Saunders, Tazawa, Weeks, Chisenhall, Ramirez, Ramos)
Guys who went too late IMO:
Saunders
Tazawa
Ramos
Ramirez
Viciendo

FYI...
I have a similar draft coming up on April 11th, I’ll post the first few rounds for comparison. It’s scary how similar the pool of available players looks. One difference is the size of the league (only 8 vs 10), so there’s less premium placed on starting pitchers.

We are from RI
and Red Sox fans for the most part…. so… yes.
Curious… where would you have him? I see him as Hicks-lite. I see him as definitely draftable… and I dont see him dropping past the 3rd round of a draft like this.
The guy who drafted him didnt have another pick forever and didnt like anyone there all that much. He was desperate to sell the pick or work a deal but it didnt happen. He really wanted Hicks and he thought he was going to get him… when he didnt I think he panicked and then said “f*** it.”
by alskor on Mar 31, 2009 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Definitely Draftable...
but I personally would take Viciendo (I’m a fan), Weeks, Cooper, Halman, Ramirez, Saunders, Chisenhall and Ramos. In that order.
