Fantasy Help: Trade for Smoak OR Draft a Beckham & a Pitcher?

Have to bother the community one more time with my fantasy league! It looks like my draft is going to go 1- Smoak, 2-Hosmer. Would I be crazy to trade the #3 & #4 up for the #1 to take Smoak and the #11?

Or should I just take two of:

  • Gordon Beckham
  • Tim Beckham
  • Brian Matusz
  • Derek Holland.

I know a lot of people answered Smoak as the BPA in my last question... is he worth two of these guys? Or am I losing my perspective? I thought he was going to drop to me and got settled on taking him... is this pre-buyer's remorse or is Smoak worth it??

Poll
Should I take two of Holland, G Beckham, T Beckham, Matusz OR should I trade up for Smoak and take Melville, Hicks, etc...?
Keep your draft picks and take two of Holland/G Beckham/T Beckham/Matusz

Thanks again

I was very appreciative of the great responses to my last question. I value your opinions.

Are there any better options at pick 11?

Meliville, Ynoa, and Hicks are all far away… anyone closer to major-league ready?

Quite possibly...

Ill say this: unfortunately, members of my league read this site and I dont want to give away too much of my draft board before hand. Lets just say a player the quality of those guys will be available. A 4 star on BP, a lower top 100 on BP/BA, a B by Sickels…. that kind of player.

Greg Halman would be another guy who is available (that i wont be taking!)…

In these cases...

I’m generally a fan of quantity. What’s the difference b/w say G. Beckhem and Smoak long-term? Smoak’s production could be found at first a bit more easily than Beckham’s at 2B/SS, and it seems Beckhem will be up sooner. Throw in a Matusz or Holland and I might be more inclined to take both versus risk what wil be available at 11.

Poll seems pretty slanted

I may have just been talked down from the bad trade ledge… thanks. Still considering it, though…

Im giving strong, strong consideration to drafting the two pitchers. They could both help and help soon. I like Tim Beckham, but dont like the idea of waiting four years. If he was an Upton level talent, sure… but Im just not 100% on him – though I do believe he’s underrated. I love Gordon Beckham, but with Pedroia signed to a six year deal… well, what am I going to do with him? He’s a waste at UTIL (a 2B at UTIL isnt exactly smart roster construction, though I could do worse).

So basically, I could sit on Tim Beckham or I could take Gordon Beckham and then trade him… but what would I ask for in a trade? I keep coming back to the fact Id probably ask for a guy like Derek Holland or Brian Matusz! This all leads me to believe I should just take Matusz and Holland in the first place. Theyre the rarest commodity in our league and they both could help very soon, but still have high ceilings. Frankly, if I need to make a trade at some point – Id be better off trying to trade one of the pitchers than I would either Beckham. Pitchers are just worth twice their weight in gold in a ten team AL Only league. If needs arise I can fill pretty much any position with a surplus of pitching. As the old saying goes “You can never have enough pitching.” At the trade deadline guys like this become like “fantasy baseball fun bucks” that I can use to solve any need with any team. Half the teams will be set at 2B while no one is EVER set at SP.

Hmm...

I see some voted for Smoak… but I havent seen any argument made for him. Im curious what the rationale is…

Hmm...Smoak

Instant gratification!
I personally like Matusz to have immediate success but Smoak is equally tempting and a much safer pick so I say take the player you liked most all along and make the trade. I know you’re limiting yourself by missing out on both Matusz and Holland so you just need faith that you can find a similar pitcher later.

I'd go...

G.Beckham and Matusz. I think that G.Beck will play at short with A.Ramirez in CF cause Whitesox CF is bad.

Oh and...

I’d go w/Matusz over Holland because I think he has a higher floor and only a slightly lower cieling than Holland IF AND ONLY IF Holland improves his off speed pitches. So I think Matusz is more likely to reach his potential.

I don’t know what to think about T.Beck because there is a lot less info on him to gauge his talent and actual potential. Also he does not have Hanley potential as someone earlier in the thread has said. I think T.Beck is too much of a wild card to pick in the spot you have/available players (maybe 2 to 3 picks later). I’d pick Ynoa over T.Beck, so that would allow you to trade down to get Ynoa+, if your gonna go with upside and a player so far away.

Has anyone heard anything to this effect?

Or is this just complete speculation. If I knew he had a chance at SS I would take him in a heartbeat. I just totally see in my mind’s eye Ozzie sticking with Alexei no matter what.

Everything I read makes it seem like they are going with Anderson/DeWise in CF. I really see Gordon Beckham shoved over to 2B and sticking there forever…

I agree your plan is better, but Ozzie doesnt always do the smart thing. Swisher in CF, for instance. I cant stand having my fantasy team subject to the whims of the White Sox. Theyll kill you.

I'd say

Go with Gordon and Matsuz

Are you crazy?

This is a six person draft…then a significant drop in talent. I love Smoak also, but I could not justify giving up that much value. There is no way that Smoak could be as valuable as picks 3 & 4 (without one of those guys having a career ending injury). And you can always trade one of them. To many options with the 3 & 4.

I worked out a trade for Smoak!

I gave up the 3rd overall and 14th overall. The 3rd overall was Matusz and the 14th turned out to be David Cooper.

Here were the players I drafted:

Round (Overall)
1 (1) – Justin Smoak TEX
1 (4) – Derek Holland TEX
2 (11) – Tim Melville KC
3 (25) – Hector Rondon CLE
3 (29) – Jemile Weeks OAK
3 (31) – Lonnie Chisenhall CLE
5 (45) – Max Ramirez TEX
5 (58) – William Smith LAA

Im extremely happy with my draft. Tomorrow Id like to post a new fanpost with the entire results of the draft so I can get some good feedback.

A story-book ending

Posting might have been the best thing you could have done….everyone was so fixated on the quantity thing that it knocked down Smoak’s asking price…nice trading IMO…you play poker by any chance?:-)

Well

the guy drafting #1 actually decided he really wanted Matusz… so all I needed to do was give him an excuse to flip the #1 and #3 – because we knew Hosmer was going #2. The guy drafting second was taking a 1B no matter what, so I gave up a lot of value to move up two spots, and the guy who had #1 got a ton of value to move down two spots and take the guy he wanted anyway. It came together very quickly and easily about 10 hours after we had thought we had exhausted all the alternatives.

The guy with #1 turned down #5 and #6, in fact, because he wanted Matusz (or at least Holland I guess). Unknowingly, as you could see from my last post, I had finally come around to taking those two with #3 & 4. So he was looking at taking the two Beckhams – who did go and were a steal at #5 & 6.

I lost the trade from a value perspective but I got my guy… and the guy I had at #14 onmy board I snagged in the 3rd round anyway!
