Dynasty Reserve Roster

For the purposes of this discussion, I don't have any positional needs at the major league level so we're looking at just straight talent.  As well, I have sufficient depth that superstar talent is much more important than guys of the low risk / low ceiling variety.

After the draft, I feel my decision really boils down to the following:

Keep two (No positional concerns):

  • Jose Tabata
  • Michael Almanzar
  • Jaff Decker
  • Ryan Kalish
  • Hank Conger
  • Max Ramirez
  • Daryl Jones
  • Ryan Westmoreland

Cut one:

  • Mat Latos
  • Martin Perez
  • Matt Moore
  • Julio Teheran

For reference (in case you want to know about my depth), I have the following guys coming out of the draft (including guys I carried forward on my reserve roster).  I need to cut this list down to 15:

  • Justin Smoak (1B, TEX)
  • Brett Wallace (3B, STL)
  • Carlos Triunfel (SS, SEA)
  • Wilmer Flores (SS, NYM)
  • Michael Almanzar (3B, BOS)
  • Jason Heyward (OF, ATL)
  • Fernando Martinez (OF, NYM)
  • Jose Tabata (OF, PIT)
  • Ryan Kalish (OF, BOS)
  • Ryan Westmoreland (OF, BOS)
  • Jaff Decker (OF, SD)
  • Hank Conger (C, LAA)
  • Max Ramirez (C/DH, TEX)
  • Daryl Jones (OF, STL)
  • Neftali Feliz (SP, TEX)
  • Chris Tillman (SP, BAL)
  • Michael Ynoa (SP, OAK)
  • Michael Main (SP, TEX)
  • Mat Latos (SP, SD)
  • Martin Perez (SP, TEX)
  • Matt Moore (SP, TB)
  • Julio Teheran (SP, ATL)

Any help, suggestions, ideas appreciated.

id go with

I would keep Westmoreland and Daryl Jones. IMO Westmoreland has the potential to be a rediculous talent, in his prime putting up 35/35 seasons!! Daryl Jones is one of the most underrated/not talked about prospects who im my mind can be a top 20 OF in a couple of years.

I would probably drop Matt Moore from your roster. Hes too young and there are way too many better prospects in that system for him to get a legit chance anytime soon.

Keep: Daryl Jones, Hank Conger

Cut: Julio Teheran

If you want a bat that might make an impact sooner, Max Ramirez should be above Conger. But Conger’s bat is legit, though he might be at first or designated hitter (he won’t stick at catcher). Jones is an obvious choice to keep. As for the pitchers, you want the Latos/Perez/Moore trio, there should be no doubt about that. Teheran has great talent, but the others are much more sure and have had success already, where Teheran had a little bump last year. Moore’s first two PECOTA comps are Trevor Cahill and Tom Glavine. Yes, he’s that good.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

FWIW

I don’t know why you’d even consider cutting Ramirez. Kid can mash, and even if he doesn’t play there regularly, for fantasy purposes he should have eligibility at catcher.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

You mean long term?

Because his value drops for me rather significantly if he moves off Catcher to 1B/DH and he needs a trade out of Texas since he’s behind Salty and Teagarden on the depth chart.

Right now he’d be behind Prince Fielder, Joey Votto, Smoak and possibly Brett Wallace if he has to move. I have similar concerns that make me nervous about Hank Conger.

Thanks for the feedback so far

FWIW, the ranks from John on the hitters are:
Jose Tabata PIT (B+)
Jaff Decker SD (B)
Daryl Jones STL (B)
Ryan Westmoreland BOS (B)
Hank Conger LAA (B)
Max Ramirez TEX (B)
Ryan Kalish BOS (B-)
Michael Almanzar BOS (B-)

The big defensive concerns about the catchers really turn me off on them, since I don’t have any major holes and if they move to 1B they’re really buried. I don’t know why, but the lack of numbers for Westmoreland make me really nervous. Decker intrigues me, and both Kalish and Almanzar are guys I can see making a big jump next year (If Almanzar had stayed in the Rookie Ball and maintained his numbers, people would be drooling over him IMO). Tabata I don’t know what to think. Jones pretty much gets lost in the shuffle, while I know how valuable a 20/20 OF can be, it’s still not something I get really excited about for some reason.

I assume I'm not the only one..

… that keeps Wilmer Flores over any of the guys I listed.
