Doug Deeds
Maybe Twins fans can help me out with this guy. He's 27 years old and in the Cubs organization but came over as a PTBNL in the Craig Monroe deal. He was an accomplished college player at Ohio State and has a career minor league line of .297/.377/.472. He spent last year in AA at age 27 for the Cubs and OPS'd .903. Not a big HR guy but hit 37 doubles. He only has 285 ab's in AAA in his career and did pretty poorly (.710 OPS). He's a corner OF and from what I've read plays decent defense.
John didn't have him in last year's book but had him in the 07 book with a C grade and sleeper status. He draws walks but also strikes out but not at an alarming rate. John said he just needed a chance.
I don't know but for some reason these kind of players have a soft spot in my heart. He has produced at every stop except for his 285 AAA ab's. I'm sure he's thinking what the hell do I have to do to get back to AAA. He's 27 turning 28 so unless he has a Micah Hoffpauir-like season he's probably never going to make it. I wonder if someone is going to give this guy a shot whether it is the Cubs or not who knows.

Yeah, I remember at one time...
Maybe in 2004 or 2005 he was one of our Top Prospects and really looked quite promising, his defense was always in issue, but everyone loved the bat and he looked like RF or 1B would be suffice for us.
However, at least I was quite happy that he was the player we had to give up for Craig Monroe and not on of our better prospects last offseason….
I think he could be a real nice #4-5 type OFer for the Cubs and backup Derek Lee this year maybe….

He'll hopefully help anchor that Iowa lineup this year
But I think teams would probably want to see him do something in AAA before giving him a look. I like Deeds, and considering how sad the AA offense was at times last year, he was a nice sight to see. He was a bit blocked by guys like Hoffpauir and Kroeger, so that’s why he didn’t move on up last year. In regards to the Twins organization, I can’t say much, as I didn’t follow it, but I would say that, for many organizations, a 25 year old that went through as inconsistent a season as he did in AAA would get cut. A 33% K rate with no signs of developing power isn’t going to get anyone fighting for him.
Unless he can take a major step forward, I don’t know if he’ll make the bigs regularly as a bench player, but I could see him as a guy that, for a couple years, gets shuttled back and forth. Considering that our corner OF is set in place, I’m not sure it’ll be with the Cubs.
