Second Base Help
I'm looking for second base help in my upcoming draft. I need a backup second baseman for this year and maybe another young second baseman that can take over in few years and be a starter. As we all know, second base is one of the harder positions to fill. Most guys move from other positions and settle at second base at the major league level. So I was wondering who are your favorite second base prospects for the future and present. Some guys I'm looking at are Daniel Murphy (in our league you need just 10 games at a position to cover for the next year). I also like Jemile Weeks and Gordon Beckham. I'd be willing to draft Beckham and hope he moves to second base. If not, at least I have a solid SS. Who are some of your favorite second base prospects?

Noonan
YES! He is very talented and had a very good 1st half of last season. His second half he started to look a little fatigued, but he provides good attributes all across the board. I may be a little biased as a Giants fan, but I still favor him over many others.
Jose Vallejo and Marcus Lemon would be 2 intersting names to look at later on if you have better options at other postions early.
Neither make the Ranger’s top 20 prospects, but that is not a very fair judge considering how deep their system is.
As an added bonus, Vallejo might actually end up as a SS instead. He was switched to 2B because of Andrus in AA, and moved back to SS this winter. If he can maintain SS with the glove, it is an added bonus.
Vallejo is a high steal guy, Lemon is more of a power guy
Weeks
Seems like J Weeks is underrated due to his brothers woes and injury concerns but he can hit. Gap power , good avg and lots of steals.
+1
I am on the Weeks bandwagon, I think he is going to have a big season in Stockton this year. He probably won’t be making the Majors for a couple years but if you can afford to wait on him I think you could get good value right now.
He seems to have a really advanced approach at the plate, will take a walk and can hit gap to gap. I think he will develop into a very good lead-off hitter.
John Giavotella
Good #‘s right out of college. Seems like he’ll be a good all around player, but not a superstar by any means.
Chris Coghlan
Coghlan can hit, has a bit of pop, and can run. And the Marlins are cheap enough to always be looking to get young guys into the lineup. He’s close to ready now.
Eric Young
And if Eric Young gets a shot to play 2B in Coors, he’ll do a very good impression of his father. From what I read, however, he’s terrible with the glove at second.
Mike Hollimon
Good power, decent speed, hits for a low average and is coming off injury in AAA, but he looks like the logical choice to replace Placido Polanco in Detroit next year.
If you want a guy that’s almost ready, he’s a decent choice.
One of my favorites
Luis Valbuena. His numbers between AA and AAA were very impressive last season. He might get a shot with the Indians this season depending on how things go.
I am like your Dan Aykroyd and biglow would be Jane, the ignorant slut. -Chad
+1...
on Valbuena. Patience, contact, and more power than you’d think. He won’t hit 25hr, but he’ll hit 15 with 35 doubles.
The Indians are a smart organization.
Chris Coghlan
Not a superstar, but I think should be pretty solid. Also definitely near mlb ready.
Dan Dickau - inspiring athletic greatness in unathletic pudgy white men since 2000.
I really like Asdrubal Cabrera
Not just for his name. The guy was rushed early, and unsurprisingly did not hit especially well when he was in AAA at age 20 in 2006. In ’07, he was sent back to AA to be there at age 21, and he showed solid power for a middle-infielder, a good eye, and an oustanding ability to not strike out (42Ks in 368 ABs), giving him a .835 OPS, and then had a .765 OPS in 159 major league ABs at 21. Last year, he did significantly worse (.703) in a full year at the majors at age 22, though his BABIP was a little low in comparison to what he normally hit. He still showed decent power, a good eye, though his strikeouts shot up. For a 23 year old next year, I think he is an excellent bet

Getz
Not sure what context you’re talking about, but Chris Getz seems poised to have an Adam Kennedy-esque career. The lefty bat, good D are enough to make him valuable even with modest hitting stats in a 30-team economy. He’ll probably be a terrible roto player, though – marginal speed, very low power, should sit against tough LHP.
If you are talking roto, Burriss shouldn’t be too bad for a backup 2b, and possibly a keeper type. His D should keep him in the lineup (ahead of Frandsen and Velez), and the SB are nice.
Thanks guys
Thanks for all your input guys. The players who aren’t already on my list (and guys who aren’t already in my league) will go on my draft list.
I really like Weeks, and with the 3 option system my league employs, I think he should have no problem reaching the majors in that time frame.
I really like Cardenas too, but it seems likely he will have to move off of second base.
A funny story about Asdrubal Cabrera. In last years draft, the team picking ahead of me had a need at second base, so he drafted Cabrera. This meant David Price fell to me with the last pick of the first round. Luckiest draft day ever.
