manny rejects offer AGAIN
jerry lewis and dean martin have rejected the dodgers most recent offer. How they can expect a similar offer is beyond me. Spring training has begun, teams have set their budgets and rosters.
If the dodgers continue to negoiate, ANY and all respect they have in the baseball community shall drop to zero.

LOL
Manny/Boras have ALL of the leverage. The Dodgers are cooked without Manny and no acceptable alternatives, and Boras knows it.
Yes, they are bidding against themselves, but THEY ARE STILL BIDDING. Boras is doing a good job for his client here.

How so?
Cooked? They play in the weakest division in baseball. They will be division favorites even with an OF of Kemp/Ethier/Pierre. If Kemp/Ethier take off they are in the same boat they are even with Manny.
I say leave him in the cold and let him come begging when its Memorial Day and no one offers him a thing.

They can probably win the division without him
But I’m guessing the point is to advance beyond that.

I agree Scott
I’d let him sit it out a couple months… If the Dodgers are running away with the west without him [which is certainly possible], then maybe let him sweat another couple months until July, and send him one last offer, at a discounted price. The thing Manny has going for him is that Pierre is terrible

ALL the leverage?
Not really…you are only thinking about this from the Dodgers’ side. What about Manny? Is he willing to sit out the season and lose 25 million? Is he willing to take whatever the next best offer is and forgo millions to play with another team? The Dodgers have a lot of leverage.

"If the dodgers continue to negoiate, ANY and all respect they have in the baseball community shall drop to zero."
What does that mean? They shouldn’t try to sign him anymore? Or they just shouldn’t up their offer anymore?

At some point, yeah...
They’re bidding against themselves at this point. They’ve made some very fair concessions regardless of that. I don’t agree that they’ll lose any/all respect, but at some point you just have to say enough and walk away.

the bidding against themselves is an important point
I agree that they will not loose respect. They have handled this well despite being the only team who wants him. I would get rid of this option, deferred money, and all of that. Give him a 2 year 45 million dollar deal total with incentives.
Offer that today and say everyday we are taking 500k off the base salary for each year of this offer until its signed.
Remember: baseball guys... baseball...

headache
Manny is already being a headache and he’s not even on the team yet. I would cut off all negotiations and run with what they got right now. The NL West is probably the weakest division in baseball and an OF of Kemp/Ethier/Pierre with what they got elsewhere is good enough to still be favorites in that division. If you are a month or so into the season and things look bad, then you could always bring him in to shake things up at a probably reduced price

deaf ears
of course but, uh, dude- Manny is NEGOTIATING HIS PAY FOR THE SEASON. Is that ok with you? Does he have your insignificant little approval to do that?

you are an idiot
this website is for discussing baseball topics and voicing opinions. IS THAT OKAY WITH YOU?
by ScottAZ on Mar 2, 2009 2:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Sure
Its okay with me- Have at it! i get called an idiot often- doesn’t bother me.
I still say that having a say in a ballplayers salary negotiations is an IDIOT opinion but, obviously he’s entitled to it and we are entitled to call each other idiots.
The negotiations go on regardless. Your opinion of me is a tad more meaningful- at least you have a chance of effecting me. having an opinion on manny’s contact talks is just silliness to me. I especially dont understand the bitterness about it- why? Dont you think that is stupid? And exactly HOW is that a BASEBALL opinion really?

doesn't surprise me
How is an opinion? Me calling Manny a “headache” is certainly an opinion or “a belief or conclusion held with confidence but not substantiated by positive knowledge or proof”
As a matter of fact, EVERYTHING posted on this site is, as nature, opinion. Look at the recent threads: “Who is the most talented affiliate”, “What don’t you like about David Price”, etc. Now go back and read the original entry on this post. It is of opininated nature. I am simply responding to his opinion with mine. THAT IS WHAT THIS WEBSITE IS FOR.
I suggest if you do not like this website I suggest you go to a baseball website such as MLB.com that just deals with fact and statistics

Deferred money
The Dodgers failed to mention that the deal was to be paid out over 5 years without interest. Thus, the deal is worth closer to $42 million when you take into account interest. Personally, I am a Scott Boras fan as he is just doing what is best for his clients. I have a hard time feeling sorry for billionaire owners have have on at least two occasions been convicted of collusion.

+1
Boras is a genius most of the time. Not that I dont hate him when his and his client’s interests are opposite that of my favorite team.
The deferred money issue makes the comments by the Dodgers look foolish to me. Its a big issue and a big difference.
McCourt tries to run that team on the cheap, plain and simple. Though I dont claim to understand where Boras is going with this… It only makes sense if a) he thinks the Dodgers will fold or b) he thinks another team will jump up – presumably the Giants.
I also feel a good amount of schaudenfrade towards Manny… scumbag ran his way out of Boston trying to get one more big payday and now it aint gonna happen. At least nothing like what he expected.

My bet
Boras knows what he is doing. The Dodgers will fold because they don’t have a guy that can carry their lineup like Manny. Starting Pierre is suicide if you want to make the playoffs. While Boras may not be loved by the public, if my son was a top prospect you can believe that I would choose Boras to represent him.

Boras over or underrated
Ask Orlando Hudson.
I’d say an extra million or even 5 when you’re worth tens of millions already isn’t worth the headache, but that’s just me.

Hudson
screwed himself waiting for an offer from the Mets or Yankees because (a)Cano wasn’t going anywhere because the Yankees have no reason to move him and (b)Castillo wasn’t going anywhere cause no one wanted him.
by Pelferized on Feb 28, 2009 12:27 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
well
Are we sure what Boras told him? I think bernie madof screwed Hudson out of a Mets offer. :)
Now we hear the Dodgers are pulling their last offer and will start negotiating from scratch.
Which i find kinda funny, since if he said no to $25 or whatever, is gonna say yes to $15? Well, maybe so. He isn’t like yahoo, spurning a microsoft offer at $30+ a share now at $12 and change, or sandisk, which said no thanks to $27 a share from samsung and now at $8 a few months later.
In just a few years, manny’s worth to any baseball team will be zero.

however
Boras is good at what he does. I doubt Manny wants anything less than top dollar, and boras is the right guy for that.
