Top amateurs behind Strasberg

In our AL-only league, for our minor league draft we can draft amateurs or players from Japan/Cuba,etc as long as they have not signed with an NL team.  One they sign with an NL team, we lose them.  Considering that at this point, it would appear Strasburg will go #1 to the Nats, who are other top amateurs?  More specifically, of BA's Top 50 prospects, only five are available - and three are catchers (and I already have Wieters) - and none in the top 25.  (The five available are: CSantana, DHolland, AHicks, JMontero, &JPArencibia.)  What amatuers, or what international players who might come over, would you rank above those five guys?

yu darvish

If you can wait. He has the potential to be an mlb ace.

Yu too young?

How long do we have to wait for Yu to come to MLB? I drafted him last year, but his contract ages. Does he have to be 27? Will he go the Yankees? I only get to keep him if he goes NL.

You should expect at least 4-5 more years before he gets posted.

Among collegians

Grant Green (big, 5-tool SS) and Dustin Ackley (high contact 1b/of with gap power and speed.. maybe able to play CF if he arm is ever healthy again) are you two hitting standouts and, among pitchers, Alex White (athletic kid with a power arm) is the name to know.

That being said, I’m not sure if any of those guys are a better bet – for fantasy draft purposes – than Carlos Santana or Derek Holland

Harvey

Matt Harvey from UNC? Assuming he displays better control I would say he is one of a handful of players who can be #1

2010 Draft

Hunter Morris, who is likely a Top 5 pick in 2010, is someone I’d target in a fantasy league — powerful 1B prospect who hits for average and will be a middle-of-the-order hitter.

Mississippi High School guys

Billy Hamilton SS/CF – 1st round ($1 mil or so) 6-3 175 and quick hands and feet. Will be a true switch hitter. His first game was last night and is spreading fast. Taylorsvillle.

David Renfroe – 1st/2nd round (worth $1 mil or so) – 94mph and an easy 92 (may stick at SS though bc he is such a good athlete. 6-3 195

Ethan Bright – climbing fast bc he hit 93 the other day. Some team will probably give him $300 or so to go ahead and begin playing pro. Who knows really though. True 6-5 and 220.

I have seen them all play this spring and of course, these are just my opinions. I’m not a scout, just an old guy who has seen a lot of baseball. The bottom two are teammates at South Panola.

I'd go with Santana or Montero....

…If you want to play it safe, since they’re already on AL teams.

Is Ryan Westmoreland (OF/Bos) available? He’ll miss the first few months of the season with a shoulder problem, but his potential is reportedly sky high.

Another international player to consider, though it could be a long wait til he’s posted, would be OF Norichika Aoki, who has drawn comparisons to Ichiro.

Bryce Harper

Isn’t eligible but depending on the rules he should probably be in the discussion.

I agree

Harper will be a stud but if you already have Weiters, I don’t know if it is worth waiting. Dustin Ackley just looks like he could hit .320 in the majors right now. Grant Green is a great college SS and will stay there. He has the bat to be in the middle of a lineup. Kentrail Davis is an overlooked hitter in the college ranks. Probably will be drafted in the middle of the 1st round this year, but I think he deserves to be higher than that.
I would take Ackley over any of the guys you posted. Holland could be great, but I prefer hitting due to injury risk.
