BA: Brett Lawrie Moves to 2nd base
http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=2357
This has to hurt his value somewhat compared to playing catcher, though if he can stick in the middle infield, he should have plenty of bat to be a valuable contributor there. John Manuel mentions a scout who made a Dan Uggla comp on Lawrie which seems appropriate, though it remains to be seen if Lawrie will hit as well as Uggla does (and be as much of a butcher in the field).

Lawrie has the bat to hit at any position, according to various reports. I never understood the whole catcher experiment… pre-draft reports said he lacked the “temperament” for it and the Brewers had other promising catchers in the system. 2B is a great spot for him.

Unfortunate
2B is where prospects go to die.

I thought that was Japan?

Lawrie
has one hell of a bat for 2B. Could be like if Ian Stewart consistently played 2B. I think this is the next best place for his bat to play only behind catcher, but this should extend his career.

don't hang your hat
on 2b extending anyones career. Besides catchers, 2b-men have the second worst shelf life among hitters.

uh
WTF?
Hes still like 26, he hasn’t even reached free agency yet. Hes four years removed from college.
What does the success of a 26 year old have to do with the long-term careers of players at that position?

It was just an excuse...
to throw Pedroia’s name out there. Being pertinent to the discussion is overrated.

Exactly
Can we please refrain from mentioning baseball players by name. Particularly if they do not play for Oakland or Texas. After all, this forum is dedicated to baseball discussion.

Uggla is not really a butcher in the field
He is not average at 2b but his fielding is not as bad as it is made out to be. Cano, Kinsler, and Kelly Johnson are clearly worse from what I have seen of them. UZR has him right about +/- 0 plays over the past 3 years. He does not have good range, which I think makes him look quite a bit worse than he actually is, but his positioning and reaction time look good to me( bearing in mind I am not a pro scout of course).

Also on Lawrie
I was never a fan of him at catcher so I think this could be a great move. Moving to 2b should at least make it easier for him to develop his bat and might also reduce the injuriy risks that come with playing catcher.

Smart move
With Lucroy and Salome in the minors, they don’t really need another catching prospect. But they do need a middle infield prospect. Unless Weeks turns a corner he is a weak spot in that line-up, so if Lawrie can come up and hit decent, he will be an improvement.

Lawrie is also at least 3 or 4 years away

Because he was just drafted out of HS?

I think that is an excellent reason for most prospects. Lawrie may be no different, but perhaps he is. I’d say there is almost no chance it takes 4 years.

have you
ever even seen him play?
3-4 years away is a pretty reasonable development time for a HS draftee, even a first rounder.
You’ve got to have to a pretty good argument otherwise to make the case for soon.. something a little smarter that “is not! is too!”
