2009 Prospect Draft Results

I'm posting for those that may have drafts coming up and want to get a feel for how other drafts played out.  Regarding my league, it's a 10 team keeper in it's 5th year.  5x5 roto scoring, 20 major league keepers, 30 major league roster spots.   Prospects don't count towards the keeper list with the drafting team owning their rights until 300 Major League IP or 1200 Major League ABs.   12 round draft.  The draft pool is essentially those who signed deals in '08 ('08 Draftees, International, Japan, etc.) and some undrafted breakout players (ex: Holland and Carlos Santana were available, Morrison and Stanton were drafted last year).

I've included the top 50 picks.  Although you are welcome to comment (on good and bad picks) it's intended more for those with upcoming drafts.  Enjoy!

So...

Were Daryl Jones and Wilmer Flores just not available?

by Hunt3r24 on Feb 20, 2009 3:12 PM EST reply actions

Jones was drafted #53, Flores was selected last year. I picked #2, #6, #12 and #13 (acquired extra picks via trades).

Thank you for your feedback. Via trades, I had 11 of the 50 picks but I didn’t want the post to be neccessarily focused on my draft, just a sample draft for others to view.

Regarding the specific picks, everyone has their own draft board. I wouldn’t (and didn’t) take Viciedo that high, however, if he realizes his 40 HR potential it may prove a savvy selection. I am content with my selection but am also the guy that thought Lambo and Stanton were wasted picks last year and made Sinkbeil and Colten Willems top 25 selections two years ago. Time is the ultimate judge of all drafts.

Also...

Please tell me you weren’t the person that picked 7th.

Hicks

could be the most talented player in that draft class. Think Maybin with plate discipline.

by smoooooth on Feb 20, 2009 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

why do you say that

Have you seen both of them play?

(not asking that critically, just wondering)

by nms on Feb 20, 2009 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

Umm...

I’m not talking about just the first pick. Hick was chosen a little high IMO, considering who was taken after him, but I was referring more to the other picks made.

I'm not Matsuz's biggest fan

but 15th seems a bit low, and behind Ethan Martin even

Really surprised at some of the placement

Posey at 9, Matusz at 15, Weeks at 35 and Friedrich at 42 all seem like steals to me. Hicks at 7 seems like a complete overreach. I can maybe understand Viciedo at 4 if someone needs help in the OF almost immediately, but it still seems like a major reach, and I don’t think he has the same kind of upside as the other guys in the top 20, not to mention that he still might not move that fast.

This probably looks pretty typical of one of those drafts where half the people know what they’re doing and the other half just know the team they follow closely and thus overrate that team’s players.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Matusz

Yeh gotta agree with OldProspects here and say Matusz is a little low, he should be a top 10 pick imo. Hosmer @ 10 will be the steal of this draft in 3 years…….

Sox Draft

How many Sox fans are in your league? Kelly and Westmoreland were serious reaches at those spots.

by seabass on Feb 21, 2009 1:51 AM EST reply actions

I am also in this league and it is the New England Fantasy Baseball League but I dont think we have any Sox fans. But I think our league has the opinion that the Sox FO knows what they are doing.

I dont think Westmoreland was that much of a reach

He was the best athlete in the 08 draft.

There’s a lot to like about Kelly, too.

I really like SharpeShooters picks

Getting Brett Hunter with the final pick of the 12th round is a terrific gamble. Hector Rondon, Kelven Hererra, Michael Pineda in the late rounds is pretty damn good too. That group with Eric Hosmer and Martin Perez might give him the best draft, especially impressive considering he had the last pick in the draft and only traded for one extra pick.

Dirty Weaponry getting Chris Coghlan in the 9th round is pretty nice. Otherwise the draft seems pretty conventional.

Best Draft: Boys of Summer easily. Those first four picks are all monsters (Alvarez, Smoak, Holland, Wallace). JV Batboys, Sharpe Shooters and Durham Bulls all did well, too, but for impact guys Its no question Boys of Summer. Probably a little unfair because he had the most picks seemingly, but I like a lot of his picks a lot, too. The verdict could be different depending on what he did to move up and get those picks. Some of the mid round picks didnt seem worth moving up for…

Worst Draft: War Paint or Supreme Clientele. I dont like G Beckham or Viciendo there at all(and I consider myself higher on Gordo than most people)… and the rest of their picks are pretty questionable. These two made a lot of poor picks… not sure what the game plan was there.

Seems like a lot of guys went for lesser known sleeper types… for no reason in particular. For instance, Kyle Lobstein in round 6… over Hector Rondon… …why? Can anyone give me a scouting, stat or otherwise argument for this? Someone above said Westmoreland was a reach, but the pick directly before him was Yorman Rodriguez! Wes Freeman in the 8th round when Pineda was still there…? Dont get those picks… A lot of rounds it seems like a few teams were locked in on some lesser known guys and reached for them. I actually checked again to make sure it was a 5×5 league…
