Carlos Santana out for 2-3 months
Looks like Santana is having some hand/wrist surgery and could come into spring training with some questions.
How do you guys see this affecting his prospect status? I know the hamate is a pretty big deal when it comes to power and such, but does its removal have the same effect as breaking it? Also, the end of the article talks about everyones favorite DL player, Adam Miller, going under the knife yet again.

Santana will be ready to for Spring Training, but likely won’t make the major league club. That’s not really a big surprise though, because he was ticketed to go to Columbus.
Adam Miller’s story is a sad one. As an Indians fan I have longed for his arrival in the majors ever since 04/05, but now looks like he might never play baseball again. Sad stuff.
+1!
Hello everyone,
Yes, Adam Miller’s story is a very sad one indeed. I can still remember us debating about the Millers (Adam and Andrew), their strengths and weaknesses, etc. It’s been like this for a while now, especially after the “tip-of-the-finger” injury, but Adam making the MLs has been a longshot for a while now, unfortunately.
I wish him the best of luck in whatever he chooses to do – whether he wishes to give it another try to make it back or choose to do something else.
Take care and have a great day!
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Very sad about Miller
Will Carroll thought people were far overstating his injury last time (of which this is basically a recurrence), and denied it could be “career-threatenting.” Might still be the same story, but this long away from the game has got to be a real bad sign.
Geez
wrist injuries are never good for hitters. I guess I’d leave his prospect status unchanged until such time he shows that this is an issue and it should be changed.
Re: Hamate
I doubt they would have removed if it hadnt broken. It probably snapped. Its pretty common. It does tend to tap power for ~ a year, but a) Ive never seen studies on it, b) think that’s just common knowledge/anecdotal and c) with health, every person is different. For instance, Pedroia had his removed before his rookie season IIRC, and I expected a drop in power. Nope. Huge leap forward.
Its not a major thing, but the timing of this one will probably mess up his season prep some… and hand injuries are always an annoyance with batters, so it shouldnt surprise anyone if it does hinder him.
Hamate
It varies from player to player. Many times it’s about being comfortable with the swing. Those that lose power are generally more common. However, a lot of players play through some pain for quite awhile before going under the knife, and when they come back, even unknown to us, the general public, the reason their power is better is that they genuinely feel better and their natural swing is more pain-free.
I’d say Will Carroll knows how to stereotype injury recoveries better than all of us, but yeah, this type of thing goes player to player more than some other injuries.
I guess we can give Josh Thole the edge in power now.

You obviously haven't seen Thole's VWL numbers.
One word: SICK.

Santana won't even come close to sniffing that now.
Lou Marson is the long-term answer in CLE.
This situation is similar to when Bledsoe (Santana) went down due to injury and Brady (Marson) stepped in with the team never looking back.

You’re talking absolutely crazy right now. Its just a hamate bone and it doesnt affect his prospect status. LOTS of MLBers have had it done. It concerns me just a teensy bit more than if he had appendicitis. There is basically zero chance of there being any long term issues. He might have some lingering discomfort for a year sapping a bit of his power, absolute worst case. Find a guy who had a hamate out and had long term issues, I dare you. I dont recall it ever happening.
Regardless of Santana’s situation, Thole is a career back up. Santana could drop a bat out of his hand and hit it harder than Thole.
Speaking of Marson, Marson = Thole. Theyre like the same player, and neither is half the baseball player Santana is.
OK
Reading it again, I came off as more of a dick than I like to, but I strongly disagree with the premise of your argument.
This literally could not be much more different from that situation
I was about to go on an entire rant that showed how, but I’m frankly too lazy
You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--

Id still give Santana the edge in power even before the stitches come out.
Maybe even while the doctor is still operating.
Hamate Bone...
injuries don’t sap power long-term. Dewey’s analysis here is just laughable. Almost as laughable as his man-crush on Josh Thole.
Recent hamate bone fracture victims:
Ryan Zimmerman, 2007. ISO the year before the fracture: .192. The year after surgery (when he also suffered a shoulder injury): .159. ISO 2 years after the surgery: .233.
Dustin Pedroia, 2007: Played the last month of the season with a Hamate bone fracture! 2007 ISO: .125. ISO during the month he played through the fracture: .132. ISO in 2008: .167. 2009: .151.
Pedro Alvarez, 2008. 2007 ISO: .298, swinging a metal bat against college competition. 2008: missed most of the season. 2009 ISO between A+/AA (wood bats, MUCH better competition): .247.
Jose Tabata, 2007: ISO the year before breaking Hamate bone: .085. ISO the year after: .111. year after that: .113.
There’s a reason the hamate bone is referred to as the appendix of baseball. Once the guy’s healthy and his swing is back to normal, he’s fine. Santana has 4 months before the season starts. If this injury saps his power at all, the effects should be completely gone by June at the latest (and they could end up being completely nonexistent).
