Rangers offer Feliz and Smoak for Josh Johnson

From MLBTRADERUMORS:

"The Rangers must be confident in their chances next year. Both T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com andRichard Durrett of ESPNDallas.com are reporting that the team offered Justin Smoak andNeftali Feliz to the Marlins for Josh Johnson.

"If that offer didn't get it done, then the Marlins truly are committed to starting the season with their 25-year-old aceJoe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post says the Marlins are still open to an extension with Johnson."

If I were the Marlins, I would jump at this deal to land two of the game's finest prospects.  What would you do?  Remember, the Marlins do have Logan Morrison and Gaby Sanchez (just mentioning him) so they could think Smoak duplicates what they already have.  But to not accept 6 years of cost control for both Feliz and Smoak for 2 years of the arbitration-eligible Johnson seems a little crazy to me.

Your thoughts...

Very skeptical of this.

Doesnt make any sense to me, though Josh Johnson is very, very good. I just can’t believe or understand why the Rangers would offer that for him, and can’t believe or understand why the Marlins would allegedly turn that down…

One of the best 1B/hitting prospects in the game and a special arm – and both MLB ready. No way in hell do I turn that down if Im the Fish. No way I offer that if Im the Rangers.

I don't know that there are more than a handful of players in all of baseball...

…that you would turn down that offer in order to keep.

I am a but unsure as to who…Pujols, Mauer, Hanley, Lincecum, Greinke….

Longoria, Wright, Braun, Tulowitzki, J.Upton, Kershaw, Felix, Wainwright, Lester, Jimenez

re

I don’t think Tulo or Jiminez fit in that list, IMO.

RE: Disagree

MLB proven players with term friendly long term deals don’t get traded for two unproven prospects.

Ubaldo is like 25 and is 10th in the NL with a 3.36 FIP and Tulo plays a premium position and put up almost a 400 wOBA at SS. That is Hanely territory. And he is generally considered to be a plus defender.

I'd do it

for a lot of those guys. Jimenez is really good but I’d do it for him in a heartbeat. Would efinitely do it for Wainwright (if I knew I could move Smoak in another deal for a similar guy), Kershaw, Braun, Tulo…I may have to give this more thought, but at first blush I don’t see why the hell not.

Feliz

Jimenez is what the Rangers hope Feliz becomes. A thrower with plus stuff who becomes a dominate pitcher. Maybe the Rockies would do that because Helton is old, but I doubt it given Jimenez’s contract.

While I think Feliz is becoming that type of player (he made good strides in the pen last year) but the bust rate (chances he gets hurt/ends up in the pen) is far too high to be ignored.

Agree to disagree, but I believe there is an obvious bias towards taking the prospects on this site.

true enough

There is the prospect bias, and Jimenez is awfully good. I guess I am assuming feliz can be a starter. Ubaldo does have the highest mph on his FB of any SP, per fangraphs. I just think Smoak and the fewer years tips the balance.

I think Jeter is on the list

not b/c of skill, but b/c of the shit fit that would be thrown by every crying yankee. It might look like this:

If true

Surprised from the Marlins. I too doubt the truth in it. It’s a good offer in general. For maybe the cheapest team in baseball it’s probably too good to pass up.

Team official now denying it

This seemed like BS from the start. Didn’t pass the sniff test. I was shocked the Rangers beat writer even reported it. Then again, it was a Rangers beat writer (different one) who left Pedroia completely off his MVP ballot last year, so… yeah… maybe those Texan reporters should just stick to football.

Wow

Making up stuff is easy to do on the internet. This would be a no-brainer for the Marlins and a fireable action in Texas.

by faketeams on Dec 9, 2009 2:21 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

definitely

i was really surprised to see this, there’s no way the marlins don’t make that.

"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

to be fair

it was two beat reporters (well, actually, I’m not sure what Richard Durrett is … but both were with respected organizations). I gotta think someone said something to them … maybe it was taken out of context, maybe it was a hypothetical. I just don’t believe that two separate reporters would report the same thing without having heard something from someone, even if it was taken out of context or misunderstood in some fashion.

Well

Could very well be a deliberate leak… those are far more common than we generally think, IMHO. BUT, every indication is the Fish really, truly don’t plan on moving him… so what would be the point? Really makes no sense to me at all…

by alskor on Dec 9, 2009 1:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ludicrous

First thought that popped in my head. Johnson is really good, but wow.

by wobatus on Dec 9, 2009 2:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

championship teams need an ace

Feliz is awesome but probably far from being a true ace. Josh Johnson is an ace who could vault the rangers past the angels. Justin Smoak is good, but not a deal breaking talent on a team with as much hitting as the rangers. This is a deal fantasy players would never make. However this is the move championship mlb teams have to make.

by svigen on Dec 9, 2009 7:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yes, Smoak and Feliz both have some question marks, but they are two of the best talents in the minors AND theyre MLB ready or very close, and both with a chance to be special, impact players.

…and again, this one has been pretty much disproved. Obviously, we can’t claim to know for sure, but all indications are it never happened.

by alskor on Dec 9, 2009 7:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Disproven

(Sorry for the grammar police, but I could not resist)

Quite honestly, this deal would make zero sense for either team. The Rangers are giving up too much for Johnson, and the Marlins already have their 1B of the future in Morrison (whom I doubt could move to LF). This seems like one of those rumors that was started by someone that did not look at the big picture.
