The 3 way Trade

As a Tiger fan I'm not sure how to react.  I liked Granderson as the face of the franchise and loved the fact he was the only decent position player we developed for what seemed like an eternity.  I can't say I hate the arms, and Edwin Jackson was Matt Joyce at this time last year.  Considering we were having a sale.  Getting a solid arm, a potential arm, and are CF in Jackson, this wasn't as bad as it could have been.....

as a dback fan...

i dislike the trade.

we bought high and sold low on Scherzer, and picked up a spare yankee part in Kennedy.

Our 2007 and 2008 #1 draft picks and all we could get is a guy that has bounced around and put up terrible numbers outside of wins and a yankee miscast?

Good Point

I really don’t like it from the D-Backs point of view….I was blinded at it from a Tiger fan?Yankee hater set of glasses. They must love Edwin Jackson.

My take

It’s alright for the Tigers. It rests on Scherzer sticking as a solid starter, unless you think AJax is going to suddenly take off. If Scherzer is able to stick as a good starter, a TOR type, then it’s fine. I think Schlereth and Coke will both have their uses, although I’m not sold the former is a closer.

I don’t get it for the D-backs, unless they have some serious concerns on Scherzer (and even then, I don’t think they got enough value) Scherzer, on the surface, is better and cheaper than Jackson. I guess they could really love Ian Kennedy …

As for the Yankees, a steal. Kennedy, IMO, is an end of the rotation arm who might be able to get lucky one year and look like a passable mid-rotation starter. I am not a big fan of AJax, and Coke’s a LOOGY. Even if AJax pans out better than most expect as of now, Granderson helps you now and the next few years, and he comes at a very affordable cost.

A+ for the Yankees, B for the Tigers, a C for the D-Backs, unless they know something we don’t.

This is exactly how I feel about it

There must have been some sort of deadline on it. The total package for the Tigers is pretty good, but its because they got overpaid for Edwin Jackson and underpaid on Granderson. If they had more time, I’m pretty sure they could have done better for Granderson and gotten the D’Backs a Kennedy clone, but if Scherzer was leaving the table if the deal wasn’t completed soon, this was probably about as good as anything else the Tigers were going to get in total for the two.

I wonder....

If the D-Backs hadn’t reviewed the stats since mid-summer… That would explain why they wanted Edwin Jackson so much.

by Alex Trebek on Dec 8, 2009 3:46 PM EST reply actions

I think this might be a deal by Ariz to mitigate risk

if they think Sherzer is unlikely to stick as a starter due to his mechanics and potential injury, they got a better deal…

If they view him as a potential back of the bullpen arm instead of a SP, then the addition of 2 SP fills existing holes instead of creating new holes

yanks/tigers

I love it for the Yankees, even though I think Granderson is overrated and I see him as the kind of player who loses it quickly and ends up out of baseball in his mid-30s. He’ll be a quality player for probably three more years and extend the Yankees’ window.

I like it a lot for the Tigers, even though I don’t like Austin Jackson as much as they seem to. Scherzer is a great pickup. If you look at the two halves of their deal, it’s one push and one steal, IMO.

I fail to see how this deal helps the Diamondbacks even a little.

how is...

phil coke and Ajax for granderson a push????

i agree that the tigers made themselves better… burt it rides more on the fact that they got cheaper, younger, and the scherzer/schlereth side is enough to counteract the loss on the granderson side….

by PHGold09 on Dec 8, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

The Tigers did NOT make themselves better at all

They downgraded a bit and saved a ton of money in doing so. This was not a “get better” trade, make no mistake about it. Edwin Jackson > Scherzer and Granderson >>> A Jax. They got a couple of nice bullpen arms, but that doesnt make up for what they lost.

by alskor on Dec 8, 2009 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

Edwin Jackson is not > Scherzer....

Jackson projects to be league average going forward. Scherzer already put up a better year than Jackson last year (Jackson’s best year) in only his first full season. And of course, Scherzer has far more years of team control.

"We were shit, pathetic," Guillen growled early in spring training. "We hit too many home runs."

by lenscrafters on Dec 8, 2009 6:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I suppose you're right about Scherzer > Jackson

Although, given the switch in leagues being worth about half a run AND considering Scherzer’s injury questions its pretty close.

Still, Austin Jackson is a gigantic downgrade from Granderson, even if you think Scherzer is much better than Edwin Jackson…

by alskor on Dec 8, 2009 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

What is your argument for Edwin Jackson being better than Scherzer? In 2009 Scherzer has a much better K rate, similar BB rate, better xFIP and better tRA. Plus there’s the issue of 2 more years of team control of Jackson vs. 5 more years of team control over Scherzer.

by jibs on Dec 8, 2009 6:30 PM EST up reply actions

i agree that granderson is much better than A jax

but considering the conracts, they are getting better value out of the 4 players they received who will all receive league minimum salaries, than what jackson and granderson would be giving them…

if they weren’t slashing payroll, i’d expect them to add a strong bat at a corner position with the money they saved… the economy doesnt allow for this, but the price they sold jackson at stil makes them better…. and scherzer’s out preformed jackson based on xFIP (which i believe normalizes for park although im not sure about league)… either way i still think scherzer has upside where we’ve seen what jackson can be (awesome for short spurts like early 08)

Ok, I know the D-backs lose

but I’ll try to make an arguement for them (and I’ll post this on both threads). Some view Scherzer as a closer. Perhaps the Dbacks felt this way, and perhaps they know something about Scherzer we don’t. Scherleth I like, but the Diamondbacks seem to have found a good closer in Gutierez. The move isn’t terrible for them. They bought extremely low on Kennedy, who had a fluke injury, and was arm raped by the yankees a la Chamberlain and Hughes. Perhaps the D-backs think they can develop him into a 3rd starter type. Also, let’s not forget, the D-backs could be pretty good next year in a rather weak division. Webb, Haren, Jackson is one of the best top 3 of a rotation when all are healthy. They also have upcoming stars in Upton, Reynolds, etc. It’s a team built on speculation (will Webb be healthy, will Upton take the next step, will Reynolds be able to put up a good avg, will Chris Young stop looking like everyone’s worst fear of Mike Stanton, etc), but this move could work out for them. That being said, the Tigers really found a way to get some great parts, and they’re shaping up to have a terrifying bulpen with coke, scherleth, perry, et al.

I look at it like this...

Scherzer > Jackson
Scherleth > Kennedy

Dbacks got bitch slapped on this one

Whats the word on Ian Kennedy?

I remember him being a pretty hot prospect, but he’s not even on Sickels Top 10 Yankees prospect list from 2009

He used up his prospect eligibility in 2008

He had a bit of a lost year in 2009, missed almost the entire season due to an aneurysm in his throwing arm that required surgery. Returned at the very end of the season, and then had a pretty solid showing in the AFL.

Good trade for Detroit

I like the trade for the Yankees, and sort of understand it for the Diamondbacks (but don’t like it), but this is a very nice trade for Detroit. Scherzer is a great power arm, and at healthy worst, can close. Shlereth is a nice power arm for the pen, Coke is a nice specialist, and while Jackson is overrated at times, he should be a starting caliber CF for cheap and reach the majors soon. That’s a lot to get for Granderson, who is very good but can’t hit lefties, and Jackson, who’s had one good half season.

When did the D'Backs hire...

Bill Bavasi? Terrible trade for Arizona. Jackson over achieved in the first half of ’09 and revealed his true self in the back half. Ian Kennedy is a AAAA pitcher. Yuck!
