Last year's rookies, top community prospects for future performance # 22
After getting close these past several rounds, Drew Stubbs wins round 21 with 20% of the vote. Andrew Bailey comes in second, again, this time with 16% of the vote. Here is where we are so far:
1. Matt Wieters, C Baltimore
2. Tommy Hanson, P Atlanta
3. Andrew McCutchen, of Pittsburgh
4. Brett Anderson P Oakland
5 Gordon Beckham, 3b CHW
6. Rick Porcello, P Detroit.
7.Elvis Andrus, SS Texas
8. Colby Rasmus, of St. Louis
9. David Price, P Tampa Bay
10. Travis Snider, of Toronto
11. Dexter Fowler, of Colorado
12. Chris Tillman, p Baltimore
13t. Matt Latos, p San Diego
13t Derek Holland, p Texas
15. Cameron Maybin, of Florida
16t Chris Coghlan, of Florida
16t Trevor Cahill, P Oakland
18 Matt Laporta of/1b Cleveland
19 Kyle Blanks, of San Diego
20 Nolan Reimold, of Baltimore
21 Drew Stubbs, of Cincinatti
Garret Jones draws less than 5% of the vote and is temporarily dropped. Clayton Richard gets a bit of support but not enough to get up to 3% and, so, is permanently dropped from this poll. This round the minimum to avoid being permanently dropped increases to 4%;
Luis Valbuena, Gerardo Parra and Tommy Hunter return for another round and Brett Gardner gets his first shot at the poll.
temporarily dropped from the poll (percentage and round in parens) Brad Bergesen 1% (18), Casey McGehee 1% (18), Randy Wells 0% (18). Everth Cabrera 3% (19), Cliiff Pennington 1% (19), Marc Rzepcynski 3% (20), Garret Jones 3% (21)
permanently dropped from the poll (percentage and round in parens) Gio Gonzalez, 1% (20), Clayton Richard 2% (21)
With just three rounds left after this one, I am listing players who are under consideration to be added for the first time in these last few rounds. Among hitters I am thinking of Taylor Teagarden who isn't great but still might be a decent starting catcher. If I were to go much deeper I would probably have to take a look at Chris Getz, Mitch Maier, Micah Hoffpauir, Trevor Crowe or Randy Ruiz. If you think one of those guys deserves to get on more than Teagarden make your case.
Among starting pitchers I am thinking of David Hernandez, and Brian Duensing. Kawakami pitched well, but is 34 which makes him a "nonstarter" so to speak, so, realistically Swarzak, Mazarro and Jordan Zimmerman are probably next if not Hernandez or Duensing. if you like any of these guys, please discuss below.
Among relievers I am thinking of Sipp, Mijares, Medlen, and Gregerson. I haven't added a reliever in a number of rounds but intend to do so probably this next round, so if you have a preference please discuss below as it is probably going to be just one of them.
At this point I am probably going to be able to add only 4-5 more guys for the first time altogether, so I really want to make sure to add guys with the best possible chance of snagging some votes. I especially want to end the poll with the strongest possible list, as I believe that everyone who hasn't been eliminated and got at least 5% in the last round, can be considered an "honorable mention" of sorts.

Jordan Zimmerman
Long term, he still looks like he can be a nice second starter after Strasburg. I’d only put Niemann ahead of him, of this current crop.
wow
completely forgot about him
would take him over more than a few of the guys already on the list.
baseball rules.
Yup, I completely forgot about him too. Seems like ages ago that he got hurt.
I’ll vote for Romero this round, but I’ll vote for Zimmerman as soon as he makes it onto the poll. In fact, I agree with doublestix: if I’d remembered, I would probably have slotted him at 15, or at least no lower than 16.
before his injury
i would have slotted him at 6 right after beckham… but now cause of his injury… i would probably put him 16 right after maybin…
everyone totally forgot about this guy..
Thanks for mentioning Zimmermann
We in Natstown don’t have much to hang our hats on to but Jordan’s one of them, eh…
Hmm
Went Romero (#2-#3 SP), but there’s a good case to be made for Bailey, Gamel (maybe) and Zimmerman.
President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.
Also
Tester for Ryan Perry? He’s got a lot of potential as a relief arm (possible closer material).
President, Vice President and Secretary of the Casey Crosby Fanclub.
Valbuena
Wow, I’m the first person to vote for him? I gotta think, based on his minor league track record, that the discipline will come back. A bit of a butcher defensively last year, but I think he can be a guy with an average glove that has some power and shows some discipline.
Zimmerman,
yeah, I just noticed him still out there. I will add him next round
Sean West and other comments
I haven’t seen him mentioned at all. Fringe top-100 lefty prospect coming into 2009 with similar stats across the board as Cecil. The largest difference is that West had a 0.9 WAR in 103 IP whereas Cecil only had a 0.4 WAR in 93 IP.
Although Kawakami may be too old to for this list, is Jake Fox eligible at 27?
Zimmermann was definitely forgotten and should’ve been slotted a few rounds ago.
Bring back Rzep soon?
isn't much soon left...
if we are only going 25. Among those who went previously I am thinking of Bergesen, Mcgehee and Wells can wait, having only drawn minimal support previously. That means I might just add Cabrera and Rzep from that group this coming round. Among new guys, clearly I’m adding Zimmerman. Does anyone like Perry or West significantly enough better than Bailey/Bard who have continued to draw enough support to stay on but not enough to win a round? Is there anyone else listed above or not who could draw significant support if added to the mix?
As for Fox, eligible at 27, sure. The only question is what they are going to do the rest of their career. For a 34 year old the answer is almost certainly: “Not as much or as well as they have done so far.” While 27 is old for a rookie there are more than a few cases of players who have won and held for 5 years or more a regular spot starting from 27. Not sure that he would draw all that much support here, though.
my list
1. Wieters
2. Hanson
3. Price
4. Beckham
5. Fowler
6. Cutch
7. Anderson
8. Rasmus
9. Maybin
10. Porcello
11. Andrus
12. LaPorta
13. Latos
14. Tillman
15. Coghlan
16. Snider
17. Holland
18. Stubbs
19. Cahill
20. Romero
21. Reimold
22. Gio
23. Borbon
24. Blanks
25. Niemann
Hernandez needs some work before I would consider him having a good shot as a SP. If he can get that slider back to the quality it had been in the minors, I would feel more comfortable with him. He has a tremendous fastball, but I would slot him in as a back end pen arm. In order for him to be a SP, he needs to make the slider more consistent, improve the changeup more, work on his command and keep the ball down in the zone rather than up.
McDonald
James McDonald has yet to be mentioned. He would probably come in somewhere in the 30’s for me, definitely would like to see him on a poll before you stoop to putting on Micah Hoff
I still can see how Bard/Bailey are getting this many votes.
I think both can be good solid relievers, but that’s what they are. I think their impact isnt going to be anywhere near as much as most of the players on this list.
