San Diego Padres Farm System Discussion
I'm working on the Orioles. The next team after them is the San Diego Padres. Use this thread to discuss the Padres organization.

This system has really
come a long ways in a short time. The additions of so many high upside players, in Tate, Williams, Sampson, and even Jerry Sullivan make the 2009 draft a crucial one to the Padres system. Under Grady Fuson, they really concentrated on limiting risk, and therefore upside, in previous drafts. Jorge Reyes is another guy who signed for over slot money as a 17th rounder who projects to have 2 solid pitches and excelled on the Cape last summer. Even after graduating Latos, the system still has some good pitching depth in Luebke, Castro, and Pelzer, who throws a very heavy FB that sits in the mid 90s with a plus slider as well….
Oops
@BenBadler Donavan Tate (Padres), 3rd overall pick in ’09 draft, has surgery to repair broken jaw from ATV accident http://bit.ly/72iBNf

I'm sure management is thrilled
Stupid punk.
Heh
@BenBadler Tate had been rehabbing from a sports hernia. Said he was on a “do nothing assignment” from the Padres. Woops http://bit.ly/8YFpfO

I agree
Stupid…Is it that tough to sit around and play PS3 for a couple months.

Edinson Rincon
Really interested to see your thoughts on him. Hard to find info on the guy but read quotes about his high ceiling from scouts.
Rymer Liriano and Vincent Belnome are also interesting names for me. But, Rincon is definitely the better prospect.
Luebke will be an interesting one to see John’s take since I don’t think he even made the Minor League Handbook last year.

Luebke
He led team USA in pitching and had a pretty good first half in the Cal League.

He's a big kid...
And I think that’s the main concern, that he’s so big he may have to move off of 3B. I’m not sure it matters though, his bat and plate approach are both excellent.
Probably my favorite system in the game
I’d rank it a lot differently than BA did, though.
1.) Jeff Dacker
2.) James Darnell
3.) Simon Castro
4.) Logan Forsythe
5.) Donovan Tate
6.) Aaron Poreda
7.) Wynn Pelzer
8.) Edinson Rincon
9.) Jonathan Galvez
10.) Everett Williams
Just my $0.02. I love this system’s hitters. For reference, had they been eligible, I’d have Latos at #1A and Blanks behind Decker and Latos.

Jeff Dacker?
God I’m an idiot. Jaff Decker is obviously what I meant. :-)

It's funny
That BA ranks Luebke so high, but a projectable guy like Galvez didn’t make their list. I wonder if his defense is giving them pause. It just seems counter to what BA has done with guys in the past (like their famous Hunter over Kouzmanoff for their 2007 #1 Padres prospect).

Check out their AZL list report on Galvez
They think he projects to be a glorified utlityman.

That seems like quite a bat for a utilityman
But, hey, what do I know.

I assume John will do a top 20 list
You care to give your opinion on the additional 10?

The minorleagueball readership seems down on Tate
and up on the Jaff.

It's hard to be up on Tate at the moment
There’s so little to go on and the injuries don’t help matters.

not really surprising
The community is generally really big on guys who show big numbers regardless of defensive value and very low on toolsy guys who haven’t played yet.
To be honest I think the anti-Tate sentiment is rather overblown. He might need a bit of time to put things together, but his upside is huge and his contact tool (his biggest supposed question) is underrated IMO. I’d be more concerned about his ability to hit for power in the short term.
Was I really that far down on Tate?
For me, he’s still a Top 100 prospect (Like I said, I love Darnell/Forsythe).
But Tate scares me.

If that's really the case
Then people will love Rincon. That guy has a monster bat but no defense. Tate still has the upside but Evertt Williams looks like he’s going to be a hitter. I think he was a steal.

Steve Garrison
Coming off shoulder surgery but still young.
Just in time for knee surgery
That really hurts

I like...
Mitch Canham’s prospects. He for sure has the most upside within the Padres organization at the catcher spot.
Pelzer
He’s a guy I’m always interested in hearing about. He’s one of my favorite under-the-radar pitchers from a statistical perspective, with his very good strikeout rate, solid control, and excellent ground ball rate. He had a great year in the California league. I’d like to hear more about Wynn outside of what I can see on a stat sheet.
John,
Is it just me or are you following a very similar top prospects schedule as BA?
He has done some of the same
But he’s done the Angels and Twins, which are still on BA’s to-do list if I’m not mistaken.

padres
I scheduled the Padres weeks ago…remember I took a poll about it.
I alternate leagues also…I’ve done the Royals, Angels, and Twins and BA hasn’t gotten to the AL yet at all.
Adys Portillo + Keyvius Sampson
Two very young pitchers that could vault up the rankings in the next year or two. Will be very interested to see how these two develop.
Portillo had a rough go of it in the AZL this year, but the 17-yo Venezuelan held his own in his first pro year with a solid 7.5 K/9. Does a C+ grade sound about right?
It's really too bad
Latos eeked out of his rookie status (by 2/3 IP) this year. Having him pegged at the top of the rankings would look awfully nice.
Jaff Decker
Surprised to see him listed. I thought his Y-Wing was shot down over Yavin.
My son is Madison Bumgarner, the Spacebat of pitching prospects. My other son is a Porsche.
Jaff Decker
Gets no respect. His defense is pretty good but people just discredit him because he looks out of shape.
