New York Yankees Organization Discussion

I am currently working on the Chicago Cubs. The next team on the list is the New York Yankees, followed by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Use this thread to discuss Yankees prospects, focusing particularly on any sleepers you like.

John

What grade would Arodys Vizcaino have received?

by Jay212033 on Dec 29, 2009 9:06 AM EST reply actions

sleepers

I like Wilkin de la Rosa and Jairo Heredia. Not a deep system so not too many sleepers. Heredia and de la Rosa should be in the 10-15 range but they have potential to be in the top 5 next year.

And if Brackman is in the top 10 I will not take the list seriously.

Jose Ramirez

Jose Ramirez’s pitching numbers in Rookie ball show definite sleeper potential.

by epconde on Dec 29, 2009 10:46 AM EST reply actions

he seems like he throws hard

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1f4B5m31c9c&feature=related

he stayed 94~96mph on the video and they did call out the velocity outcome (in spanish) once when he hit 95mph. i don’t know about his breaking stuff though… well that was before his gcl outburst so he might have improved some

the hitter, Reymond Nunez, had a great year in DSL in ’09

definitely

Rey Nunez and Yeicok Calderon are both great hitters, but I don’t think John was ranking the DSL as much

DSL

With very rare exceptions I don’t pay much attention to DSL players.

by John Sickels on Dec 29, 2009 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

Sleepers

Sean Black, Jose A. Ramirez, and Kyle Higashioka are some HM guys. Maybe Ramirez top 20 even. I rank Corban Joseph and David Adams pretty highly. Adam Warren looks okay as well as a very early HM.

Three guys who I have seen ranked very highly were Bryan Mitchell (who I LOVE), Gary Sanchez, and sometimes Neil Medchill. Although the three have some nice potential, I see them as too far off at the moment. I would hope to see Mitchell as an HM for sure and Sanchez as a late teens option. Medchill is someone I can see a late numbered ranking, but I disagree. Kelvin de Leon is another guy right at the back end, but I have him right at 20.

Please don’t underate George Kontos due to injury

by sjkqw on Dec 29, 2009 2:19 PM EST reply actions

Kontos

Pretty marginal to begin with and now he’s gonna be 25 and coming off Tommy John surgery – and who even knows when he’ll be back. Middle of next year?

Mitchell is higher than a HM for me.

by alskor on Dec 29, 2009 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

Seems to me the Mitchell getting talked up is DJ, not Bryan

3 star prospect in BP.

Not much performance to go on on Bryan yet. Not that you shouldn’t love him or anything…

by nyyfaninlaaland on Dec 29, 2009 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

Bryan Mitchell is interesting

He got 800K to sign and here’s his BA write-up:

Righthanders Bryan Mitchell and Chris Overman entered the spring as the top prep pitchers in the state before Daniel Tuttle passed them with his explosive stuff out of the bullpen. Mitchell is 6-foot-2, 175 pounds, and has some life on his downhill fastball, which can touch 90-91 mph. He also spins a power slider and throws his fastball for strikes. Concerns about his future projection, as well as a commitment to North Carolina could cause him to fall out of the first 10 rounds.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 29, 2009 4:17 PM EST up reply actions

And he got the nod for best secondary pitch in the draft report card:
RHP Bryan Mitchell (16), who signed for $800,000, has a power curveball that scrapes the low 80s. He throws his 88-92 fastball downhill and could have two plus pitches soon.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 29, 2009 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

bryan is good

but no pro experience and not really a top top round pick. I don’t think he belongs in the top 20 yet. He is definitely a high HM.

DJ Mitchell should be top 20. Bryan has been talked up because of his bonus, but top 20 is too high for me. I have seen people put him top 10 (not BP)

by sjkqw on Dec 29, 2009 4:20 PM EST up reply actions

FWIW Torre Tyson, the Charleston manager caught DJ Mitchell for a bullpen session

and said that the kid’s sinker had basically as much movement ad a LHP slider.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

CoJo put up a very sexy line this year in Charleston (Low-A)

.300 /.381/.418. Yeah the SLG was nothing to write home about but you looooove to see plate discipline like that from a kid in his first taste of long season ball.

question

alskor, what is your thought on Adam Warren?

by lard of the dance on Dec 29, 2009 2:45 PM EST reply actions

Dont know much about him

Wasnt he kind of viewed as an overdraft? Just looking now at his numbers and he looked pretty good this year.

by alskor on Dec 29, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

i do not about him being an overdraft

but all i remember about his stock at the draft is that he was a senior and his stuff saw an upgrade during the senior season. (88~92mph, touched 94) at the time, many considered him as a safe college arm. he did really well for SI Yankees and the reporst say that his fastball velocity went up (90~94mph mostly touching 96) and i did read an article where Adam Warren said it was simply that he had grown more comfortable with his mechanics.

i’m curious on how he’ll do in his first full season

Interview

I interviewed Warren, we talked about his approach and repertoire. He is definitely a good, smart kid too:

McAllister ...

McAllister is a soft tossing control pitcher whom I like a lot. I saw him pitch in Hickory a few years ago, he didn’t get it over 90 (hung in the 87-89 range) but he was very adept at putting the ball where it was tough for hitters to make clean contact.

by 2883 on Dec 29, 2009 3:29 PM EST reply actions

I've got a short list of guys I'm curious about what folks think

AAA – Nova and R. Sanchez. The former got p/u in Rule 5 around time of last year’s lists.
also Russo. And did Curtis’ AFL add any sense he might make it as a 4th OF?

AA – Or there this season… E. Nunez, B. Laird, H. Noesi, and the perenially hurt C. Garcia, or Alan Horne, who might be aged out.

A – is there reality for D. Phelps, or Venditte? Will Betances hang on – injury may knock him off. SS Pirela or Abe Almonte, anything there. And what of MIA Brad Suttle?

Below and ’09 draftees: J. Paredes, D. Mack, E. Sosa, N. Turley, Cotham, Stoneburner….

Can we put a fork in Carmen Angelini? Sorry if you read this, dude.

May lack quality, so made up in quantity.

by nyyfaninlaaland on Dec 29, 2009 3:46 PM EST reply actions

One things NYY is particularly adept at

is having a number of quality RP’s at each level.

These guys, except at top of the system, will largely be ignored, and probably should. But they do seem to work on this, where some other orgs just throw the castoffs there largely as roster fill.

To my mind this is 1 of the big reasons for the Yanks teams having excellent win pcts. They have lots of good quality, but likely never more than minors players, if only due to the numbers of guys that are in the system for up to 6 years. Perhaps the best depth beyond possible useability going. Is that a good thing? Probably a meaningless thing.

by nyyfaninlaaland on Dec 29, 2009 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry to keep trumping self

but by “possible useability” I obviously mean’t in the majors. A whole lot of possible C and/or C+ players.

by nyyfaninlaaland on Dec 29, 2009 4:05 PM EST up reply actions

why?

i don’t think he will make it if that is what you mean, but he is eligible right

by sjkqw on Dec 29, 2009 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

I think he may not qualify for prospect status due to service time with Pitt

31 IP over 2 seasons, but the time up is what may take him out of consideration.

Not that he should be a top ten guy. Likely a C or C+ – will he even make John’s book is my question I guess.

by nyyfaninlaaland on Dec 29, 2009 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

most of those are done

Horne is just outside top 40. Gracia is barely top 100 system. Betances is barely top 50 system. Angelini is done.

Paredes is probably outside, but he seems like a nice player. I’d like to see him in full season first.

Almonte finally improved so that could be good news of his advancement to high A. Pirela was very good and is also very young.

I really liked Curtis after the AFL. I think he is a back end HM who could make the majors in September.

by sjkqw on Dec 29, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

John tends to downgrade the injured

so neither Betances or Garcia making it wouldn’t be a shock.

But I’d think Betances is still top 50 easy, and if Garcia can ever actually heal he might still be a Top 20 talent. Big if though.

Very curious to see how Nova, Laird, Noesi, Phelps, and Russo are viewed, plus who the low level sleepers are for John and those here. I was slightly surprised Bleich showed so well in BA and BP, but sometimes I think both are so “recent high draft pick” focused – not completely unjustified mind you – that helps guys like him.

by nyyfaninlaaland on Dec 29, 2009 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

Angelini

we could put a fork , but it’ll probably go right through him just like when he swing at pitches or field groundballs my god did he look overmatched this year. the jokes on River ave blues’ daily prospect update was that it wouldn’t be a minor league report without seeing a Kei Igawa HR allowed or a Angelini error.

by RollingWave on Dec 30, 2009 4:07 AM EST up reply actions

Eduardo Nunez

A lot of people love him, but I don’t see much improvement there. I saw a spike in BABIP and not much else. Plus, he’s not a competent defender.

DeAngelo Mack

Put up some good numbers in his 1st taste of pro ball after having a big season at South Carolina. Could be a poor man’s version of a five tool player (above ave in all catagories, standout in none) and also displays good plate discipline. May be sort of a tweener (not enough speed for CF), but did hit some monster bombs in college (see the youtube clip) so maybe he’ll have enough power to man a corner. If not, he could be a very good 4th OFer

one of my fave OFers in the system

I agree entirely with that analysis. I like him in LF for the future, but he played decent RF when I saw him.

by sjkqw on Dec 29, 2009 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

yes

Mack is a real intrigue.

by RollingWave on Dec 30, 2009 4:08 AM EST up reply actions

well

it’s hard to say who’s a "sleeper " in this system when basically everyone else other than Montero / Romine / Mcallister are basically "sleepers " (aka haven’t done enough to really warrent high prospect status)

by RollingWave on Dec 30, 2009 4:25 AM EST reply actions

Manny Banuelos

Signed out of Mexico. The 19 yr old lefty put up a nice 2.76 FIP and a 1.07 WHIP in 108 innings in A ball. 8.67 K/9 and a 3.71 k/BB. Sits at about 89-91 with the FB with a very good changeup and curveball. Due to start in A+ as a 19 yr old next year. Love this kid.

Strikeouts are boring- Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

Neil Medchill

Kid put up a monster season in the NYPL .278 /.350/.551 with 14 homeruns. The lanky lefty is probably going to skip low A and start 2010 in Tampa.

by CasanovaWong on Dec 30, 2009 12:11 PM EST reply actions

short list

I think it’s going to be quite a challenge to get 20. I mean, the Yanks aren’t known for developing their prospects, they sent their best one to the Tigers not too long ago, Dunn moved recently…I just think it could be tough.

I like McAllister, Heredia, and Montero…but after that it’ll be interesting to see how John puts it together. I guess I’d be interested in seeing what John thinks of Romine and Brackman.

Whats more interesting is whats going on with some guys that used to be on the radar but have fallen off. Is Kei Igawa done? What about Humberto Sanchez and Ian Kennedy?
