Community Prospect List #4

With 43% of the runoff vote after 20% in the regular poll, Buster Posey wins the honor of becoming the community's #3 prospect!

Domonic Brown and Carlos Santana will be added to the poll.

Suggest testers if you want, however, I'm not planning on putting any just yet, due to the fact the top bunch are mostly agreed upon.

1. Jason Heyward - 51%

2. Stephen Strasburg - 76%

130 AB, 50 IP Limits

There will be a Baseball Cube link to all the entries.

maybe we should leave these open longer than 8 hrs

500 votes is hardly the entire commuity (or any reasonable subset of it…) Buster Posey may be closer to the bigs which could make him more valuable than any of the other prospects but 500 votes is just simply early returns.

500 is more than anyone got last year

Check out last year’s polls. Usually was 200-300.

this years polls arent any better

238 in the #3 and 130 in the run off. You don’t need to fly thru these. I’d rather have it slowed down and be a meaningful sample rather than just hurry thru it haphazardly and have it look like a Jonathon Mayo list.

It Was Looking Rather Obvious

Would you see it going any differently?

The runoff should have been left open longer

with 100 votes to go making up a 13 vote lead

isn’t insurmountable. the raw #’s were 56-43. So yes I could totally see it swinging.

by 2883 on Dec 26, 2009 11:16 AM EST up reply actions

Pretty much the only way that would have swung

would have been with some major ballot stuffing by one of the losers. With 3 legitimate candidates, one of those guys was going to need about 50% of the remaining votes to go their way after picking up just 30% well into the poll.

Stick with your gut cwhit

Last year we went to between 200-300, unless somebody was obviously running away with it, and everything worked out fine. In fact, it was the first time the list got done in 2 years and the first time the list made it to 150 prospects. You will never make everyone happy but you are doing good so far.

Good point.

Montero, Posey and Santana are all excellent prospects, but I think we’ve encountered some prospectors groupthink. Montero has a higher offensive ceiling than Santana, but I think he’ll be a 1B/DH instead of C. Posey is a better defender than Santana right now, but Santana has the tools to narrow the gap or become Posey’s equal defensively. Santana already has a cannon for an arm and is a good blocker, but he just moved to catcher two years ago and needs to improve his English to become a better game caller. Additionally Santana has much greater power potential than Posey. All things considered I’m a little confused why Santana seems to be the consensus number 3 and not right up there with Montero and Posey.

Matusz

Just like his pitch set, command and he knows how to pitch, probably a homer pick

Stanton is close.

by Jordan Tuwiner on Dec 26, 2009 12:35 AM EST reply actions

really?

I voted him on at #3, behind the Obvious Twins. Only flaw is that his fastball velocity isn’t plus-plus, which is REALLY nitpicking.

by mrkupe on Dec 26, 2009 12:59 AM EST up reply actions

Was leaning Montero

at the last second, I thought Stanton’s bat potential was greater and might play a slightly more valuable defensive position. I could go either way, and could probably ponder cases for Santana, Matusz, maybe Feliz, maybe Jennings.

by toonsterwu on Dec 26, 2009 2:38 AM EST reply actions

the only area Montero is greater than Stanton

contact ability.

that’s it, so I’ve gotta go with Stanton, who I think surpasses Montero in all other aspects…

power
speed
arm/def
upside/ceiling

Stanton/Montero

I would say that Montero has the better hit tool that is going to lead to both a higher average and OBP as a result of needing fewer walks to reach a higher OBP, while still having plenty of power to boot.

The biggest thing for me though is pretty simple. Montero has a much, much higher floor with a very high, although less than Stanton type ceiling. Just seems to be a much safer pick without much downgrade in upside if he were on a team where he had a chance to actually play 1B.

by dougdirt on Dec 26, 2009 5:32 AM EST up reply actions

Right but

Stanton’s lack of contact ability could be enough to keep him from ever being anything in the major leagues. Its a huge, huge issue. There is no such hole in Montero’s game.

by nixa37 on Dec 26, 2009 10:24 AM EST up reply actions

Stanton is getting way undervalued already

He has a skill that no other minor league player has. Its going to make him valuable no matter what, and an absolute monster if he reaches his upside. I understand Montero looks like a better all around hitter, but with the positional adjustments, and the floor Stanton does have based on his raw power alone, he gets the nod IMO.

Huh?

Stanton has a skill that no other minor league player has? I get that his raw power is what it is, incredible….. but when you say skill that says current power. He slugged .455 in 341 PA at AA with an iso of .224. Jesus Montero slugged .539 at the same level at the same age, albeit in half as much time with an iso of .222, or basically the exact same power currently.

As for the floor with Stanton…. I just want to toss a name out there that fits pretty well for age/body size and power. Adam Dunn. When Dunn was 20/21 he was the same size as Stanton is now, considered a strong defender, had better speed than Stanton and better numbers (of course Dunn was a year older too) and as we know has power than can match up with what Stanton may do one day. Time hasn’t exactly been the best friend to his body, and for a while now he has been slow and a very negative defender.

Just suggesting that well, Stanton may be all athletic currently, but he is going to get bigger and when he does is his defense going to hold up? If not, is his floor really all that high considering he does have problems making contact?

by dougdirt on Dec 26, 2009 5:44 AM EST up reply actions

Thanks for doing this

Why not list Posey in the 1-2-3, instead of just listing Heyward & Strasburg? Any reason to not be listing the guy who just got voted for in the ranking?

by gogotabata on Dec 26, 2009 11:05 AM EST reply actions

I Have Him Listed At The Top

If it makes it easier, I can list him twice, once with the announcement, and once on the list.

Additionally

We have one open spot for the draft I’m doing. We’re in the second round, and it’s your pick. You have Madison Bumgarner, and are picking again in three picks after this. or so.
Please respond to this if you want to take over this team.

You really need to stop assuming "it wont change much"

This thing is going far too fast, in my opinion. It seems like we’re at a rate of about 2 a day.

Lots of polls on here have changed at the last minute or gone far one way and then come back another. Set a defined time or vote threshold and stick to it. You never know what will happen.

by alskor on Dec 26, 2009 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

People live in different time zones.

People work different hours. You have to at least give every one a chance to see it. I dont think a poll should last less than 24 hours.

by alskor on Dec 26, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with Alskor. I would let it a poll go 24 hours

unless it’s clearly a landslide by the votes AND comments.

BTW Thanks for putting the time in to do this

Not that I care about this list (it never comes out looking very good) but you did 3 polls and started the runoff before I even saw the list had started.

by jfish26101 on Dec 26, 2009 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

No, I dont.

But then I wasnt a particular fan of the way it was done last year, either.

I would go 24 hours. You really get funny results from the west coast if you don’t.

This should not be interpreted as ungratefulness. Its very nice of you to run this. I just think its going way, way too fast and it could skew the results.

by alskor on Dec 26, 2009 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

Okay Thanks For The Tips

I’ll let it go 24 hours, especially once it becomes a lot more cloudy.
Just as of now, there really wasn’t any certain way it could have gone. Posey, Montero, and Stanton were a tight group, same with the first two.
