chick

Chick is marginal I agree. The other guys were consdiered but I didn’t put them on for variouis reasons….Caseres production was marginal for a cal league first baseman. Pedroza went down to the MWL after playing in the cal league in ’08, plus his strikeout rate is extremely high. Erickson looks interesting and i might go with him over chick.

Caseras

jumped from the rookie league to the Cal League. The Dodgers don’t usually do that and he struggled mightily against LHP but was impressive at times. .926 OPS against RHP. Nothing great but if we are talking one of the last guys to put a grade on , I think he should be there.

leaving room for the exceptions.

I agree. I’d like to see Rubby de la Rosa, Gorman Erickson, Travis Schlichting. Are newly-acquired players like Jon Link and John Ely eligible too?

I think you could take off Travis Chick, maybe Francisco Felix (wasn’t he rule 5 eligible?), Matt Magill or Geison Aguasviva.

You could also consider Justin Miller or Brent Leach if he’s eligible.

by dtung on Dec 23, 2009 5:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree with some of that

but I’d really like Aquasviva to stay, he’s one of the best lefites in the system.

I forgot about the Pierre trade. Adding Link and Ely to the list, cutting Chick, brings us to 40 which is the maximum.

i like

I like Felix. He stays on.

Magill is cuttable if there is someone you really want. Don’t like Justin Miller. de la rosa too far away.

Magill is from my high school, you can't cut him!

lol

I think he’s got some good talent, though.

thats pretty cool...

It was like the LHP Tyler Skaggs who I wanted the Dodgers to draft(went to the Angels). He went to my HS’s rival and owned our varsity team

I’d cut Magill for Erickson if you give me a good reason.

akins

I want to write about Akins.

by John Sickels on Dec 23, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Erickson

My argument would be that Erickson has some offensive potential and a decent chance at sticking at catcher. My info on Magill is a little out of date but last i checked he has avg. at best velocity and had a K/9 rate a tick less than 7. On the flip side, Magill is almost two years younger and played at the same level.

personally

I think that Gallagher should be ahead of Schlichting because Gallagher played a whole season hurt, even though he sucked. Schlichting is a reliever… Id be suprised if he ever gets a legit shot in our pen.. too many people that are better than him, and they are established.

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Dec 23, 2009 6:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well I agree

that Gallagher should be on the list but i think you are wrong about Schlichting. He might have made the team this year if he hadn’t been hurt and I feel comfortable in saying he’ll for sure make the major leagues which is more that what can be said for some of these prospects.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 23, 2009 6:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I dont mind having Schlichting be on the list, but if he is on instead of Gallagher, I think that is wrong. Coming into the year, Gallagher was considered to potenitally be the 3B of the future. He hurt his shoulder, but played through it.

What’s Schlichting going to be for the Dodgers? Yea, I know he could have been in the majors this season, but in a pen that includes Trancosso, Belisario, Kuo, Broxton, and Sherrill, how many key chances will he get? He may be a good prospect, but, IMO, he has little value to the Dodgers.

Reading a few Dodger blogs, they seem to have the same general feeling about Schlichting, average to above average pen guy. Going into last season, Gallagher was considered by some to be one season away from being an elite prospect… see my problem?

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Dec 23, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ok

OK, so if you want both Gallagher and Schlicthing on the list, who do I cut to make room?

by John Sickels on Dec 23, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

from your newest list...

damn, this is tough. If we keep both Gallagher and Schlichting, cut May. He s a backup at best. Except for possibly being the backup for next season(if we dont resign Ausmus), he has no value.

Or, we could litterally cut Schlichting for Gallagher. I guess its a crap shoot because Austin had a bad season and was hurt, while Schlichting was productive… I am thinking long term, where I think Gallagher will have more value.

lucas may?

he will not be getting cut frlom this list..

by matthewmafa on Dec 23, 2009 11:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I honestly have never like May… which is part of the reason I included him….

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Dec 24, 2009 2:22 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Lucas May

made some huge strides this year. Had a solid AA season even with the injury, then had an even better World Cup, and capped it off with good showing in the AFL. I’d like to hear if his defense is improving like DeJon told us and John should be able to enlighten us based on how he looked in the AFL.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

not a fan of St. Clair

he used to be an elite talent but now he sounds like just a guy with mediocre stuff. he’s put up nice numbers but he’s now 23 and hasn’t pitched above low-A.

roberto feliciano...

i dont know if hes a top 40 prospect yet.. but he made it to A ball as a 18 year old lefty…

seems like a sleeper to me.. drafted in the 24th round in 2008.. watch out for him..

by matthewmafa on Dec 23, 2009 10:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Can anyone tell me about Blake Smith? Drafted early last year, but I never really heard anything about him….

i can tell you one thing

he is not among the dodgers top 40 prospects..

by matthewmafa on Dec 23, 2009 10:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

smith

I feel like i have to include him due to draft position.

by John Sickels on Dec 23, 2009 10:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

he was an overdraft

the only reason possible to put him on this top 40 list is draft position.. and he was a huge over draft so if he was a 3rd round pick, would you put him in?

by matthewmafa on Dec 23, 2009 11:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd cut him

we know he struggled and you won’t really be able to grade him until we see what he can do with a winter of rest and a fresh start. Of course you not going to be able to say much about Gallagher either since he lost the year to the shoulder problems.

Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen

by Phil Gurnee on Dec 23, 2009 11:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He was terrible all year when he played

But he’s still got potential as either a pitcher or hitter, so I haven’t given up on him yet.

by Ivdown on Dec 24, 2009 1:48 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Two way player

but the Dodgers were impressed with his power and put him in the outfield. His first tour with the wood bat was a disaster so right now he’s looking like a wasted pick given he was a college player but maybe he just had trouble adjusting to the professional life. Happens sometimes. Could even be converted back to a pitcher if he continues the Kyle Russell whiff machine approach.

Thoughts on J.T. Wise? Both May & Delmonico have warts aplenty . . .

armando Zerpa

recent rule 5 pick up…

is he not top 40 or did everyone forget about him??

suprised nobody mentioned him…

i would add him in favor of cole st clair.. both lefties.. zerpa has more velocity and in A ball this year he went 45 inning 19 hits 51 Ks 14 walks… absoluty dominante.. 0.73 WHIp

on the other hand.. st clair went only 36 inning the whole year with a 1.18 whip at age 22 in A ball with 36 innings 30 hits 45 Ks and 13 walks..

Zerpa is the better prospect..

by matthewmafa on Dec 24, 2009 11:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Zerpa

because he is a rule 5 pick, dont we need to keep him on the MLB 25 man roster? And he pitched in A ball last year? IMO, seems like we will need to offer him back, and his old team would be stupid not to take him back, IMO

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Dec 25, 2009 12:36 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

yea

but my point was is it even worth counting him because either we have to keep an A ball pitcher on the 25 man roster or give him back. And, because he did well in A ball, his team will probably take him back… I doubt we have him very long, he doesnt seem MLB ready and a team like the Dodgers need every 25 man spot..

by lakersdodgersyankees4life on Dec 25, 2009 2:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

oops

I kinda used ‘IMO’ to many times….

Robert

I’m a little surprised not much attention is being paid to Robert Boothe. He hit 96mph last year and averaged 12.4k/9. They changed his motion which helped his control issues and he threw well in Advance Instruction League after the season. He has been called for early camp this year. Something else wrong?
