If they don't have the best top 5 in baseball,

I’d bet they have the best top 15. Some of the lower level pitchers that just missed the list could have some serious helium. As a Rays fan, it’s great to have so many arms at sso many levels. Hopefully some of the position prospects taken last year step up this season.

by rglass44 on Dec 21, 2009 1:39 PM EST reply actions

Probably go Cleveland for top 15, too...

Then either Tampa or Boston. Texas still in the discussion as well.

by alskor on Dec 21, 2009 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with alskor below

Texas or maybe Cleveland for the top 5. I also maybe like Baltimore more than I should. And I like Colorado right alongside this top 5 as well.

A better question though, might be whether anyone has a better #6 prospect than Tim Beckham.

by acerimusdux on Dec 22, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

Best top 5...

Not with Hellickson as the 2nd best prospect… (still very good though – one of the top 5 top 5’s, if you will). I do like Hellickson a lot – and Jennings might be the best prospect in the AL for me, but still… need a little higher ceiling from my #2 there. Brignac isnt exactly a world beater, either. Just a real solid player (underrated even). Very, very good top 5. Not the best.

Give me Cleveland instead – Santana, Chisenhall, White, Knapp, Rondon. Or definitely Texas with Smoak, Perez, Feliz, Scheppers, Font?(Who cares who is fifth).

by alskor on Dec 21, 2009 1:40 PM EST reply actions

How many top 100s for the Rays farm?

I’d say probably 5 to 6. Brignac gets underrated because his bigegst weakness turned into his biggest skill.

by rglass44 on Dec 21, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

I would guess 6 for BP

I dont care what BA does. John probably won’t do 6 for them – but I still am holding out a lot of hope for Tim Beckham’s tools to turn around. I really liked him last year this time… not willing to significantly drop him yet.

by alskor on Dec 21, 2009 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

Me either.

His batting numbers were actually pretty good for age/level/position. The biggest scare (to me at least) is his ballooning bottom. If he gets that under control and stays up the middle his bat will carry (I think at least).

by rglass44 on Dec 21, 2009 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

I mean really...

Kind of being facetious here… but if you give me my choice of any 5 Rays prospects (or any team, really) or Smoak, Perez, Feliz, Scheppers (& no fifth prospect)… Im really inclined to go with the four Texas guys. Which is pretty messed up… am I off my rocker, there?

by alskor on Dec 21, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

Neither am I

But… man, what upside if he is. If he isnt, he’s still projects as an elite reliever, no? Mostly my statement above is on my love for the top 3 Rangers guy. Lets look at it this way, though, take those 3 out and lets compare Scheppers to the rest. Scheppers’ upside might be higher than anybody else in the Rays system. Kind of crazy. Yes, lots of risk, but Im getting 3 top notch guys with him…

by alskor on Dec 21, 2009 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

anybody else besides Jennings I meant

Scheppers upside.

Well, actually I meant besides Jennings/Hellickson/Davis, but I would expand it now to everyone buy Jennings.

by alskor on Dec 21, 2009 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

The first 3 are definitely elite

Scheppers may have a higher ceiling than Moore, but I think his odds of hitting it are much longer (thanks to the shoulder issues). I think Scheppers is moved quickly as a reliever and may even contribute by the end of the year if the Rangers are in the AL West race.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 21, 2009 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I mean Moore is a big projectable lefty thats averaged over 12 k/9 at every level. What more could you ask for?

by rglass44 on Dec 21, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

Would you trade K's for command?

I don’t have Moore’s O-Swing%, but my guess is Sally League hitters helped a bit on the K rate given his high BB rate. While it was in line with prior season rates, that was rookie ball, where absurdly high K-rates are a bit more common. Does this sustain moving to A+, or perhaps more significantly, AA?

Almost seems to be somewhat following McGee’s career arc, prior to the latter’s injury bump, though I haven’t looked in detail at the batted ball type numbers.

Guess I lean towards Sickels’ feeling on lower level performance being less meaningful than upper, and there has to be some wait and see. Not like guys are jumping to the bigs from the Sally regularly. And I know no one’s suggesting that could happen. It’s about being some years away, and that things can change. Still, he looks to have a bright future at this point.

hmmm

I like DJ more than Smoak, and the Hellickson/Perez battle is interesting. I really see Davis being ahead of Feliz though. I just don’t know if Feliz is ever a dominant starter.

by rglass44 on Dec 21, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

BA has Davis...

as their closer in 2013. Feliz would be a better reliever and I think he will end up being a dominant starter. I like Smoak more than DJ because he has an elite bat. No one in the AL is even comparable to his bat. The Hellickson/Perez battle is not interesting either. Perez is clearly much better than Hellickson and I like Hellickson.

by joegonzo on Dec 21, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

Smoak has an elite bat at 1B.

DJ has a a tantalyzing skillset. Elite defender in CF that is an on-base machine that steals a ton of bases. He also could end up hitting 20 HRs a year (COULD). Last year DJ was as good or better with the bat at the same levels at the same age.

Davis is penciled into the closer spot because of the glut of pitching, not because of concerns about him being a starter.

by rglass44 on Dec 21, 2009 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

Jake McGee

I know the reasons not to put him higher, but I think I would’ve put him ahead of Colome personally. Actually, I think Barnese should be a tad higher, but that’s me.

by toonsterwu on Dec 21, 2009 1:52 PM EST reply actions

Yeah...

what’s with the low placement of Barnese. For me, he would be #6 or #7 I think…

by alskor on Dec 21, 2009 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

His K-rate wasn't great after returning.

But he’s the same age as Colome pitching at a higher level. I’d slot him ahead of McGee at this point.

by rglass44 on Dec 21, 2009 1:56 PM EST up reply actions

Whereas I wouldn't have McGee in my top 12 even

I would have too...

Maybe not Torres, close call.

by alskor on Dec 22, 2009 12:11 AM EST up reply actions

+1 kinda

Love lobstein, and it says something when he doesn’t make the top 10, but I’m also a big fan of Torres.

Davis

Anyone else find it interesting that Davis isn’t listed on the ’12 lineup? Would you rather have him or Neimann? I thought Davis had a higher upside.

by drwmsu1 on Dec 21, 2009 8:36 PM EST reply actions

Oops

See now he’s listed as the closer. I’d like to see him in the rotation, we’ll see.

by drwmsu1 on Dec 21, 2009 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

yeah my bad on that one

for some reason if goes down and doesnt lineup with the others.. i tried to fix it but it isnt working

by matthewmafa on Dec 21, 2009 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

I like the list for the most part

I agree with some that Lobstein should be in at 10 and I would drop Mcgee out and bump Torres and Barnese up. While not having much offensive talent in the system (outside Jennings, Brignac, and Beckham) the Rays have a ton of depth with their pitching and it is spread out throughout the system. This will allow the Rays to adjust the future offensively next season in the draft and through potential trades (Garza, Crawford, Upton). Also don’t forget the Rays also have Matt Joyce and Sean Rodriguez two guys who aren’t prospect eligible but still decent offensive guys and young.

Jennings, Hellickson, Davis, Brignac, Beckham, Moore > Your top 3

Luke Bailey

He should definitely be in the conversation of top offensive talents in the system.

Are you seriously saying that your top 6 are greater than my top 3? I bet my top 6 is better than your top 3, too. How is that hard to do?
