Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Last year's rookies, top community prospects for future performance #20

After losing the three way runoff for round 16 and being beaten out by Laporta in round 18, Kyle Blanks is not to be denied in round 19, easily besting the field with 22% of the vote, ahead of four different guys who received between 11% and 14% of the vote.  Here is where we are so far:

1. Matt Wieters, C Baltimore

2. Tommy Hanson, P Atlanta

3. Andrew McCutchen, of Pittsburgh

4. Brett Anderson P Oakland

5 Gordon Beckham, 3b CHW

6. Rick Porcello, P Detroit.

7.Elvis Andrus, SS Texas

8. Colby Rasmus, of St. Louis

9. David Price, P Tampa Bay

10. Travis Snider, of Toronto

11.  Dexter Fowler, of Colorado

12. Chris Tillman, p Baltimore

13t. Matt Latos, p San Diego

13t  Derek Holland, p Texas

15. Cameron Maybin, of Florida

16t Chris Coghlan, of Florida

16t Trevor Cahill, P Oakland

18 Matt Laporta of/1b Cleveland

19 Kyle Blanks, of San Diego

Star-divide

Everth Cabrera and Cliff Pennington drew less than 5% of the vote last round and are temporarily dropped from the poll.  No one is permanently dropped as both got at least 1% of the vote.  In order to avoid being permanently dropped this round, a player needs to receive at least 2% of the vote.

Marc Rzpecynski is returned for another chance this round, and we will give Gio Gonzalez and Brett Cecil their first shot.

temporarily dropped from the poll (percentage and round in parens) Jeff Neimann 2% (16) Luis Valbuena 0% (16), Gerardo Parra 0% (16), Julio Borbon 1% (16), Tommy Hunter 2% (18), Brad Bergesen 1% (18), Casey McGehee 1% (18), Randy Wells 0% (18). Everth Cabrera 3% (19), Cliiff Pennington 1% (19)

With just five rounds left after this one, I am going to list players who are under consideration to be added in these last few rounds. Among hitters I am thinking of Garret Jones, Brett Gardner, and Taylor Teagarden.   Amng pitchers I am thinking of Clayton Richard, Scott Richmond, David Hernandez and Brian Duensing among starters and Aceves, Sipp, Mijares, and Medlen among relievers.  I am going to be able to get to most, but probably not all of these guys in the next five rounds so if you like one of these guys, or someone not on this list and want them to be added, please mention them below.

Reimold

I’ve got more confidence in his bat than Stubbs or Gamel, I am not ready to vote for Bailey or Bard here yet, and I am either in a wait and see mode on the remaining starters (Romero) or just I don’t like them that much, either for upside, floor, or consistency to vote for them over Reimold.

He gets knocked because of his supposedly suspect D

But I think he will improve. He is fast and athletic and he was suffering from an inflamed achilles all year.

Hope so

Stubbs

Both scouting reports and statistical data have him as an elite defender in CF, and he’s had very good SB/CS ratios. I think he’s getting overlooked due to the “fantasy sports” angle of looking just at offensive stats, but I really wouldn’t be surprised to find Stubbs to be an annual top 5~10 CFer by WAR (somewhere along the lines of the 2009 versions of Ryan Sweeney or Michael Bourn).

+1

His defense/position alone makes him the best player still left in my opinion. If he can continue to show the kind of power he did in his brief MLB stint, he’ll be a very good major leaguer.

I don't get the Nolan Reimold love

Can we really expect his bat to get much better than it currently is? He looks like a decent player, but I don’t think he belongs this high.

his bat's already good

117 OPS+ / .365 wOBA is already a solid regular at a corner OF position. His biggest question is defense – his #s from last year were lousy, but apparently injuries may have played a part in that.

As for the future, while he could get a bit better (a season or three of a 900 OPS certainly isn’t out of the question), he doesn’t strike me as a potential superstar. But he’s a better bet than anyone else on the list to be an average to above-average regular for the next 5-8 years (unless you’re completely sold on Stubbs’ D, I suppose), and that’s enough for me at this point in the game.

Stubbs: Yeah, his MLB UZR numbers aren’t conclusive, but they match the scouting reports and the Total Zone numbers which is enough for me to believe that he’s legitimately an elite defender.

Reimold: His bat is pretty good right now, but I don’t see him taking the another step up offensively either. We’ll see how his defense looks post-surgery, and you can’t really assume that it’ll be good. He was a 1.0 WAR last year, and I think his ceiling is around 3. Solid player, but I don’t really think he belongs this high.

It’s just my opinion of course.

Bat looks excellent, his range was affected by his injury but he has an amazing arm in the outfied
