D'Arnaud

Would people go straight B for him, considering his bat in relation to his position? I’m not sure what his defense is like though.

he supposedly has great D

but think B- is more likely for his grade

by matthewmafa on Dec 17, 2009 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

I'd go B-

To be honest, I’m not that high on him, but I thought the reports were that he had the potential to have great D … but that he had a lot of things to work on, namely in regards to consistency. Maybe I’m off, though.

by toonsterwu on Dec 17, 2009 8:09 PM EST up reply actions

Definitely a B

I’m pretty high on him though so maybe I’m overrating him.

by jar75 on Dec 17, 2009 6:11 PM EST up reply actions

B for me, too

but I understand the counter argument… its not like D’Arnaud had a great year at the plate…

Johermyn Chavez

I’d be interested in learning more about Johermyn Chavez (Tor – OF) as he put up good numbers for a 20 year old in single-A and was reportedly eligible for the Rule-5 draft but wasn’t selected.

by Havok1517 on Dec 17, 2009 5:21 PM EST reply actions

Chavez

did play well but he’s got problems with k-zone judement.. I think his k:bb ratio this past year was 3.5:1 but ya he’s probably Toronto’s top power hitting prospect.

by hrv1978 on Dec 17, 2009 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll admit it: I love Tim Collins.

He’s not a sideshow, either: good K rates, acceptable enough walk rates, no real platoon split, and he made it to Double-A at 19. And he doesn’t have the whole Antonio Bastardo “I’m a small lefty so I give up a ton of fly balls” thing going on either. It’s looking like he can carve out a nice career for himself as a pretty good reliever, which is pretty cool.

by PhillyFriar on Dec 17, 2009 6:05 PM EST reply actions

I agree, Tim Collins better be a C+ John!

by Setterlund on Dec 17, 2009 6:08 PM EST up reply actions

Didn't he have him as C+

last year? I think he’ll stick with a C+ after another good campaign but this time at AA. I doubt he goes B- but maybe…

B- seems high for a reliever who’s never going to close.

Moises Sierra

I’m no John Sickels or Matt Eddy or any other person at BA that goes out to see minor league games but I am kinda surprised Sierra didn’t make the Jays top 10 on BA Tuesday. I like Sierra’s upside just as much as Jacksons and probably more.

I know they don’t work together but I’m sure they talk with each other and take each other’s opinions into account when they do there analysis of prospects.

by hrv1978 on Dec 17, 2009 6:06 PM EST reply actions

Sierra vs Jackson

I think Sierra is more likely to reach his upside b/c his major problem (power) is more likely to be fixable than is Jackson’s K-rate. However, I don’t think Sierra’s ceiling is as high b/c Jackson is as good a defender and at a premium defensive position and Jackson walks more. So Sierra, to have a higher ceiling, would have to have significantly more power than Jackson to be as valuable as him if they both worked out, so I just don’t see it. All in all I think Sierra is the better prospect right now b/c he’s put more together on the field, but ceiling wise Jackson gets the nod.

Adam Loewen

What does everyone think of him going forward? Can he continue to improve and become something serviceable on a ML bench or regular?

by hrv1978 on Dec 17, 2009 6:08 PM EST reply actions

stewart

Do you think he’s ranked any higher than the three players they just acquired.
P.S. I think it’s sad he is the top rated prospect in our system (by BA anyway)

by daman316 on Dec 17, 2009 6:34 PM EST reply actions

Well ...

I would argue that that’s not such a big deal when 4 of our top 10 from last season, including 1-2, graduated to the majors (Snider, Cecil, Romero, Rzepczynski).

by jayjay on Dec 17, 2009 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

My guess

is that Stewart will be higher than Travis D. I think the debate is btw Stewart and Wallace for 2 … not sure which way I lean. Probably Wallace.

Jenkins

BA rated him with the best slider in the system. Does he look like a slightly better Blanton, or could be anyway.
and regarding Loewen, his first full season showed good plate discipline, that looks like about it.
Is mastrionni a legitimate prospect? I don’t think so myself, but that’s just me.
Can Reider Gonzalez be anything more than maybe an innings eater spot starter type?
Other than Wallace, I don’t see another impact bat, not one that looks like anything close to a sure thing anyway.

by daman316 on Dec 17, 2009 6:40 PM EST reply actions

Impact bats

Yeah, there really isn’t any impact bats after Wallace.

The next best at this point, by quite a margin, I would suggest is Eric Thames, but he cannot seem to stay healthy. After him, David Cooper and Brad Emaus. Emaus looks like he had some bad luck and Cooper was put in a tough spot starting his first full pro year in AA, but everything I’ve heard about them is both will REALLY have to hit to add value b/c they have serious defensive issues.

by jayjay on Dec 17, 2009 7:18 PM EST up reply actions

And ...

Yes I’m ignoring Dopirak. Maybe I’m wrong though, not sure. Will be interesting to see what John thinks of him at this point.

Robert (Bobby) Bell

I really like him but I would also like to see him at AA and higher. Considering what he’s done so far I’d give him a B-

by hrv1978 on Dec 17, 2009 9:11 PM EST reply actions

+1

Big fan of Bell – I understand (Callis, from BA) that his big pitch is a change, limiting his potential upside. But that level of control has been ridiculous. He also seems to have ported his skills over to starting nicely. I am also interested in seeing how Huggins develops – seems similar, if not quite so obscenely-so, numbers-wise.
Curious if Brisker and/or Wilson can turn it around and very pleased by the development of Tyler Pastornicky.
Looking at the long list above, I have to think that Beck, McDade and Van Kirk are just bodies at this point.
From the DSL, Simon Vasquez has intrigued me as well as pitchers Milciades Santana, Jose Vargas and Fernando Bello.
Finally, I am curious about the Jays’ overslot signings from last year: Marisnick, Hobson, Drew Hutchinson and Daniel Webb (especially Webb). What kind of upside are we looking at here?

by ofsticksandbats on Dec 18, 2009 9:44 AM EST up reply actions

What score would Mark Rzepczynski get?

Had he not graduated. I’m pretty high on him in general despite the high BB rates but yeah a little sad that he doesn’t make this list, hopefully John can do a feature though.

Ryan Schrimpf anybody?

Hear a lot of good things about him and comparisons, any chance he makes it in the top 30? I’d hope so!

by Ralpho316 on Dec 18, 2009 12:01 AM EST reply actions

I like Andew Liebel as the next in the pipeline of essentially replacement arms for the Jays.

by WrenFGun on Dec 18, 2009 12:23 AM EST reply actions

Arencibia

I guess I’m most interested in where JP ranks compared to a very nice group of prospect catchers in the AL. And is he even going to stay at catcher? I don’t like him as much as Conger, Santana, or Montero…but I like him better than most of the rest.

Other than him,
Cooper, Ahrens, Tolisano, Rzepczynski

And most importantly…will Cecil be in the starting lineup out of spring training? Will he be in the rotation or get groomed as the closer?
