Scouting The Sally

I'm writing this to give a little link love to a great site I found this past July. Some of you are probably already aware of it.

scoutingthesally.com is the link and it's run by a guy named Mike Newman.

I stumbled across the site this past July and have been thoroughly impressed by how in depth and detailed it is. The site focuses on "Sally" league players and gives scouting reports, video, and in game analyse of what he saw. The scouting reports go beyond the basic generic 1's I often see. He includes things like mound presence and body types. What I especially like is for pitchers he goes into detail about pitches not just a generic good breakingball he'll tell you where the pitch was being located how well he controled/speed as well as giving accurate velocity reports. For me it's refreshing because it seems I read scouting reports so often that exaggerate a players velocity.

Lot's of video so you can get a feel for a player. You'll find write ups comparing/contrasting players such as Manny Banuelos v. Casey Kelly. A ton of in game scouting reports. He did a nice piece on how he saw BA's league top 20 for the "Sally". And this is all done on what he actually saw at the games he attended. For me I give much more weight to what someone saw in person especially Mike really seems to know what he's looking at and what to look for. Check out the site. I'm looking forward to following next years crop of players.

Keep up the great work Mike!

Mike goes about his business the right way

He’s a refreshing addition to the prospect blogging scene.

It’s a great niche, especially since scouting reports at the low levels are so few and far between for the non-elite guys. Mike does great work, and gets good quality information and analysis out there.

I live in a SALLY city

I see first hand the games, maybeI should consider offering a hand.

I have a couple of people lined up to lend a hand in the spring and would love to find more. I’d like to expand the blogs ability to track pitcher velocities, quantifiable data, and video. Since I have literally no budget, I would only ask for information hardcore baseball fans would already be seeking.

I'm in Greensboro

But do not have a video camcorder or digital video recorder. I attend between 3-5 games per year.

Greensboro

They never did come down to Savannah last season and I was disappointed that I missed them. Hand, Skipworth, and Galloway were guys I would have liked to scout.

Have you considered

Using the pitch FX data from MiLB.com.. it’s inconsistent but it’s probably the best measure.

I have been impressed with Pitch F/X

but….it is inconsistent and I would rather go with what I see off a number of radar guns. One of the big things I try to do is limit my writing to players I have seen in person. The most comfortable next step would be to work with people I trust compiling more information.

Reviewing some of my AFL video

I don’t think that Minor hides the ball very well.

I have about 3 mins of video going up tomorrow

He actually looks a little bit more stiff than I remember. I would probably move his athleticism from solid average to low average based on his being a little stiff.

I only saw Minor get blown up in the AFL prospect game and that outing certainly would support your statement about his not hiding the ball.

I've seen him a couple of times

I saw one of his starts at Vanderbilt via webcast last year and the AFL game, I just haven’t been impressed with anything that he threw. It’s obviously a very small sample size though.
