Pick 10/15 Please
Hey gang,
I could use some help picking 10 guys to keep from the following list of 15 prospects...
Michael Stanton - gonna be a beast.
Justin Smoak - see above.
Jordan Lyles - impressive k numbers in low A.
Chris Withrow - getting a lot of love lately.
Jenrry Mejia - crazy stuff, still needs to harness
Jaff Decker - crappy home park, but future .300 20 HR hitter?
Ike Davis - I see a 30+ HR 1b for the Mets
Josh Bell - could put up sexy numbers in Camden.
Thomas Neal - should become a force in the Giants lineup as a run producer.
Tyler Flowers - will take over for Pierzynski in 2011, good power, so so avg
Brandon Allen - future 1b of the snakes can mash, does he start right away?
Marc Rzepczynski - underrated kid held his own during 60 inning audition.
Bud Norris - had several dominant outings with the Stros.
Michael Brantley - leadoff hitter for the tribe in 2010?
Jason Knapp - front of the rotation upside if his health issues stay in the past
I would appreciate your recommendations for the 10 prospects to keep. Rank them if you have time, thanks!

Drop Decker, Brantley, Neal, Knapp. Not sure about the 5th guy. Allen, Rzep and Norris probably are the lowest left prospect-wise, but all 3 could get considerable playing time this year. I’d tend to drop a pitcher before a hitter so, altho I like both, take your pick between Rzep and Norris.
Dewey
Hi Dewey,
Ike Davis – I LIKE IKE
Josh Bell – I DO NOT LIKE
Josh Bell reminds me of a young Cal Ripken. He might play alot, but his .323 hitting seasons will be followed by some .251 stinkers.
Good luck with your pool Dewey Finn!!
I've got a McPheever, and only JoJo Reyes can help me!
Drop Norris, Brantley, Neal, Allen, and Flowers. Flowers isn’t going to catch, and he isn’t going to be an above average hitter at his new position.
where have you read
that flowers isnt going to catch?? Everything that i have read is that he has improved upon his defense

Tough Calls Category
Allen – As someone mentioned above, you have better options there… this one hurts, though. Its basically him or Ike and I’d go Ike.
Neal – Like him, but its the same thing as Allen, here, just farther away and with a few more question marks. Very intriguing…Somewhat Easier Calls But Still Kind of Tough Category
Norris – Command and mechanics worry me that he’s destined for the pen. Close call here though. Pretty promising arm.
Rzepczynski – Ive explained my thoughts in the past on him on this site… not a huge fan. He’s ok, but a lot of risk here and what kind of upside are we really talking about?
Decker – Good hitter, but Im just not sure he has enough power to be a premium fantasy asset, not worth the risk.

Allen > Davis
I think Allen being a year closer than Davis, plus the ballparks each will be playing in, make Allen a better choice.
Whew!
My first thought was that these are the guys you have in our Super Sickles League, and I thought, holy crap, how’d we let you get that many great minor leaguers. Now that I see it’s another league, I can give you a fairer opinion.
Personally, I’d drop Neal, Decker, Rzepcynski, Lyles and Brantley. I’d think about Norris instead of one of theothers, but that’s who I’d go with.
But I’d also like to add that this is a great discussion question. I don’t see anyone here who’s a no-brainer to drop. Nice balance.
The wind is in the buffalo.
Don’t drop Lyles. That would be crazy. At least he didn’t tell you drop Stanton or Smoak.

Not crazy
I’m not saying I don’t like Lyles. But he’s nowhere close to the Stanton/Smoak level as you are inferring. Hell, I like Neal, Decker, Brantley and Rzepczynski also. I like all fifteen players, and I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to keeping Lyles. But while he had very nice numbers in A ball, he’s still on a weak Houston squad (as is Norris, but at least we know Norris is a major leaguer – we don’t know that about Lyles), and I don’t project him as a sure-fire star. He could be, but he’s not a given, in my opinion.
The wind is in the buffalo.
well, i’m not saying lyles is on the stanton/smoak level, but rather that he is certainly in the argument for 3, and probably the front runner. the indication was clear that the only worse advice you could give in my opinion would be to drop stanton or smoak.

at the very least, he should be one of the highest ranked players when top 100s come out. that would give him pretty good trade value, if you personally didn’t believe in him.

RE: Brantley
I saw this kid having the potential to hit close to .300 with 80-100 R and 40-50 SBs. Am I way off base with these projections? He seems like the ideal leadoff hitter for the Indians.
unsexy
It’s just the complete and utter lack of power makes it hard to be too excited about. But hey – at least he’s off of 1b now!
The wind is in the buffalo.
Even though Brantley has played 313 games in the outfield, he’s played 53 at first base, according to Baseball Cube.

The 5 I would drop
The 3 obvious ones to drop:
Bud Norris
Marc Rzepczynski
Jason Knapp
The other 2 are a bit more difficult. Here is my quick take:
Decker – A lot of his value is tied up in OBP, which is not counted in many fantasy leagues.
Neal – Has only really produced last year in a hitter friendly environment. He was also probably on the upper end of the acceptable age range last year as well – meaning he really cannot afford any more setbacks.
Brantley – Still unsure if he will get on base enough to use his speed to its fullest extent.
Lyles – Posted eye-popping numbers with good but not great stuff. Will be very interesting to see how he performs this year.
You can make a great argument for any of those 4, but for me I would drop Lyles and Decker. They are the furthest away from the bigs – meaning they would have to end up being significantly better than the other guys in order to have keeping them make sense.
rzepczynski
not sure why it is so obvious to drop someone who had an 8.8 K/9 as a 23/24 year old in the AL East. his BB/9 was weak at 4.4 .. but he was still a league average pitcher (at least) without great command. he is a young kid and if he learns how to keep the ball in the zone, combining the K rate and strong GB rates (51.2% in 2009) he could be a very useful #3/4 starter for a long time.
he has maintained his K rates and GB rates every step of his pro career and there is no indication his BB/9 won’t settle back into the 3’s where it sat for his MiLB seasons.
i see nothing to dislike about him. you might point to his repetoire, which features a FB which sits in the high 80s, but his strong secondary stuff and deceptive delivery have let him put up great numbers and we shouldnt doubt him yet.
