Top SP MiL sleepers for 2010

This fanpost was influenced by the "Top Minor League Pitchers" thread.  As I was replying to the post, I found mysefl coming up more with sleepers rather than actual solidifed top 25 or so prospects.

Star-divide

My sleeper for 2010 is Matt Hobgood.  I saw mentions of every other top prep arm from the 2009 draft class except Hobby.  If he continues to improve his changeup, he will be a very good SP prospect.  With a sinking fastball that sits in the low 90's and touches 95/96 MPH, a plus curve that could be a future plus-plus pitch and a changeup that according to BA flashed "plus" in Bluefield last year, he could be pretty good, especially if he learns to utilize the sinker and get strong GB percentages.  I honestly find it kinda puzzling that he was rated basically in a tier below the rest of the prep arms, but I guess that is what happens when you lack projection.  I guess it also has to do with the fact that his fastball didn't touch mid 90's until the end of his HS season....

Another sleeper I like who is also from the 09 draft is Chad James.  He has good stuff, but gets overlooked because his fastball is a tick behind the rest of the top prep arms from the 09 draft.  It may also have to do with the fact that his fastball was in the upper 80's going into his senior year of HS, but as we sit, he projects to have 3 plus pitches in his fastball, curveball and changeup.

I also think Zach Britton is gonna move up lists big time next year as well.

So, who is your sleeper(s) as far as MiL SP prospects for the 2010 season?

Cleveland

has a lot of good young SP, one I really think will vault into top 50 talk is TJ House.

Perez and Cook began to turn some heads but I think they could really piece things together next year.

Chad James

I like him a lot more than Hobgood. James is a bit underrated at this point.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 16, 2009 7:37 PM EST reply actions

Drafted in the 1st round isn't a sleeper.

Great future though. CH will give him early success

I just got on twitter.Follow me at http://twitter.com/JDSussman
I'll be trying to post lines and analysis as much as possible.

Agreed

I wasn’t saying that he was, but the original poster mentioned him and Hobgood. I like James a lot more than Hobgood, and think he’s the most underrated of the first round HS arms.

by Jeff Reese on Dec 17, 2009 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

Jake Brigham and Matt Thompson.

Both Rangers prospects.

Brigham should start out in High A Bakersfield.
Thompson should start in Low A Hickory.

Oakland

starters Arnold Leon (RHP) and Anthony Capra (LHP). Capra is probably not as much of a sleeper as Leon, but I think both end up top 100 prospects buy the end of the 2010 season.

by JPShark on Dec 16, 2009 7:56 PM EST reply actions

Wow! That would be a surprise.

With Oakland I like Ben Hornbeck.

It's not the results, it's how you look going about those results -- Tim McCarver

I’ve got a couple favorites:

LHP Kevin James with Tampa. He was bound for Boston College until the Rays failed to sign their top two ‘09 draft picks, and therefore they went over slot to sign him. He’s tall, fluid, and already has two plus pitches. He’s also got all the King Of Queens jokes going for him.

RHP Jason Ray with Oakland. He’s from a small school, is only 5-11, is 25, and missed nearly two years with an arm injury, but Ray reemerged to put himself on the map in ’09. Some of the best velocity in the California League this year. If he can overcome some bouts with control he will make a case to fast track in 2010.

Real Quick

Clayton Cook (CLE)
Kyle Allen (NYM)
Jake Odorizzi (MIL)
Jarred Cosart (PHI)
Mauarys Correra (LAA)
John Lamb (KC)

Either sleeper or breakout candidates

by cubsfan1 on Dec 16, 2009 8:28 PM EST reply actions

I like this list

Quite a few guys on here I think could break out.

RIP Nick Adenhart

by gatling on Dec 16, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

yep

I’ll be keeping close tabs on Cook, Allen, Odorizzi and Lamb next year

by jibs on Dec 16, 2009 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

odorizzi seems kind of forgotten

definitely think he’ll have a great year in 2010. was high on him in the ’08 draft.

and I’ve made my man crush on Lamb well known. incredibly polished for a guy so young.

Allen Webster (18th round 2008 draft)

will be 20 next year. Will probably start in Low A.. Fastball velocity jumped from 89-90 to 94-95 when he fixed his mechanics.. also has a plus breaking pitch.. i think he will break out big time and be in the top 100 prospect by years end

by matthewmafa on Dec 16, 2009 9:17 PM EST reply actions

A Cubs sleeper or two

would be Justin Bristow and Jeffry Antigua. Antigua is a young lefty with 3 above average pitches that he can throw for strikes. Bristow’s another arm from the 2008 draft who was working his way back last year. Former positional player (SS off the top I think), he’s got good athleticism and was hitting the mid-90’s according to some (at year’s end).

by toonsterwu on Dec 16, 2009 9:22 PM EST reply actions

Rhee has to be a sleeper given his injuries lately, I think most people have forgotten about him.

by jfish26101 on Dec 16, 2009 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

Bundy

A knew injury essentially knocked him out of the 1st round, keep thinking he will put it together so perhaps he will next year.

by jfish26101 on Dec 16, 2009 9:26 PM EST reply actions

I look for...

Ethan Martin (LAD) to have a breakout.

I agree with Pinedo (injuries) but Alvarez is pretty much on the scene.

Pineda

Damnit, wish they would stop making key boards smaller.

by jfish26101 on Dec 16, 2009 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

Couple I like:

Jon Bachanov
Alex Colome (where the hell is the hype on this guy?)
Jeanmar Gomez (grossly underrated)
Evan Anundsen (also grossly underrated, despite pretty unremarkable stuff)
Wynn Pelzer
Jeremy Hefner
Travis Wood
Mauricio Robles
Ethan Hollingsworth
Jeremy McBryde
Alex Torres

by WrenFGun on Dec 16, 2009 10:49 PM EST reply actions

+111

on Gomez

and Wynn Pelzer

I too also like Jeremy Hefner – think he is pretty darn solid….

Alex Torres and Marico Robles I don’t really like though….

Rene Tosoni is good.

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Dec 16, 2009 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Bachanov Isn't Starting

Robles I agree with, Colome was #1 or 2 in the App league, Torres i thought about.

In that same vein, and even though he's been highly rated

I expect Nick Hagadone to really impress this year.

TJ House and Jeanmar Gomez too.

by alskor on Dec 16, 2009 10:49 PM EST reply actions

I think Nick Hagadone may be the most overrated prospect in all of baseball…and that’s saying something for someone who is probably not a top 100 prospect.

24, can’t throw strikes, probably a RP.

+1 on Gomez, though.

by WrenFGun on Dec 16, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions

I was thinking as a reliever with Hagadone

forgot we were just doing SPs.

Hagadone has nasty, nasty stuff. I think he’s going to be a Closer.

by alskor on Dec 17, 2009 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

Potential deep sleepers

on the Twins (besides A. Salcedo)

Matthew Bashore (not really a sleeper as he was ’09 draftee sandwich round)
Matthew Tone
Cesar Ciurcina
B.J. Hermson

Rene Tosoni is good.

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Dec 16, 2009 10:53 PM EST reply actions

Tonkin is interesting and I still think McCardell could be a very good RP.

Chris Dwyer

Great stuff, needs to work on his control. Just another one of KC’s great young arms.

by Archie A on Dec 16, 2009 11:11 PM EST reply actions

Big Dwyer fan...

nice fastball/curveball in a lefty with size.

Chad James is the other guy from ’09.

How about: Christian Bethancourt and Domingo Santana

Brad Hand

Struggled early in Greensboro last year, but had a great second half. Low 90s sinking fastball, plus curve, solid change.

He’ll be in a pitching environment in Jupiter this year, and I’m expecting some breakout numbers.

by bucklin12 on Dec 17, 2009 6:04 PM EST reply actions

from the poster

who during last year’s off-season said watch out for Casey Crosby, Alex Avila, and (regrettably) Cale Iorg, I would say Andy Oliver would be the Tiger sleeper. They love his arm and are fully confident that his breaking pitch is/will be back. Could be fast-tracked to the bigs.

by The Fume on Dec 17, 2009 7:53 PM EST reply actions

Furbush

was actually the only other name I thought about putting down. But I think of prospects in terms of upside or big league readiness..he’s not quite big league ready, nor is he a front end starter IMO.

But I still think there’s a real good possibility of him putting up some good numbers at AA and that leading to him getting a call if a spot-starter is needed late 2010 or 2011. And maybe he could hang on.

by The Fume on Dec 18, 2009 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

Crosby

While he’ll be a highly rated Tiger spec, I think overall he’s a bit underrated, and has that type of potential to sky rocket up lists this year.

2010 Tigers deadweight contracts coming off the books:

Maggs (18M)
Willis (12M)
Bonderman (12.5M)
Robertson (10M)

2011 is the year of the Tiger!

by sportznut3081 on Dec 17, 2009 9:14 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

A lefty that touches 97, on his first year back from TJ surgery, and dominating? And he’s still very young, at 20/21 he’ll be perfect age for A+, if not young. Dominant.

SF Giants sixth round pick in 2009

Here's Some Deep Guys

Chris Archer – Traded to the Cubs in the DeRosa deal, good stuff, poor command.
Ryan Searle – Australian Cubs hurler, 20 and did well in high A, has potential
Paul Demny – Nationals pitcher, drafted out of high school, first full season was last year, over 1 k/ip, 2.84 k/bb ratio, was hit hard, but looking good.
Brandon King – Drafted by nationals out of West Virginia, looking good first part season.
Cameron Lamb – Another Australian pitcher, great ratios except for walks, which aren’t horrible (4.3/9ip), pretty good stuff, great frame (6’3, 190)
Casey Fry – Young Marlins pitcher, drafted out of HS, scouting reports look decent.

I can see several of those guys breaking through this season, if not all.

Jefress ~ no mentions

Is Jefress done?

or, conversely, would he not be a “sleeper” if he stays clean and puts up #’s this year?

by DodgersBacktoBrooklyn2011 on Dec 19, 2009 4:21 PM EST reply actions

Chris Archer...

definitely my favorite Cubs sleeper. Could turn into one of those JJ (Braves) type pitchers…really nice fastball/curveball combo.

by SenorGato on Dec 20, 2009 12:33 PM EST reply actions

Pelzer

I thought he was outstanding at times during his days at South Carolina, though he was a bullpen guy.

Are the Padres committed to keeping him in the rotation?

Barnese

More on point to this thread … I really like what Nick Barnese’s (always call him “Bar-NEZ-e” even though he pronounces it “Bar-NEESE”) accomplished last season at Bowling Green.

I’d like to hear a true scouting report on him.
