Top Minor League Arms?

It seems over the past year a lot of the games top young arms have graduated up to the major leagues.

I'm curious to see what people opinions are of the top 10-15 arms out there who have not been called up yet? Aside from Stephen Strasburg of course.

Guys like Neftali / Hanson /  / Matusz / Tillman / Wade Davis / Bumgarner were some of the top talent last year. Who takes their places? Hellickson? Matzek? Drabek?

My top 10, in no partiular order:

Stephen Strasburg

Casey Kelly
Casey Crosby
Jacob Turner

This is a good start, and I’d agree with most of it. I’d probably have Friedrich in there over a guy like Miller, but you can’t go wrong with any of those mentioned.

I’d also throw in names like: Friedrich (as mentioned), Kyle Drabek, Matt Moore, Jenrry Mejia, Jason Knapp, Jordan Lyles, Simon Castro, Jake Arrieta, Ethan Martin

There are a lot of high upside arms I could list, and we’re probably missing someone big, but these guys really stick out to me.

Check that. Meant to have Chris Withrow on there, and not Drabek (since he was previously mentioned).

I actually LOVE your inclusion of Miller

I truly think he will reach his ace upside

You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--

Top 15 (in no order)

I assume we’re not including guys with MLB experience:

Stephen Strasburg
Martin Perez
Casey Kelly
Tyler Matzek
Christian Friedrich
Jenrry Mejia
Matt Moore
Casey Crosby
Jeremy Hellickson
Kyle Drabek
Chris Withrow
Simon Castro
Jacob Turner
Julio Teheran
Mike Montgomery

There could be an oversight, but I think I hit the major ones.

Agree on Montgomery

He’s going to be a solid #2-type, I think.

That's why they call them business sox

Love Matt Moore

Eliminate some walks and he’s a dominant pitcher. Seems like he gets overlooked in the Rays system.

by otis_nixon on Dec 17, 2009 9:07 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah...

Him and Casey Crosby. I keep hearing people say theyre “underrated.” I think those two are pretty much everyone’s favorite, sexy choices to be the next great pitching prospects. They might be slightly overrated, actually. Little is ever said of their flaws and what they need to work on.

by alskor on Dec 19, 2009 10:51 PM EST up reply actions

Crosby

He was underrated around July, but he definitely isn’t now (I don’t think Moore was ever underrated). They’re both borderline top 50 prospects and I think that’s about right considering how far away they are and the control issues of each.

You beat me to Rondon.

I was going to add Daniel Hudson, but I forgot that he got called up in September.

by Alex Trebek on Dec 16, 2009 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure on Rondon

I’ve got him for fantasy, so trust me I would love for him to be hyped and touted as much as possible. But the lack of an out pitch scares me greatly.

I just got on twitter.Follow me at http://twitter.com/JDSussman
I'll be trying to post lines and analysis as much as possible.

Rondon is probably still a year away.

I agree with you. Although he had excellent stats at AA and AAA this year, Rondon probably still needs another year of seasoning. He still leaves the ball over the plate too much… However, I think he could become a #2 in a few years.

by Alex Trebek on Dec 17, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Year away?

I think he’ll be up by July at the latest.

They started fast tracking him to come up in the pen last year before they pulled the plug on the season. Plus, its not like the rotation is full of guys better than him right now.

by alskor on Dec 17, 2009 12:33 PM EST up reply actions

Allow me to rephrase that.

I think that despite Rondon’s excellent stats last year, he’s far from a finished product. Could he positively contribute to the Indians this year? Probably. But I think that he needs to learn how to pitch to the corners of the plate more before he can truly realize his potential. To sum it up, I’m a Rondon believer who thinks he can become a #2 in the future, but I don’t see a Tommy Hanson-esqe debut in 2010.

Phillippe Aumont, definitely.

forgot him

he’s definitely top 15 worthy

by MightyMoose on Dec 16, 2009 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

What about Bumgarner?

I know Bumgarner’s stock has dropped a little, but he still has to be mentioned among the top minor league arms.

by thefordhamflash on Dec 16, 2009 5:14 PM EST reply actions

I believe

The poster was inquiring about arms that have not debuted in the majors.

Jason Knapp

Although there are some injury concerns, if he can stay healthy, he will shoot up the prospect rankings. He possesses a filthy fastball and curveball combination that will carve up batters as he moves up the levels.

by Dewey Finn on Dec 16, 2009 5:54 PM EST reply actions

right now

I think there is a case for top 25, think he’s below top 15 right now. He has to stay healthy first.

by MightyMoose on Dec 16, 2009 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

I think people are seriously underrating Knapp.

He possesses many of the characteristics that people rave about in others – like Mejia, for instance. Yes, injury questions and some other issues, but he has a really high ceiling.

by alskor on Dec 16, 2009 9:49 PM EST up reply actions

Not underrating

but until he can show he can make through a full season without injury than it’s hard to put him in the top 15, i think. As you can see from my own list, i excluded Parker for that exact reason.

by MightyMoose on Dec 16, 2009 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

Wheeler?

Would Zack Wheeler make it on anyone’s list?

by Ltisme on Dec 16, 2009 9:48 PM EST reply actions

Im not going to try to give a list because I dont know enough about each team’s power prospects to sort them, but I will say that from the Dodgers, Withrow, E. Martin, Aaron Miller and Garrett Gould all have ace potential.

A video of Withrow’s FB/Curve combo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4L32qiplAg&NR=1

FB reaches 99 at times, and the curve is NASTY.

A great look at the curve: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTewFQxSujA&feature=related

Martin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hWflCjzBtY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btL2Dk-8REo&feature=related

Gould had the best curveball in the draft according to scouts last year and Miller was a beast last year, in his debut… they all deserve a spot, pretty high up IMO
