Lester or Votto
Without getting into detail about who I'm giving up and what the rest of my roster looks like...
If you could choose between getting Lester or Votto in a dynasty league, which on would you choose? Just based on talent/potential. I have the option of either/or, but can't make up my mind. They are both the same about the same age and both are near the top of their positions. Hoping some of you can help me. Thanks

Lester
Front line SP >> Top Half 1B.
You can get another 1B easier than you can get another Lester. Or lets put it this way – if you chose one, which would be harder to find/live with – a guy who can give you 75% of what Votto gives you or a guy who gives you 75% of what Lester gives you? SPs are just harder to come by in pretty much every format, and Lester is a good one.
Lets try this exercise. Name all the SPs you project better than or equal to Lester going forward. Now project all the 1B better than or equal to Votto.
The answer is easily Lester any way you look at it.

My Bias
Is naturally against pitchers in general. Too much year to year variation and a greater tendency to get hurt make me value everyday hitters much higher so I’d go with Votto.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Votto easily. I don’t think Lester’s better than a #4, he got lucky the last couple of years.

Thanks
Looks like the consensus is Lester. I have Carlos Pena at 1B anyways, with Freeman behind. BTW, I’d be giving up Snider and Hellickson. Is that worth it? I would also be recieving a lesser prospect.

Lester
And if you had to give up Snider AND Hellickson you were getting robbed. Snider is a solid prospect and has already started to prove himself. Hellickson could be a very special pitcher, probably #1 or #2.

Uh...
That’s a perfectly reasonable package for either of those players. Prospects aren’t worth what you think they’re worth, unless you play in a league that’s really easy to win.

A few years ago...
I made a similar deal of Lester for Votto in a dynasty league. Now this was before Lester and Votto both emerged. I also predicted both would be stars and even said Lester would be the ace of the Red Sox. I was right. In reality, you go with Lester every day of the week but in fantasy I usually take the bat. At the time of my trade, I needed a little 1B insurance and was fairly deep in pitching. Still, you can’t go wrong but I go bats ahead of arms in fantasy.
