Hermida Traded to Red Sox

Red Sox acquired outfielder Jeremy Hermida from the Marlins for LHP Hunter Jones and LHP Jose Alvarez.

Star-divide

Hermida, the 11th overall pick in the 2002 draft, frustrated with the Marlins with injuries and unexceptional play in four years as a major leaguer and there was no way the team was going to pay him $3 million or so in his second year of arbitration. Still, it's a shame that they couldn't do better than a pair of generic left-handers. Hermida still has a lot of promise. He hit .296/.369/.501 in 123 games in 2007, and he's just going to be 26 next year. The Red Sox may not be content with him as a regular in the event that Jason Bay leaves, but they couldn't pass on the chance to acquire him at this price. Hunter Jones is a pretty mediocre L RP.  Anyone know much about Jose Alvarez?

Alvarez

Really good in single A thats all I know…The Marlins always “seem” to get bad deals but they always turn out good.

I dreamed that this was coming...

Dan Uggla and Josh Johnson are next to the Twins for

Carlos Gomez
Alexi Casilla
Carlos Gutierrez
Francisco Liriano
Anthony Swarzak
and either Glen Perkins or Brian Duensing….

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

Wow...

That’s a lot to give up.

by alskor on Nov 5, 2009 6:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thats definitely not enough to get

Uggla and Johnson. You’re giving up mostly quantity in that trade. If the Twins get Uggla and Johnson, it would be more like a package of Liriano, Blackburn, Valencia, Ramos, Benson

ARE U KIDDING

THE MARLINS ARE NOT GIVING UP JOSH JOHNSON

by mlefkee2 on Nov 5, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

why not?

he’ll cost 10 mill + in 2 years and the marlins dont have the money to pay him so they will trade him..

by matthewmafa on Nov 5, 2009 9:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree

but after 2010 I think he will get traded….

why not one year in advance? ;)

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?

by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Nov 5, 2009 11:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

because he's very underpaid for what he does.

why would they trade that early unless they get a massive haul for him?

which i don’t think the twins could even compile enough for him… Hicks would definitely have to be involved, anyway

by daveh33 on Nov 5, 2009 11:45 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I dont think the Marlins would trade Johnson

I just meant teams don’t usually make trades that empty out 5 or 6 of their top 8 prospects. Twins cant afford to be doing that.

future LOOGY?

Tough to say what this means

Here’s a few theories:

1) Sox are already fed up with the way the market for Bay and Holliday is shaping up so they get Hermida to platoon with Baldelli. Hermida hits RHP very well and Baldelli kills LHPs. Or another RHH LF could be acquired through trade or free agency.

If they went this route I would expect Youk to shift to 3B, Lowell to be moved and an upgrade at 1B to be acquired (though I would doubt its Adrian Gonzalez).

2) Sox are already fed up with the way the market for Bay and Holliday is shaping up so they get Hermida as insurance against losing out on Bay and Holliday, and as leverage in Bay negotiations.

3) Sox acquire Hermida as an upgrade at backup OFer. They want to bring Rocco back, but arent content to rely on his health.

4) Sox acquire Hermida because the price was too cheap to pass up, considering their uncertainty in the OF. If a better option presents itself they can always trade him somewhere or nontender him.

5) Sox acquire Hermida as a 4th OFer to be used fairly liberally. This situation seems very unlikely as he’s a LHH, as are Ellsbury and Drew. They strongly prefer RHH 4th OFers, so they can sit one of Ellsbury or Drew against LHPs.

My gut says they arent thrilled with the idea of starting Hermida, even in a platoon, but couldnt pass up the chance to land a player theyve admired for awhile so cheaply, especially with the Bay situation in flux.

Agreed with #4.

yep

Can’t pass up a deal like that, if you can afford to carry his salary.

by jibs on Nov 5, 2009 7:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

All of the above?

The Sox will spend money but only at the right number of years and dollars. If Bay turned down 4/$60M and the Cardinals’ opening offer is 6/$96M, the Red Sox may be hedging their bets. Hermedia is a great value pick but a curious choice based on how their roster could shape up.

If Bay or Holliday is signed, he becomes a 4th outfielder. However, he can’t play CF and can’t platoon with lefty Drew. Therefore they need to carry someone like Baldelli who significantly cuts into his playing time.

If Bay or Holliday isn’t signed, Hermedia becomes the starting LF. Unless they make a run at a huge middle of the order bat (Gonzalez) he makes the offense weaker. If they go that route, maybe they try to acquire Stephen Drew and include Byrnes (as a salary dump to less the prospects heading west). Stephen patrols SS while JD, Ellsbury, Baldelli, Hermedia and Byrnes share outfield duties.

uh...

Sarcasm…?

Or is he a personal favorite of yours?

by alskor on Nov 5, 2009 7:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

At first glance

It looks decent for both sides. Hermida was coming off two iffy years and likely in line for an arbitration raise. His value simply wasn’t high, and there was spec that he may get non-tendered. From the little I know on Alvarez, it seems like, if things develop, he has a chance for two good secondary pitches to go with a decent fastball.

For the Red Sox, alskor listed most of the reasons already. Cheap deal, gets them OF depth, gives them a backup plan if things all through. Sort of their version of the Yankees Nick Swisher deal last year, taking a gamble on some potential and giving themselves some options. I gotta think they’ll keep pushing on Bay (or Holliday).

I should add, too

…that breaking down the numbers isnt particularly helpful here – even though Hermida has weird home/road splits, among other known issues that have been discussed before. The Red Sox interest, I have to beleive, is scouting based. The Baseball Ops people think they can fix him and/or they see something about him that will play better at Fenway/in the AL/in a platoon/whatever.

by alskor on Nov 5, 2009 8:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

looks similar to...

the Eric Hinske deal. Hinske looked great as 2002 ROY, had some injury problems and then the Red Sox scooped him up for a PTBN and cash considerations while the Sox were hampered by injuries following the 06 All Star break. I think the Baseball Ops people think they can mold Heremida into the talent he could have been. Hopefully he has a bigger impact then Hinske.

Steal...

Hermida needed a change of scenery, and Fenway is a perfect fit for his skills.

I wanted the Cubs to make this move. He’s ready to break out as a hitter.

I've been saying that for 3 years

and have been proven wrong each time.

Hermida isn’t a bad gamble on their part, but he’ll never resemble someone who should have been ranked as a top 5 prospect by BA just 4 yrs ago.

Hermida is the next Paul Oneill

watch it happen before our eyes next year

by Bravesin07 on Nov 6, 2009 5:16 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Damn

I didnt realize Hermida was a whiny little bitch. That’s a shame. Oh no, wait. Paul O’Neill is a hero for throwing fits and arguing, but Yankee fans can’t stand Youkilis for doing half the stuff O’Neill did.

by alskor on Nov 6, 2009 2:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No

O’Neill I’m sure is a Yankee legend because over a 6 year stretch (1993-1998) he had a line of 320/410/520 and was a major part of 4 world titles.

Said the same thing...

to my friend today.

Really solid gamble…

by SenorGato on Nov 6, 2009 2:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He could be.

He dropped an .870 OPS in 2007 at 23 playing in a cavern for half of his games.

if hermida couldnt hand the low pressure in FLA

i’m curious to see what happens in boston.
930 ab’s over last 2 seasons is still a decent amount even w/ injuries. As mentioned, useless vs lefties so a platoon/4th OF role be his best shot
Didnt red sox want hermida in that manny to to FLA deal that fell apart
