Who am I missing that you want included? I have to start keeping this to no more than 40 players per organization.

Brandon Belt.

He deserves to be in there over Jeremy Toole when using the ’09 draft class for comparison.

belt

Yeah, I thought about him. Saw him play in college and was fairly impressed.

by John Sickels on Nov 27, 2009 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

i had it in my mind that the giants system would stand out

for some reason. I mean, not top tier system, but good. that said, skimming over this initial player list, it doesn’t look that impressive to me. eh, maybe i’m way off.

by toonsterwu on Nov 27, 2009 6:58 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

I think this system took a step backwards.

by Jeff Reese on Nov 27, 2009 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

I thought i saw the Giants released Osiris Matos as a minor league free agent

I could be wrong though. Kevin Pucetas and Mike McBryde should be on the list

Differences with my top 40

Joe Martinez
Wendell Fairley
Dan Turpen
Aaron King

as well as the already mentioned Guzman, Rohlinger, and Belt.

by nelson95 on Nov 27, 2009 10:44 PM EST reply actions

40

No on Fairley. I don’t believe in him at all. Martinez is sort of the pitching version of Rohlinger or Downs…I could put him in. Turpen and King and Belt are all possibiliies also.

by John Sickels on Nov 28, 2009 2:25 PM EST up reply actions

Nick Liles

I’d have him over Bond. Liles is in a place to have a similar development curve and is better or equal in every tool.

by Archie A on Nov 27, 2009 11:30 PM EST reply actions

liles

Too far away. …college guy needs to show more than that in the Arizona rookie league.

I'm a big Thomas Neal fan

He was old for his level but I still like him.

He’s 21. That’s not that old for A+ is it?

The very bad man traded my son...So now I'd like you all to meet my new son, Ryan "Aaron" Garko...Dammit it's just not the same!

Should we bother with Villalona?

Seems like he might be done for a while if not forever?

Kind of...

The family of the victim asked the judge to drop the charges which he did, however the prosecutor is still planning on taking him to court. As best I can tell, the charges that were dropped were filed by the family, so the government can still file charges themselves. The rumor is that Villalona paid about 150K to get the family to drop charges, so I have little doubt that whatever witnesses there are may similarly go silent.

Last we’d heard of the Villalona case was that he was released of all fault, which we took as the family dropped the charges (most probably because of a payoff) and that since they no longer will testify there is no criminal case either.

not sure

Not sure what to do about Angel. Might drop him.

Julio Izturis, 2B. Borderline Top 20/honorable mention candidate. Wilmin Rodriguez, LHP. Fairly promising stuff despite the age-relative-to-league factor.

by StickRat on Nov 28, 2009 1:27 AM EST reply actions

izturis

20 years old and no power in rookie ball.

by John Sickels on Nov 28, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

True. So was Mariano Duncan.

by StickRat on Nov 28, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

True. and about a zillion other guys who didn’t make it.

by John Sickels on Nov 28, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough. Maybe I’m biased because I’m rooting for a Name That Izturis segment on Baseball Tonight.

by StickRat on Nov 28, 2009 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

he also has great defense, speed, and ability to take a walk

from what I heard he is larger than his brothers and is expected to gain more power as he develops.

Jose Valdez

Finally pitched and was ok..maybe a sleeper for 2010

by NYSOX on Nov 28, 2009 9:49 AM EST reply actions

Ariel Hernandez

6-figure LA signee in 2008 who put up good numbers in the AZ league.

Cameron Lamb also did well in the AZ league – good stuff, some control issues and is old for the league (coming back from injury) but is worth watching.

Still the loving, adoptive father of Hector Sanchez. And who doesn't love switch-hitting catchers with power and patience?

by tedfordfan on Nov 28, 2009 11:56 AM EST via mobile reply actions

ariel

Ariel was in the Dominican Summer League, not the Arizona Rookie League. Not going to include him at this point.

by John Sickels on Nov 28, 2009 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

I like Izturis. I’d think Aaron King needs to be on the list somewhere.

OK, so far I’m dropping Matos, Toole, and Villalona, while adding King, Belt, and Rohlenger.

additional names to consider?

Edwin Quirarte
Daryl Maday
Juan Martinez
Juan Perez
Evan Crawford
Mike McBryde
Jackson Williams

Bonds stands alone.

Mcbryde should be in there somewhere.

Does anyone know how Juan Perez’s conversion to second went? If it takes that should up his stock a little bit.

by Keenlow on Nov 28, 2009 4:38 PM EST up reply actions

They were playing him in in the OF a lot the second half the season, so it doesn’t seem that it went that well.

The team prefers him in the outfield. A big part of his season was that he was wearing a heavy knee brace that limited his mobility. He got a smaller one midseason, but he should be without it next season. Machemer says he’s one to keep an eye on once it’s off.

After Posey, Bumgarner, Wheeler, and Thomas Neal who stands out?

Is it Brandon Crawford next? Henry Sosa?

or Nick Noonan? or what about Rafael Rodriguez is Raffy still atop 10 or 12 prospect for the Giants overall?

I’ll be interested to see where 1. Kieschnick 2. Joaquin 3. Gillaspie 4. Dominguez 5. Joseph
rank out in the end.

And Pucetas ? how far has he fallen?

Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

more than the glove

im worried about his ability to put the bat on the ball, he’s horrible.

What?

You aren’t talking about Joseph, right?

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

no, sorry thinkin of dominguez.

by zeisenbe on Dec 1, 2009 3:13 AM EST up reply actions

I like Kieschnick

but I probably overrate him a bit. He and Joseph are top 10 guys. Gillaspie and Dominguez are in the 12-20 range and Joaquin is in the high teens/ low 20’s.

Can

anyone give me an idea if there any intrest or play on a catcher named Johnny Monell, my nephew played with him at Seminole cc in Florida. Monell caught this season at low A ball with at Augusta. Believe he’s playing this winter in Puerto Rico.

by Slamdog on Nov 29, 2009 2:41 PM EST reply actions

I dunno, if you’re going to let Downs in, there’s no real reason not to let Rohlinger in too.

Please hit better, Randy Winn.

David Quinowski

Probably the last guy on the 40 and shouldn’t be any higher, but he was on an upward trajectory until getting hurt.

He was healthy this year rehabbing in SS. Was going multiple innings at the end of the year. 10.1 K/9 in his career, had success in High-A before getting hurt. Could pull a Runzler next year if he stay healthy. Better bet to contribute than Downs.
