Two-Star Prospects
11. Casper Wells, OFFour More:
12. Alfredo Figaro, RHP: The undersized righty is a big league-ready middle reliever, but that's also his likely ceiling.
13. Melvin Mercedes, RHP: Mercedes is a teenager who is loaded with projection, but he needs plenty of refinement.
14. Cale Iorg, SS: The athletic, slick-fielding shortstop looked completely overmatched at Double-A, but he might have been rushed.
15. Brennan Boesch, OF: He’s a massive outfielder with massive power and massive holes in his swing.

Me too
Although I really liked him as a draft pick.
I don’t see the fuss over Oliver to be honest.
I saw Figaro make his MLB debut, and I was pretty impressed with his stuff.

Oliver
He has a very impressive fastball from the left side and a pretty good change-up. He had (in his sophomore year), a very good curve ball, but he lost it during his junior year. If he can re-establish it, he’ll be a big time pitching prospect. If not, he should at least be a good late inning reliever.
Thanks...
didn’t really know how their grading system worked. To me it sounded like five star prospect meant a top 20 or 30 guy. If that was the case I couldn’t see Turner in there.
Fangraphs just posted their top 10
[Does not include ’09 draft picks]
1. Casey Crosby
2. Ryan Strieby
3. Alex Avila
4. Scott Sizemore
5. Wilkin Ramirez
6. Robbie Weinhardt
7. Cody Satterwhite,
8. Brennan Boesch
9. Alfredo Figaro
10. Luis Marte
Pretty different. It sounds like they would have Turner 2nd behind Crosby and Fields would be somewhere in the top 10 with no mention of Olvier (so I’m assuming he wouldn’t be on the top 10 if eligible). Stieby seems to be the biggest difference between the lists, I’m pretty curious to see what he can do the next couple of seasons if given a chance.
Scouts
If it was that easy to become a scout, why wouldn’t all baseball fans be scouts?
I don’t care what title the scout has—Associate, Area, etc. nobody just gets picked for a scouting job because they are “plain ol’ baseball fans”. There is a huge difference between fan knowledge and scout knowledge.
You almost certainly have to have a background as a player or coach at some level, which does provide you with more information than the usual armchair fan who watches a couple games a week on TV. The exceptions to this are very few and are guys who have essentially made themselves scoutworthy over years of doing scouting work on their own or for some entity other than a MLB team. Believe me, nobody is going to be sitting at home watching a game and have the phone ring with a scout job offer from a MLB team. The average fan doesn’t even know the amount of paperwork, time and travel that goes into scouting, they seem to think it just sounds like a cool job and that all you have to do is go around watching baseball games.
There is also a huge difference between an avid fan and your normal casual fan that includes probably 80% or more of the baseball fans out there. I never said the Red Sox are going to get the phone book out, flip to a page randomly, and call the first name they see to hire them as a scout either?
As I said, I’ve talked with more than one person who impressed someone at a game with their analysis and it let to a job. One day they were an avid fan, the next day they were a scout. Believe what you want but I’d bet money every scout out there right now was one day just a baseball fan or former player/coach like many of the people reading sites like this.
Reminds me of Seinfeld
When George wants to be a sports broadcaster, and he tells Jerry “You know i always make interesting comments during the game.” And Jerry says “they tend to give those jobs to people, ya know, in broadcasting.”
I personally think...
Crosby is the gem of this system right now. Not many big bodied, high velocity, lefty starters out there with his potential out there.
What is Sizemore like?
What kind of player does he project to be?

Solid, not spectacular.
Decent bat for a 2B, passable glove. No star upside, but he could be a solid regular for 6-8 years.
Pedroia-lite?
I see Sizemore like Pedroia except obviously a little weaker at almost each category.
