Hector Rondon (Cle – SP)
Todd Frazier (Cin – 2B,SS,1B,OF)
Brett Lawrie (Mil – 2B)

I saw this posted on another site and wondered what people here thought. I personally think that Alvarez is the top prospect here but others have proclaimed it to be Montero. How would you rank them and why? Thanks

If Montero stays at catcher...
its him easy. Otherwise it’s Alvarez even if they both switch.
Alvarez
Montero
Santana
Rondon- I love this guy
Drabek
Taylor
Lawrie
Hicks
Morrison
Green
Martin
Frazier

And if I gave them grades it would be...
Alvarez A
Montero A
Santana A-
Rondon B+
Drabek B+
Taylor B
Lawrie B
Hicks B
Morrison B
Green C+
Martin C+
Frazier C+

Looks about right.
I think Santana would be an A if he could speak English better.

Green
C+ seems pretty low to me. I realize that he was overrated a year ago, but he seems very underrated now.
by jar75 on Nov 2, 2009 8:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Was thinking B-...
but I wanted to show how major the drop off was between these guys as prospects. Also, Green has to prove that he can stay at short, he needs to cut down on the strikeouts, and prove he has good the power he showed when he was in the cape cod league.

I don’t know how to quite contextualize college numbers, but an 18% K Rate doesn’t seem all that bad to me. I’d like to see him improve his walk rate though.
I’ve heard mixed reports on his defense. With BA giving him a rather glowing report:
Green does not project to have the same thunder in his bat—compared with Longoria, in particular—but he is similar to Tulowitzki in his defensive skills and playmaking ability. He has excellent range, outstanding hands and the smooth and fluid actions of a possible Gold Glove defender. Green has a fine arm, though not quite the cannon Tulowitzki possesses. He’s faster than either Longoria or Tulowitzki, frequently clocking in the 6.6-second range over 60 yards.
I’m not really sure what to believe about his defense and we’ll have to see how the reports are next season. I think it’s safe to say that he’s a very toolsy SS who had an underwhelming Junior year. A year ago, he was seen as on par with Ackley. I agree that his status took a hit, but I have a hard time dropping him all the way to the C+ range.

C+ for Ethan Martin?
that seems pretty low to me..
120 K in 100 innings has good control vs RHB but cant throw a strike to LHB and that will come with more experiance.. I think hes at least a B-
by matthewmafa on Nov 2, 2009 9:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Way too low
Martin has pretty comparable stuff to Kershaw, while having limited pitching experience on his side.
This guy has a chance to be something special.

Dare ya to put that in your signature.

He actually does, though.
Apparently, his fastball is 93-96, and he has a plus curveball, to boot.

even if that report were accurate (which I'm skeptical of)
It still isn’t as good as Kershaw. Kershaw threw at the same speed and touched higher from the left side, had an even better curve, and showed potential with his change as well.
That being said, I can’t figure out if you guys think he’s good or not.
by mrkupe on Nov 5, 2009 7:40 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
his velocity is that high
i was listening to one of his starts late in the season and in the first inning he hit 97 at least 3 times.. but this was in the first inning and i dont know how it holds up late into games…
and martins curve is no way near kershaws curve..
and kershaw has completely abandonded his changeup.. he doesnt throw one anymore.. instead his 3rd pitch now is this new filthy slider… its already really good..
by matthewmafa on Nov 5, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
B- sounds right
Pretty raw and might profile better as a reliever down the line, but he’s a nice arm.
by mrkupe on Nov 3, 2009 2:43 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I like Ethan Martin...
more than most and I think he has really good potetnial, but I wouldn’t go B- just yet. He needs to have a really good year before his grade increases from me. BTW, I was the guy who would write ETHAN MARTIN!!! on every poll when we did the top propects poll last year. : )
by joegonzo on Nov 3, 2009 7:08 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
his year wasn't terrible all things considered
Despite being raw, his performance in the Midwest League was okay and he showed stuff that was better than his numbers.
I do suspect that you are wrong about one thing, though. If you don’t think Martin is a B- prospect, I don’t think you like him “more than most” people. I think you would find a lot of people who are willing to go B- and it wouldn’t surprise me if somebody went higher than that.

Jesus Montero
Pedro Alvarez
Carlos Santana
Michael Taylor
Kyle Drabek
Grant Green
Aaron Hicks
Logan Morrison
Hector Rondon
Brett Lawrie
Ethan Martin
Todd Frazier
Comments:
-I like Morrison, but being a 1B really hurt his fantasy value.
-Montero and Pedro are the best hitters, but both will come at an offensive position (I’m betting that Pedro ends up at 1B early in his career, while Montero DHs). In fact, you could make an argument for Carlos Santana because of these positional concerns; they’re all very close
-If you could guarantee me that Lawrie doesn’t end up in the OF, he’d rank a lot higher.
by jar75 on Nov 2, 2009 6:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
1st base?
sorry, but Montero is a DH
You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--

So what it comes down to then is...
who has the better bat? Do you really think Montero does?
by joegonzo on Nov 2, 2009 7:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It's close
But I give Montero a slight edge based on his better contact rate and his age advantage. Pedro, currently, has slightly more power, but I don’t think it’s by a very wide margin.

You are crazy...
Can you please explain ranking Morrison above Alvarez. I can understand Montero and Santana.
by joegonzo on Nov 2, 2009 7:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i think they're both 1B [except for pedro's first year]
and i think Morrison’s power has yet to be seen.
by daveh33 on Nov 2, 2009 11:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
and when and IF his power comes...
he is Then in the discussion with alvarez… but for now, its not anywhere to be seen
by matthewmafa on Nov 2, 2009 11:58 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
his wrist was hurt
and last year he played in the fsl.
he ISOP’d .241 in 114 healthy July ABs.
everyone just seems to love Pedro because he finished strong. 2 other power lefty bats like Weglarz and Morrison battled injury and bad-luck BABIPs all year.
here are there AA BABIPs.
Weglarz = .249
LoMo = .304
Pedro = .407
by daveh33 on Nov 3, 2009 3:07 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Ok...
so Alvarez won’t have a .407 BABIP. It will be high though, because of the amount of line drives he hits. Something like .360 which will only bring his average at AA to somewhere in the 340s. He killed the ball if you count luck or not.
by joegonzo on Nov 3, 2009 7:10 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
not denying he didn't have a great year
i like Morrison’s future prospects just a bit better. i think his batting eye is elite, and his power will develop.
pedro has elite power, but i am skeptical. i think he still has weaknesses against LHPs, and he looked terrible in the futures game. i know its one game, but i saw a weakness, one game or not
by daveh33 on Nov 3, 2009 3:45 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If Frazier...
can find a postion at 2B and the Reds move Phillips to SS then Frazier could be much higher here imo.
by Havok1517 on Nov 2, 2009 9:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Frazier
Decent chance he has a 2009 Ben Zobrist type year as his peak (.300/.400/.500+) with accompanying seasons of (.280/.350/.470) which is very valuable from 2B and OF. I just traded for Frazier in my league for Michael Bowden and feel it was a steal for me.
If he’s a top 3 2B he vaults over a few of the names on the list just on positional scarcity (look at Brian Roberts as an example)
by two fishsticks on Nov 2, 2009 10:29 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Are we underratting positional value?
A good amount of the players have great bats, but defensive issues or may have to shift positions. Green seems like a solid bet to remain at SS. Maybe not star upside, but a good, above avg SS potential seems to be there. A “not great” junior season went from a potential top 5 pick and best position player in the draft to sort of falling off the radar. “experts” like callis mentions green still as the next best college bat from that draft after ackley.
by Asfan4ever723 on Nov 3, 2009 11:58 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Been noticing this
I think part of it is just a cyclical issue… it seems like this year that most of the sure fire prospects and high minors guys are corner players while the best up the middle prospects are far away or risky…

Yes. I agree. Its because all we have available is offensive stats on the internet. And fantasy baseball too.

To add a little context to the Grant Green side debate
In a recent chat, Jim Callis was asked if Brett Wallace was the top prospect in the A’s system. His response was,
“Jim Callis(2:58 PM)
I’m tempted to go with Grant Green.”
Just to throw that out there.

Since this thread has Hector Rondon in it.......
Speaking of Hector…
would anybody here in a real-life dynasty league trade:
SP-Francisco Liriano
CF-Carlos Gomez
SP-Benjamin Tootle
SP-Tyler Robertson
Alexi Casilla
Luke Hughes (Alexi and Luke are pretty much throw ins for me)
for
SP- Hector Rondon
C- Josh Donaldson
SP- Jeurys Familia
I’m the franchise giving up all the players for just the 3, but I really like Rondon
but is he worthy of that package…… ? thanks for anybody who answers’ time
Deolis Guerra = Daniel Cabrera ?
I tend to think so

instead of Gomez I could give up Valbuena
but I’m thin in the middle-Infield department…
